I can tell you that Prayer changes things and has the answers and the help that we need..I know you need to take it easy and I personally would push for the cerclage considering the history...As far as your fiance not having a job...It may be a good time to do some searching..B/c u will be down and in the bed at some point I am sure...Good luck

I made it to 34 weeks and still growing without complications... although it get uncomfortable I am so thnakful for this cerclage... Have faith and everything will be alright... Of course everyone is different but I believe you will be okay... Ever since the cerclage I have been working full time up until 32 weeks I am still working but part time only cause I want to avoid contractions... SO far this whole pregnancy I haven't been put on bed rest... So don't worry SO much... you will get work in and baby will be okay... I believe everything will be fine... GOOD lucK...

After several unexplained losses, I'm pregnant at 35 weeks. I had to have a cerclage at week 17 and the doctor is amazed at how well things are going. I was nervous too prior to the cerclage, because my need for a cerclage was on an emergency basis...and I didn't have time to think! But all in all, it went well...unfortunately, I had to have general anestesia, so I cannot describe the pain or lack of pain to you. However, I did not experience any pain afterwards. <--Good thing! I am waiting for the removal in the next two weeks...so, we'll see from there. I wish you lots of luck!

The NERVOUS MOTHER TO BE

I just ahd some questions about the stitch they were suppose to stitch my cervix with my 3rd child I had in on dec26 2007 he was born at 24 weeks. I went on bedrest in the hospital at 22 weeks I was getting the progestrone shot but I guess it didnt work. Now my son is almost 3 months still in the NICU he is going to make it they said he will never be able to come home. We plan to try again and they plan to stitch my cervix I just wanted to know what do they have to do do they have to put you to sleep? Is it painful? What are the chances of you delivering early I just hope when we do try again I can make it to at leat 30 something weeks. What if the stitch rips do they go in again and put another one in? Do you have to stay in the hospital after you get the stitch? Can you still have sexual intercourse after they put the stitch in? How would you know if the stitch ripped or can you tell?

Re: NEED ANSWERS

I'm sorry you have had a rough time and I know you are still healing. I have a cerclage in currently and have made it to 36 weeks. I believe that along with bedrest and progesterone shots this is why I am still pregnant.

Generally, you will have a spinal and they place a purse-string stitch up and around your cervix. They like to place them as high and close to your uterus as possible. From what I have read the most common technique is the McDonald cerclage. Sometimes they put in 1 or 2 stitches. I have 2 stitches. They also like to put them in early - approx 13 to 14 weeks before your cervix begins to shorten or open. They usually ask you to rest for a few days to week and then go back to your normal routine. Depending on your lifestyle, cervix, and OB you may need bedrest. They will usually follow you with vaginal U/S to keep checking your cervix.

Overall, the procedure wasn't too bad. I cramped and spotted a little bit the first week. I hope this helps. Generally, when done early in your pregnancy they are 85% to 90% effective at helping prevent pre term delivery. Of course you have to weigh all of this for yourself. You might want to consult a perinatalogist as well.

Good luck

Circlage vs Progesteron shots??

This is my first post here and I'm hoping I can get some input or advice from anyone who's had a circlage or progesteron shots. (pardom my long post, however I feel the more information I provide the better others can comment) I'm 37 years old, currently 12wks 3 days pregnant with my third pregnancy. The first pregnancy ended at 8 weeks, I was 34, the second I was 36 and miscarried at 16 weeks (April 2008). The first miscarriage didn't alarm me as I realize 1st trimester miscarriages are somewhat common. The miscarriage at 16 weeks is what concerns me. To this day no one can tell me exactly what happened. My ob told me I "might" have an incompetent cervix, then after an autopsy was preformed on the fetus it was determined that there was a slight infection present and I was told the infection was the reason for the miscarriage. Not having complete confidence in my first ob I changed doctors to a perinatologist, who still is not certain I have an IC. He's also not certain I miscarried due to an infection. When he read the medical reports he indicated the type of infection that apparently caused the miscarriage could have been something the fetus contracted after I'd dilated and went into labor. My first ob was somewhat lax when learning of my cramping at 15 weeks. When I called to let her know I was having severe cramping at she sent me to an ultrasound tech the next day who preformed a routine tummy ultrasound, not a transvaginal to see if I was funnelling or my cervix was softening, just a regular uc. I continued to cramp and was told by my ob unless I had severe bleeding I should be fine. Four days later, and after plenty of cramping, I finally ended up in the emergency room knowing something was wrong. The doctor did a vaginal exam and found I was dialated and the membranes were completely bulging beyond the point of doing an emergency circlage. The following day I delivered a baby boy who was far to premature to live.
My new perinatologist has suggested I have a circlage put in at 13-14 weeks to prevent pre-term delivery. However my concern is that no one has asked me anything about P17 shots or even checked my estrogen/progesteron levels? My first ob doesn't think I have an IC (my cervix is measuring 3.2), I also have a friend on the East Coast who is an ob and she doesn't seem to think I have an IC either? I've been doing a lot of research and just learned about the relation between ovarian cysts and PCOS. While I haven't had a problem getting pregnant and I'm not obese, I definatley have some of the other symptoms of this condition. Last year I was briefly hospitalized for a ruptured ovarian cyst and it just occured to me I might have an imbalance in my hormone level which could have caused my miscarriages. I have an appointment this Friday and am hoping I can get some more information on who is a candidate for a circlage and who is a candidate for P17 shots. Additionally why hasn't my new perinatologist discussed the possiblity of getting these shots? I've read many posts on women who have had one or both. Do I need to miscarry again before a doctor checks my hormone level? What symptoms have other women had in order for their doctors to prescribe P17 shots, two and three miscarriages? I called my doctors office today to see if hormone levels are checked in regular blood or urine test, they are not. I'm certainly not opposed to having a circlage but if there's an issue with my pregesteron level than will the circlage by itself help? I'm confused and want to do whatever is best for my pregnancy but would also like to minimize any unnecessary surgery/treatment. Any suggestions, similar stories, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi, I have both a cerclage and 17P shots

