Yes, they do survive and grow!

My daughter, Rebekah Mary Catherine, was born almost 20 years ago at 35 weeks. She had no suck reflex, her lungs were not developed and her skin simply hung on her. I was not allowed to touch her or hold her because I was told that she would require more oxygen if I did.
In those days, there was no support for us moms and guilt we felt. There was no rest for me as I wanted to be by her side every single moment. One night, a respiratory therapist stayed beside her all night long.
However, two things were in our favor. She was a screamer! This built the surfactant in her lungs and helped her lungs to mature. And, we had a wonderful night nurse from "down under." Her training in Australia supported the fact that the more the baby was touched and cuddled, the more weight they gained and the healthier they were.
She worked the midnight shift. I would sneak down to the nursery and she would let me rock my baby. Heaven!
Today, the support systems are wonderful, the technology incredible, and the hope unquenchable. Bekah is lively and beautiful, truly a gift from God.
Don't give up. Believe in the miracle you have been given.
Blessings,

Desiree Marrion

For Desiree

Twenty years ago must have been more frightening for you, but one thing remains the same. MIRACLES! Bekah knew how important her life was here, and she hung on and defeated all the odds. Preemies have a special purpose, one of which is to make their parents lives richer and filled with much love. Your story offers one of hope, faith and strength. Thank you! All the best to you and Bekah!
