Our Shining Star - Colleen
DNASMOM - 07:53pm Sep 6, 2008 EST
Mom to a feeder and grower born June 2004 almost 33 wks 2lb 13 oz.
I am pleased to announce our newest Shining Star Colleen (GradyGabbyAbby), author of her blog, A journal for Grady, Gabby & Abby
Colleen first became involved with the March of Dimes by donating money while pregnant with her first daughter Gabrielle in 2005. She never would’ve guessed at the time that she would become a future advocate. Sadly, her daughter Gabby did not survive her premature birth. Colleen came to Share seeking support and has now been a treasured member since December 2005. Our community rallied around her once again as prematurity also claimed the life of her second daughter Abigail in August 2006. Colleen herself now reaches out to other Share members with warmth, support and encouragement.
In addition to her volunteer work here at Share, Colleen also looks for every opportunity for fundraising. She often sells MoD beanie babies and has profited $100 just by placing them in local businesses around town. For the past two years she has held an Ice Cream sale during her town’s Summerfest. This year she raised over $200!
Earlier this year she had dreams of doing a much larger fundraiser. She and her husband Ken own a tattoo parlor and planned to incorporate Ken’s art into their fundraising. In March of this year they decided to get other artists involved and announced their plans for “Tattooing to Save Babies” day. She immediately sent out emails and put up a website at Black Anchor Tattoo to start receiving donations. The big day took place on August 2. A few of our very own Share members even flew in to participate and get inked by the artist himself, Krooked Ken Motter! The event was a huge success and to date has brought in more than $10,000!!! Congratulations Colleen! You are indeed a Shining Star!
In appreciation of her hard work and dedication to the mission, Colleen will be receiving a specially engraved “Share Your Story” watch courtesy of HourPower watches.
