My 22 week baby in Nicu

jrubio_002 - 01:03pm Nov 9, 2008 EST

Hi, my name is Johanna and I recently had my second son at 22 weeks. I was soo scared i was hoping he stayed in me a little longer but he was able to hold 1 more week. A cerclage was intended at 21 weeks but I was already 10 cm dialated all I could do was bed rest at the hospital. It was horrifying and depressing. He was born exaclty at 22 weeks. I was so scared I did not know what to do? Today my baby is 24 weeks and doing great I have had lot's of family support and lot's of prayers for my little fighter. He had to get a pda surgery last week and thankfully everything went great. It is not easy. It is a rollercoaster but also a blessing to see my little one fighting for his life. I also have another son who is 8 months and has helped my days go faster. I can't wait to have my little angel at home. It is the hardest and most depressing time I have been living... I try to hang in there but it is not easy I am very scared... Please help me with any advice or stories it will help me a lot

Re: 21 weeks

Hello there,

I am so sorry for your loss and I share your frustration about the hospital's decision making and lack of resources. My first baby was born at 22 weeks and 4 days only 3 days always from 23 weeks but, still the hospital was unwilling to rescitiate before 23 weeks as is their policy. He was not in distress even when he feet were engaged and his heart rate and everything was fine, my water didn't even break. We had to watch him struggle and say our good-bye to him, I wish they at least tried. It would be different if he was in distress or if he was he was still born but, to let the little guy struggle in vain for 2 hours was just cruel.

hello everyone I too share some of you all's frustration with the hospital policy of 22 weeks. I lost Tori at 22 wks and DJ came early at 24 weeks and 4 days and he is now in the NICU and we are taking it day by day. It has been such an emotional roller coaster since he was born on Feb 9th and it seems as if everyday there's something new good or bad. Today he had surgery for his PDA which went well, and now they are watching him closely for hydrocephalus, in addition the grade 3 and grade 4 brain bleeds he has. We have faith and now that God will see us through.
