Re: Just got a cerclage: Hi Monique: I was wondering how strict the bedrest was for each of you cerclage...
Re: Just got a cerclage
I think it kind of depends on each situation. When I had a cerclauge I was placed on strict bedrest for the duration of my pregnancy. But I was also pregnant with triplets.
Your best bet would be to talk with your doctor ahead of time, I'm sure they could give you some helpful insight as to how things will go. They could always change, but at least you'll have a plan. Good luck!

After my cerclage I spotted for about a week. Then things tapered off until a week later when I had some dark brown discharge. My OB said it was just old blood from the cerclage that made it way out finally.
A cerclage will irritate your cervix a bit and cause you to have extra discharge. I remember mine being a little yellowish, but nothing quite that "mustardy". It's possible it could indicate some sort of infection so I would call your OB just for peace of mind. While extra discharge is normal, my OB was always very concerned about the color. It may be nothing, but you;ll feel better if you call and ask. The doctor won't care. As my OB put it, they'd rather get a ton of phone calls about nothing serious than have to deal with something that they could have reacted to earlier if they only knew about it.
Good Luck,
Jackie

I agree with Jackie that I would call your OB, it will put your mind at ease and they can also answer the questions about the particular health of your babies. As you can see from Jackie and my headers that our children were born well before 33 weeks and are now ok but every child and birth is different so you should ask your doctor about the risks at your current gestation and condition with twins as well as your cerclage questions.
Good luck,
Ellen

Srsri,
Congrats on your pregnancy! I'm glad your body is holding up well right now and I hope it continues for you...
I have had 2 and am on my 3rd cerclage (with full term babies with the first two an dhoping for a 3rd one). I received all my cerclages 14 weeks or before in pregnancy. I am a little unsure why your doctor would have you wait until 19 weeks, but I've never been in your shoes with triplets, so maybe there is a good reason. My understand from my OB and from this site is ideally preventative cerclages are done between 14 and 16 weeks and sometimes as early as 12 weeks.
I was on bedrest with my first cerclage for 6 months because I was funneling/dilated when I got it and I was only 14 weeks. In my second pregnancy with a cerclage I did not go on bedrest, but I did have limitations on lifting and mobility. Meaning nothing over 15 lbs and I had to sit and rest often. This time, I am on 15 lbs limit again, but so far have no mobility restrictions!
Each pregnancy is different and each doctor's take is different. Mostly, if you are uncomfortable with something then ask questions and if you are still not happy then ask for a second option from a different doctor.
Good luck!
Kristyn

Hi Srisri,
Kristyn is a great source of info about cerclages, she's had quite a few! I would question why your dr is waiting until the 19th week for the cerclage, as the risk of complications go up each week. Do you know why they are waiting? Also, If your cervix is ok and they are just doing the cerclage as a preventative measure, I don't know why you would have to be on bedrest. Typically you are on bedrest with a cerclage when your cervix is starting to show that it is having problems supporting the babies. If there are no true issues, I don't think you would have to be on bedrest. Good Luck,
Jackie

Hi Jackie ....
Nice to hear from you ......
The reason why my Dr and me happenened to extend the time of cerclage to happen is coz of my good cervix and also i cannot be on bed for so many days as prescibed by dr. As i have told u that i am in highly challenging field of profession where i cannot expect myself to be away from job and also my company offers only 3 months maternity leave and that too after the delivery and so...
Bye..

Hi! The things I was told to watch for after my cerclage was having more than 4 contractions in 1 hr, or for red blood. If it was brown blood it would most likely be old blood making it's way our from have the cerclage placed. But red blood would indicate a new bleed, which could be a problem.
Good Luck!

