Hello and welcome to Share! Congrats on the birth and homecoming of your baby girl. I had a 29 weeker and was basically told the same thing. It sounds frightening but when you think about the potential risk for RSV and hospitalization that usually comes with it staying in is really worth it. We didn't go any where like the malls, or stores but after a certain period we did take our little girl to my mom's house and my sister's, that was basically it. Every parent and preemie is different but I really felt that this isolation coupled with the Synagis shot helped keep my daughter healthy. Keep in mind that this is just temporary and eventually when the cold season passes you will be out and about in no time.
Take care and good luck,
Donnavie

Hi and Welcome to Share...I have to agree with Donnavie, we didn't and still don't take my son anywhere during RSV season. The possible risks that can come from RSV far outweigh all the drawbacks of isolation. For me I planned stuff for to do when my husband got home, or on the weekends.
RSV is very horrible stuff...it can be hard on a full term baby let alone a preemie.
We'll be here for you, I know how hard isolation can be...

Lorne (23 wk), Isaac (26 wk) and Sullivan (26 wk) - my four-year miracles!! |
|
|
We did the same as Kate and Donnavie. The first year (the boys were *just* home from the NICU) we didn't go anywhere at all besides the doctor and we didn't allow visitors besides the boys' grandparents and only if they were healthy. The second winter we did a little more - we went to friends and families houses (after checking if anyone was sick!) but still no where public. Like Donnavi said, every child is different and one of my boys was still very, very sick and on oxgen for two years. Even WITH the precautions we took, he was hospitalized 12 times in those first 18 months so we did what we had to do. Hang in there. We're all here for you on-line! Take care,
Kara

Welcome to Share and Congrats on the birth of your daughter!
I have to agree with everyone else. We did the same thing with all 3 of our girls. We didnt take them out at all during cold season, and with all but my youngest we did venture out to the homes of close friends and family, but only after making sure everyone was well!
We still have to keep my youngest daughter at home around this time of the year and it does make us stir crazy at times, but going stir crazy is so much better than risking her being in the hospital!
we are all here for you!

Mom to an angel (22 weeker) and a miracle (27 weeker now 4-years-old). |
|
|
We were blessed to have a pretty healthy 27 weeker. That said, Lily came home right at the beginning of RSV/flu season. We, too, kept her in pretty much all winter. Hubby and I took turns doing grocery shopping or other errands, so that we both got out of the house. Lily went to the doctors office and that was about it. No malls, no grocery stores, no church. We got the okay from her ped to take her to our parents' houses for Thanksgiving and Christmas....as long as we stuck to immediate family only and made sure everyone was healthy, used hand sanitizer before touching her, etc. It was worth all the precautions. Lily stayed healthy all winter.
I know staying in all winter sounds like a VERY long time. But it will be Spring before you know it. And your child's health is very worth the trouble right now. Trust me, this phase won't last forever.

Mom who never went home with a baby; they all had to be different! |

I know it is hard not being able to take your lil' one out and about. RSV to an older child is tough. On a former preemie you are talking PICU admission and many times, intubation. It is such a serious thing. Rule of thumb: screen anyone who comes into your home, good hand washing, and mostly trips to private homes for a while. As your lil' one gets older they get stronger, they can venture out further. There really is light at the end of the tunnel!

My daughter was a 24 weeker -- she came home right at the beginning of spring so most of the "junk" was past. I kept her inside as much as possible, just as the Doctors recommended. She ended up getting RSV the day before her 1st birthday, which incidentally is in January -- the height of RSV season! So........long story short, it's SO worth it to keep them inside as much as possible (who knows if she would have gotten it sooner had I been out galavantin' around) but there's still going to be a risk, even as they get older. As she has grown (she's 6 now) she's had lots of issues with her upper respiratory. More ear infections and "cold-type" illnesses than I can count! But at least she's with us -- that's all that matters!

I know you are freaked about the feeling of isolation. I actually found Share during Nia's first RSV season. It helped to not feel so alone. One time I ran out of formula, and since my hubby is a pilot I couldn't wait for him to get it, well looking back now I probably looked like a freak. I had her in a front carrier on my chest with a blanket draped from my shoulders down to my waist. I literally ran through the store straight to the formula and back out the door. Let me tell you, I would have rather stayed home and been bored rather than the stress that moment put on me. Hang in there.

