Vomit or spit up?katek - 04:40pm Sep 4, 2007 ESTAs a first time mother, I'm having a hard time gaging whether to categorize my son's output as spit up or vomit. In addition to small dribbles coming out of his mouth during feeds, he regurgitates about five mouthfuls of milk back out (some with projectile force) per day. Two weeks ago, he was diagnosed as having a milk allergy. Last week, he was diagnosed as having a soy allergy. I am giving him breast milk fortified with Neocate, because he has to have the extra calories. He was born 1 lbs 4 oz (25 weeks) and now weights 5 lbs 15 ozs at 3 weeks age corrected. Although he spits up a lot and would appear to vomit at least twice a day, this hasn't deterred his eating. Every time something comes up, he immediately wants some more milk to replace it. And he is consistently gaining weight (about 6 ozs per week). Should I be worried about the mouthfuls of milk coming back up? He is already on reglan and ranitidine. He sleeps in a Danny sling when he goes to bed. And we hold him upright as much as possible. Thanks.

It sounds more like vomiting or reflux than "just" spit-up. But, that said - sounds like you're already doing everything you could for it anyway! Sounds like the doctors are on top of the meds and keeping him upright (especially after feeds) and in a sling to sleep is really the only oher thing you can do.
One of my triplets had HORRIBLE, projectile, absolutely vile reflux. I mean every time you fed him - look out because half of it was coming back up - all over the couch, Mommy, or whatever else was in the way. But, like your son, he was gaining weight, staying healthy, and still eating well. So our doctor basically had us "wait it out" and it eventually got better - now it is "just" a memory. If he stops eating well or gaining weight - I would become more concerned and maybe follow up with a GI doctor - but otherwise, I think "wait and see" is about all you can do.
Hang in there! It should get easier.
Take care,
Kara

Thanks, Kara
Thanks, Kara.
We talked with the pediatrician. He consulted with the GI doctor, and they have suggested that we give Prevacid a try (replacing Ranitidine). Prevacid is supposed to be stronger.
One advantage of Prevacid is that it is only given once a day. But the disadvantage is that it is a larger amount. The Ranitidine was 0.7 mls twice a day. The Prevacid solution is 5 mls. Tried giving it to my son last night, and he spit a good part of it out.
I'm sorry that you little one had reflux too. But it is comforting to know that someone has had the same problem and is doing well now! Gives us something to look forward to!

Re: Thanks, Kara
We never tried Ranitidine - but the boys were on Prevacid for a while, then Priolosec. Darn it - I can't remember what the first one was before we went to Prevacid... it all runs together now! Yes, hang in there. I thought there was NO WAY Isaac would stop vomiting - and now it is "just" a memory! Take care,
Kara

Prevacid
Any suggestions for getting Prevacid down easily? After I dissolve the tablet in 10 mls of water, I use the syringe to get 5 mls and then try to get Henry to take it. Even when we do little bits at a time, it seems like he dribbles a good deal of it out of his mouth! At least he likes the taste of the Reglan.
Best,
Kate

Thanks for the advice.
Your son is adorable.
Thanks for the advice. We'll try your method tonight.
By the way, my son's doctor said that we could dissolve the Prevacid tablet in the water. Use half, and then keep the other half for the next day. However, the directions say that you are supposed to use it within 15 minutes. For those of you who have little ones on Prevacid, do you keep the remaining amount for the next day, or do you dump it?

you can dump
you can tri giving it to him in the morning instead of the night
and what you should do is get a pill cutter and do half the pill one day then the other half the next.
thats what we do.

my son gage went through all the same things your discribing. he projectile vomited all the time all over EVERYTHING. i thought there was no end in site when we went threw all the different reflux medicines. when he first came home from the hospital we were mixing it in his formula then we moved on to just the medicine. we gave him a liquid we didn't use any pill form. but they can flavor the liquid medicine it was a struggle with gage to get him to take any medicine. but eventually he stopped vomiting on everything. only after they took him off the reflux medicine. weird? turns out it was upsetting his stomach. i guess my point is just wait it out. it gets better. good luck

Off Reglan
I can certainly relate to the problems with the reflux medications. About a week and a half ago (Friday, Sept 14), we took my son to my parents' house. We ended up staying longer than we had intended, and consequently missed giving him his Reglan dose. For the first time in weeks, he was able to sleep. I'd told the doctor that Henry wasn't sleeping, but I think that he wrote me off as an overanxious first time mother. When I say he wasn't sleeping, I'm mean that he would take a couple 10-20 minute cat naps throughout the day and night, but he probably wasn't sleeping more than 2-3 hours total per day.
Once off the Reglan, he started sleeping for 1-2 hours straight. And, it is a good, deep sleep. He still doesn't sleep much in comparison to other babies, but his sleep is so much better than it was when he was on the Reglan. And, his vomiting has decreased. It hasn't been eliminated, but we are approaching the realm of normal baby spit up as opposed to vomiting. We aren't there yet, but some "normalcy" is in sight.
We're still doing the Prevacid for now.