Cerclage @ 13 weeks: Hi I just got my cerclage done 4 days ago and was just wondering is there...
Re: Cerclage @ 13 weeks
Jackie is right on...the main things I've always been told to watch for are 4 or more contractions in one hour (drink lots of water and go pee often as a dehydration and a full bladder can cause irritation to your uterus and cause contractions), bleeding or heavy spotting, of course, backache, naseua and just a feeling that something isn't right is always a reason to call. Oh, and a fever over 101 is always on the list of things my OB says to watch.
Good luck! Join us in the Pregnant and Fabulous thread if you would like some chatting or support. I'm in there right now and a few other ladies. (I also have a cerclage and it's my 3rd one so let me know if you ever have any questions)
Wishing you a long and boring pregnancy,

Upcoming cerclage
Hello all. First I would like to say that I wish I had know about this website last year when I was going through my preterm pregnancy. I am currently 8 weeks pregnant with my second child, and will have a cerclage done between 12 and 14 weeks. The decision is still pending. I had an emergency cerclage placed at 20 weeks with my first baby due to my cervix being dilated 3cm. It only lasted for 7 weeks because my incompetent cervix was detected late in my pregnancy. My baby was born weighing 2lbs 1oz. Well she is now 1 years old, 18 lbs, and a ball of fire! She is definitely a MIRACLE CHILD. I know with this one, I will be on strict bed rest. If my doctor tells me that I don't have to, I will place myself on strict bed rest. So glad that I have found women that I can express myself to, and that understands some of the trials and tribulations that we face.

Welcome to Share...I'm sorry you didn't have the support of this site before, and hopefully you won't need much this time, but he thread Jackie linked to is a wonderful place to get it.
If you need anything related to cerclage feel free to send me an email by clicking on my name...I've been through it a few times and would be happy to chat if you need it. I was on strict bedrest the first time, but the second time my OB only restriced my activity...I was very upset and nervous the whole time. Turned out to work pretty well for me. I hope you find this time easier!

I'm a newbie
Hi, I just got a cerclage done two days ago and was wondering if anyone has had pain or aches in the abdominal area while urinating? I called my nurse and she told me to just watch out for it. She said it may be because I'm still tender.

Re: I'm a newbie
Do you mean the pain is while you pee (like a UTI) or just feels sore when use those muscles? Definitely keep an eye on it and if you feel it's something worth going in to the doctor for then ask for an appointment. It's worth it to be checked out even if it's for peace of mind. Drink lots of water and pee often. Did your doctor prescribe any antibiotics for you after the placement of the cerclage? My doctor did that twice for me, but not the last time so it depends on the the OB and your history. Also, feel free to join the pegnant and fabulous thread to chat with others that are in the same boat (or close to it). Pregnant and Fabulous Good luck,

Re: I'm a newbie
I don't remembering having any abdominal pain after my cerclage just a bit crampy. (but it's possible I did and just don't remember). I had what I would compare to bad menstrual cramps for the first 2 or 3 days and then they went away. Since your cerclage was just placed, I'd give it another day or two of taking it easy and see if you are still having issues.
And if you have any red discharge (like new blood, as opposed to older blood), I'd call your OB right away. But the pain you are feeling may just be because you are still recovering.
Good Luck,
Jackie

The pain is while I pee and sometimes right after. It does feel like muscle cramps a little. I don't know, I think I just might go in just to be on the safe side. I think I'm just paranoid because of all the risks that could happen. I have had seven miscarriages two of them at 18weeks and 15weeks due to my incompetent cervix. This is my first cerclage and just hope this is the one for me. This will be my first baby if it works. Also I still have the spotting and it's more like a pink peachy color. Thanks you guys for the helpful advice and concerns.

