I am so sorry you have to deal with that!!! I dug around a little bit, and found this page that you should go to. I'm sure it will help you with whatever questions you have. http://www.llli.org/FAQ/thrush.html
It's on the La Leache League website, they know everything about breastfeeding!!! Hope this helps! Kelly

Ugh - I had a horrible yeast infection. It was SO uncomfortable and painful. Hang in there - hopefully the doctor will be able to help. The medication the doctor gave me helped.

Take care,
Kara

Med?

What did they treat you with and for how long? I was treated with diflucan for 3 days and got better...then worse again. Now they are using antibiotics and I am worse??

I had thrush (yeast of the breast) with my daughter. It was horrible and Very Hard to get rid of. Diflucan usually works well but maybe the dose is not strong enough. Also there are certain things that you need to do in order to prevent it from coming back. This is what I was told to do:

Wash all my bras, sheets, and whatever I wore with HOT water. This kills the yeast. If you are pumping make sure you wash the parts or bottles the same way. Let your nipples air dry after feeding/pumping and change nursing pads frequently. After nursing/pumping do a half and half solution of vinegar to water and pour it on your nipples. This acidity in the vinegar will kill the yeast. Also, eliminate sugar from your diet if you can because yeast feeds on sugar. If I'm not mistaken, I think antibiotics make the yeast worse. I would ask your dr.

I hope things get better and clear up soon.

    milk tested

I had my breast milk tested at dr's office and it is a bacterial infection. I really thought it was yeast. I am finally on the right medication.

I don't know if you have seen your OB yet but if you have a baby in the NICU and are breast feeding or pumping you need to see an OB and tell the neonatologist and lactation expert/nurse as soon as you can.

I had chronic mastitis while I pumped for 14 months. While I had mastitis I had to pump and dump and the NICU would use my frozen stored milk. I finally ended up with a systemic yeast infection: vaginal yeast infection, yeast mastitis, and a yeast infection in my hands (I was crazy obsessive washing my hands constantly because I was terrified of infecting Ricky). I while I was still sick I wasn't allowed to touch Ricky in the NICU without surgical gloves on and a mask. Needless to say I had to pump and dump during that time as well because yeast infections are particularly hard on preemies in the NICU.

So long story short... tell the doctors. If you have a baby in the NICU tell the neonatologist and if you are also breast feeding and it is in your breasts also tell the OB and the lactation expert/nurse a.s.a.p.

    good luck,

Yikes sorry for my post! I didn't read the follow up where you saw your doctor and was diagnosed.

Take care and please disregard my long winded post!

    Sincerely,

    Meds and breast milk

    p.s
I told the Neonatologist and they were not concerned about the milk I was pumping. Even if it was yeast...they said that it was not going to hurt him. They said they rarely hold breast milk from a preemie. Pretty much only in cases of HIV and some forms of hepatitis. I was really surprised that they are good with the milk. They would have even had me put him to the breast and just treat him with oral meds. I was on cipro to clear up the bacterial infection and they told me it was ok to give it to him. The kind of bacteria I had were found in the stomach anyway, so they were not concerned. He did great. My primary care doctor was surprised that they still let me give him breastmilk while on cipro. Neonatology Nurse practitioner said it was ok.
