My daughter also needed a second round of medication to close her PDA.

I hope that all is well!

yes

in the beginning they gave him one round and they thought it closed. Either it did close and popped back open or they missed it. We got the second round right before the 2 week cut off. And it did work.

second round

The second round made it smaller.....so they are watching it. As long as he has no symptoms...they can watch it for up to a year. I guess it can take up to a year to close? We are still praying that is closes!

PDA's can take up to a year to close. So your son may have a murmur that comes and goes as a result. A PDA can be open and not cause a problem. IT all depends on the size to the opening.

I hope that all is well!

Mom to an angel (22 weeker) and a miracle (27 weeker now 4-years-old).

I could be wrong about this, but I think it took 3 rounds for our daughter's PDA to close. She was born at 27w 4d.

Did anyone have to do surgery?

Surgery?: Did anyone have to do surgery?

    Re: Surgery?

Our son had surgery. He was a 26 weeker, and it was about a week into the NICU. Sue to the other medication he was on, he needed surgery instead of another med which would conflict with current ones.

It was probably his simplest procedure in the NICU, and his scar looks great. He is 5 now.

    Re: Surgery?

My son, Lorne, had surgery at about one month old (he was born at 23 weeks, 3 days, so he was about 27 weeks "adjusted.") They didn't even attempt the medication with him because the situation seemed very immediate.

He did great - his sats, his HR, his BP - everything leveled out literally almost immediately after his PDA ligation. The surgery itself was very "easy" (even on my 2 lb 23 weeker!) and was very fast. We didn't even tell our families to come up to the hospital (we told them he would have the surgery - but encouraged them that they needn't come up to the waiting room, we told them we would let them know when it was over).

ANY surgery - let alone something like "heart surgery" - is a big deal when it is YOUR child. But the surgery really wasn't "that big of a deal".

    Take care, hang in there.

we did two rounds for my little daughter...it didn't close but we got her stable enough to come home and she had surgery on it when she was 19 months old. It was sooo much easier than we thought it would be!

So hold on its a rough road!

    PDA

His PDA closed all by it self! He has been home since November and we went to see cardiologist last week and the repeat echo shows NO PDA!!!!

    Re: PDA

That is such great news! I am glad to hear the PDA closed on it's own and you've been enjoying him at home for months now.