Two out of Three of my children got the RSV vaccine Synagis. Marina my oldest got it for 2 seasons, Olivia my youngest got it for 1 season.
Neither of them ever got sick from the monthly vaccine. I really feel like it helped them to stay a little bit healthier.
Talk to your peditrician about it if you are uncomfortable and I am sure that they can help put all of your fears at ease. You can also go to Synagis.com and you can read all about the vaccine, and read stories of other families.

My son Kyle got the RSV vaccine for 3 years, it was a good thing for him and it was very needed for him.
Last winter he did not qualify for it and ended up in the hospital with RSV...it was very scary!
Good luck with everything, keep us posted!

RSV shot?: Did any of your children receive the RSV shot? If so, did your children still get sick?
Re: RSV shot?
My son received the Synagis RSV shot for 3 seasons. He got a mild case of RSV when he was 2 but that was it. They can still get RSV with it, but usually it helps lessen the severity of it! If your insurance is willing to pay I say GET IT! No questions asked! Believe me, at 3 my son HATED going in every month for the shots, but it was worth it to me!
Hugs

Welcome to Share. I'm in the same boat you are. My son was a 27 weeker and made it through the NICU mostly healthy without much trouble. When we came home we had some weight gain issues so he's still on the small side, just 10 lbs at 4 months. We're facing the issue of being locked up all winter too. But one good cold let alone RSV can wipe out 10 pounds pretty quick. So, no taking chances. I like that there's a website like this that you can stay connected to people that are going through it with you. Stay online and it will be spring before you know it. We do go to family members as long as no one's been sick. But not stores or anything like that.
Take care and congrats on bringing your little girl home!

My son was born at 23w 6d. He received Synagis his first winter home and the only "outings" we really did were trips through the drive thru for coffee. My husband would watch him for a few hours on the weekend so I could do the grocery shopping and we were very lucky that I got a year paid leave from work so we didn't have to worry about day care. It was a hard and lonely winter, especially when I had numerous people telling me I was too protective, but for us it was worth it! My advice would be to gather as much information as you can and then do what is right for you and your family. Good luck and take care!

Re: looking for advice
My story is just like Nderk's story except my son was born 24w 6d. We take turns going to the grocery store. My family was very understanding about not getting my son out, but I felt we had to keep convincing some of the people in my husbands family that he was in danger of going back into the hospital. We were told we were being over protective. We missed Thanksgiving and going to miss Christmas, I feel bad about that. At first they weren't happy about it but I think they understand now. I do feel like a caged rat but it's worth it so my son is safe. He was in the hospital for 3 1/2 months with a ventilator down his throat with IV's all over him. I don't want to go through that again. After a month of fighting with my son's pediatrician we finally got his RSV shot yesterday. We doing what's right for our son and if anyone complains they can shove it.

I think you're doing what's best for your baby and your family and when others can't understand that, it's their problem!! After spending the first few months of their life in the hospital, they don't deserve to go back so soon!! Tracy

I know you posted this a few months ago, but my baby was born at 34 weeks and I had him ina restaurant two weeks after he was born. You know what I did? I kept a light blanket over his car seat so it created a canopy and did not allow stranger to get near my baby. I also carried him in a baby carrier everywhere I went so his head faced me. We have never had any issues, but we were just careful not to allow people to get too close to him. I hope you are getting out of the house now.

RSV
Yes, you want to protect her from RSV but sometimes being over protective will still get them sick. My daughter was born at 27wks and very high for RSV for her size. My daughter went into the hospital because she was having some issue with her Gtube and she got RSV. Your not safe anywhere, but you can protect her and yourself. iI carried hand sanitizer and did not let anyone touch or see my daughter. The only people that handled her was my husband and myself. Her first birthday was a sad but wonderful day, there were three people at her birthday party. Her, my husband and myself because her birthday is on Dec 11. We would try to go out but because she had the oxygen, the feeding pump and other equiptment that would hold us down. Dont be afraid to head out just make sure people wash and sanitize their hands. Sniffles and coughing and sneezing STAY AWAY!!. I took my daughter to a well baby check up and there was a parent and daughter on the sick side where she was coughing and I asked him to take her over to the sick area and kept Ericka( my daughter) at my side and covered. My daughter has gotten RSV twice while in the hospital and once outside of hospital and the reasoning for the one outside is because she was going to school where three other students got it too. Warm thoughts and wishes for you and your family