I had preterm labor with my first at 29 weeks but with drugs and bedrest went to 38 weeks. My 2nd preg was twins and I had PTL at 20 weeks, hospital at 24 and delivered at 27 weeks. One of my twins passed away after 8 days and Jacob is a healthy 3yo. I am now 20 weeks preg and although I wouldn't say my cervix is incompentent, it opens because I contract early, my peri suggested the cerclage to prevent dialation and the shots to help hold off the contractions. I'm 20 weeks and am not on bedrest but honestly don't know for how much longer. I will have cervical length checks every 2 weeks to see how it's holding up.

I would ask your peri about the shots, I've really learned with this pregnancy to take control of my care. My ob didn't suggest a consult with the peri until my 20 week u/s but I did it at 14.5 weeks and was in the OR the next day with a preventative cerclage. Definitely talk to your doctor.

Good Luck and join us on the pregnant and fabulous thread.

Kelly

www.I-am-pregnant.com

I'm on there as pricelessjojo

Check that site out, very helpful, I'm on there myself. Anyway, get a second opinion, as human being who r professionals they never want to accept that they can be wrong at times. If ur cervix is short, get the cerclage, I too was afraid when I heard I needed a cerclage at 18wks. My high risk doc wrote out on paper cervical length check, vaginially every week. My cerclage was supposed to be done at 15wks but I didn't need it then till I hit 18wks, the U/S tech page my wonderful doc Dr. Nazir and it was done the next day and 1wk later he prescribed the 17p shot. Its God doing cuz he saw what my hubby and I went through when we lost our 1st pregnancy due to I/C last year, and what made it worst, she was born on my b-day. My last cerclage check-up I was 24wks pregnant, my doc didn't recommend anymore check-ups afterwards.

As of Dec 4th we're 33wks and 4daz pregnant, the cerclage and 17p is doing it's job till now. My last 17p shots will be Dec 19th I'd be 35wks pregnant then. Thank God!

19 weeks and on bedrest

Hi all
I am 19 weeks pregnant with my second child and have just been put on bedrest by my Dr. for a shortening or thinning cervix. I am really scared of losing this baby It is our last chance to have another child I have already had 3 early miscarrages. I have another appointment next week to check the lengh of my cervix, they may do a cerclage if it is altered. I guess this procedure is quite successful. I even get nervouse each time I have to get up to go to the bathroom.

Actually, the procedure is fairly simple. Besides the stick for anesthesia, their is no pain. It doesn't take very long, you'll be resting for a bit, then it's done.

    Best of luck to you.

Re: my daughter is is 18 and prenat with twins

Welcome to Share, congratulations on your upcoming grandbabies.

I am sure this was a scary thing to hear. Typically, a cerclage, coupled with bedrest of some sort, is pretty effective. The cerclage itself will help the cervix from funneling - but it is important that your daughter does everything she can, too by taking it easy, whatever her doctor is recommending.

Hang in there. Please keep us posted.

    Take care,
    Kara

Re: my daughter is is 18 and prenat with twins

Hi there, I'm sure you are quite worried. I know my mom has worried each and every time I've been pregnant.

As was said before, cerclages can be quite effective. Funneling can still happen with a cerclage, but it doesn't mean that the pregnancy can't continue. I've had 2 (and on my 3rd cerclage) with 2 full term babies and I'm hoping to have one more. I've had funneling to the cerclage at one point or another with both pregnancies and my cerclage held just like it should.
Cerclages do have risks which I'm sure you know...if your daughter experiences bleeding or contractions she should contact her doctor immediately.
Bedrest can be long and boring, but I feel it can help ease the mind if nothing else. Taking it easy and not lifting is very important with a cerclage.
Keep us posted and good luck!
    Kristyn
