The Premature Perspective
PremiePatti - 06:58pm Mar 26, 2008 EST
Patricia Goral
My name is Patricia . I am a 21 year old college student at Michigan State University. I am a premature survivor...
Due: November 14th 1986
Born: August 19, 1986
Weight: ~2lbs
I stayed in the hospital until December. I experienced a brain bleed. My lungs were not fully developed. In fact, my parents had a priest come to the hospital ready to read me my last rites. Through their accounts my parents explained their experience as a day to day roller coaster ride. They would come to the hospital to sit and wait to hear from the doctor. As they said, "Some days were good and some were bad." My father accounts his experience while I was in the NICU as follows, " I would sit in the waiting room. There would be parents everywhere and every time the doctor stepped out you could see everyone jump a little. The doctor would come out and tell one family that it didn't look good, or that their child would experience life-long developmental problems. Some days you were better and some days you were worse. My heart would break every time I watched the doctor deliver bad news as I sat waiting for an update. It was a roller coaster but eventually you got better and better and stronger. And now look at you!" I am so utterly grateful for the love of my parents, the work of every doctor and every nurse, and of course March of Dimes.
Today:
I am now healthy and happy. I am a volunteer for the Lansing March of Dimes. The only remnants of my fight for life is a small scar on my right side from the apparatus that allowed my under developed lungs to breathe in those first few months. I will forever be thankful for the work, research, and contributions of all people involved with the March of Dimes. My precious life was saved and we have come so far since then. I will always fight to give every baby their 9 months and to save those just like me.
