Progesterone Suppositories

Lina Young - 10:35am May 2, 2008 EST
Mommy to Ethan - 25 w 6 days (now 3 1/2) and expecting baby #2 in October 2008

I am in my 15th week of pregnancy and I had a cerclage placed at 14 weeks. I will start progesterone in my 16th week. It has been suggested that I use suppositories because it is better for incompetant cervix. Has anybody used suppositories? I was just wondering what the experience was like and how it works. I have not picked up the prescription yet, so I'm not sure how it actually works. Also, were there any side effects?

Mom to Kimberly (25 wkr, now 4 yrs!) & Matthew (38.5 wkr, now 2 yrs!)

I had a cerclage and 17P shots - no one ever mentioned suppositories to me.

I do know a lot of women with true IC (They weren't positive I had it, just some hints towards it) who were told not to do ANYTHING to disturb their cervix during pregnancy. I would wonder if the suppositories could possibly be distruptive to the cervix when you are inserting them. Might at least be worth asking about.

By the way, my son was born at 38.5 weeks, so I think everything they did for me worked!

Thanks Jackie. I was wondering about that myself, but I had both my OB and the surgeon say that those were better for me, so I'm hoping that is true. My doctor has not checked cervical length so as not to disturb the area, but he did tell me not to use the suppositories until this week. I go back to him next week, so I'll ask him then if this is ok for the cervix. Thanks for the advice. I'm guessing not too many women are given these because I have not been able to find a lot of information about it except that it was supposed to be better for IC. Who knows??

I'll jump in on this one

I was so lucky to use the blessed "ice cubes" during my pregnancy with my kiddos. They just take some getting used too- but I truly think they helped...if there was a day I missed one for whatever reason, I tended to have contractions, etc. The only side effect was that they umm "melt" so to speak a little- so you might want to wear a light pad every day too. Sorry if tmi, just keeping it real!

Best of luck!

Progesterone

Hi Lina,

I had a cerclage placed at 13 weeks with my second pregnancy and did the 17P shots starting at 16 weeks. I also had to do the progesterone suppositories from 5 weeks to 10 weeks, but that was because my progesterone levels low early in my pregnancy. I did not even know that the suppositories were an option for the purpose of preventing pre-term labor. Anyways...I didn't think either way was too unpleasant. The shots were quick and clean and you only do it once a week, but a little painful (mine always left a bruise) whereas the suppositories are painless, but kind of gross and they leak afterwards and you have to lay down for 30 minutes afterwards and you have to do them twice a day. I guess I would probably go with whatever your doctor recommends, but I just thought I would give you take on the two options. Good luck!

Roxanne