Re: Just got a cerclage
I would go in and have a urine test just to rule out a UTI...plus, it'll make you feel better. It is also very common to have bladder issues while pregnant. I have experienced bladder/pain while peeing with all three of my pregnancies that I've had a cerclag with (including this one). I know I've read a lot of other women have had it as well from this site. But, that doesn't mean you should ignore it...I'm sure it's nothing to worry about.
Good luck with your pregnancy. Kristyn

Congrats on your wife's pregnancy. I'm sorry you have found the need for a cerclage.
Cerclages can be very effective in helping prevent the cervix from dilating. Sometimes bedrest is also ordered or encouraged by the doctor, but not always. Antibiotics may be prescribed to use for a week or so after the procedure to help prevent infection, which is one of the more common risks with cerclage. Unfortunately, the risk of infection is there throughout the pregnancy due to it being a foreign body (according to my OB).
The earlier (12 to 16 weeks) in the pregnancy when the cerclage is done there are typically fewer risks such as water breaking or contractions starting. However, it does not mean you can't have a successful placement later in pregnancy.
Paying attention to the signs, contractions (4 or more in an hour), spotting and especially bleeding are indications something may be wrong. Your doctor should go over all of this with you.
I hope this answers some of your questions...that all being said I am on my 3rd cerclage and have had two full term babies with no problems related to my cerclages. I'm hoping for the same outcome this time.
Wishing you and your wife the best!
Kristyn

Kristyn summarized cerclages pretty well. She's had a lot of experience so she's a great voice on this topic. As far as what to expect with the placement, I dug up an old discussion I started right before I got my cerclage and was scared. There are lots of posts about people's experiences including mine, about what to expect from the actual procedure. I wanted to add one more thing, hopefully another bit of something positive for you and your wife...
My oldest was a 32 weeker and there is no confirmed reason as to why. During my second pregnancy we assumed all would go fine, but I found out I was dilating and funneling at 14 weeks. I got my cerclage that afternoon. This is also when I was on bedrset for 6 months, but we made it and have a healthy 3 1/2 year old.

2nd pg - need cerclage?
You ladies are so knowledgeable and supportive of each other I just had to join! I am part of a mom's networking site... but I didn't find anyone on there with problems similar to mine so I am reaching out to you wonderful ladies.
I have an almost 2 yo dd... I went into preterm labor at 23 weeks and was on terbutylene, procardia, bedrest in and out of the hospital. I feel blessed she was born at 38w6d. I contracted constantly with her and my cervix varied between .7 and 1.5 after 23 weeks. So now I am 10 weeks along... my first appt at 8 weeks my cervix was 2.9. My doc was on maternity leave so I saw a NP - she said they would check my cervix again at 12 weeks and that a cerclage may be suggested but that they aren't used that much any more. Is this true? I feel like it could be effective but really don't know that much. Seems like 2.9 is pretty low to be starting out... what about 17P shots? Anyone have experience with them? Thanks again!!!

2nd pg - need cerclage?: You ladies are so knowledgeable and supportive of each other I just had to join!...
Re: 2nd pg - need cerclage?
HI and welcome to Share! I'm surprised that your NP says cerclages aren't used much anymore. I know a number of women who have had them. Granted, I know a lot of moms in high risk pregnancies so that could make the difference. If you want my opinion... your cervix is shortened a bit already and I would seriously consider a cerclage. They tend to be quite successful and the risk of having one placed is lowest between 12 and 14 weeks into the pregnancy. The highest risk is of infection so they might give you antibiotics to help ward that off. As far as 17P shots, I had those too. They are not bad although you will read stories about them being painful. I didn't think it was any worse than a flu shot, so totally worth it. The complications are minor (sore shot site, moodiness, headaches) when you compare it to having a preemie in the NCIU for a long time. In my case, my daughter was a 25 weeker due to IC or PTL (they couldn't tell me for sure which happened first). When I got pregnant again I was given a cerclage and 17P shots. I carried my son until 38.5 weeks when they induced me because there was fear he was getting too big. I wish you lots of luck. Check out our discussion for pregnant moms here: Pregnant and Fabulous? You'll find lots of support from other women in your same position. Hugs,
Jackie

I posted in the pregnancy section...in short your cervix is already short according to everything I've read and learned through my experiences as Jackie said...I would strongly encourage you to consider the cerclage. I posted more in the other thread, so I won't repeat myself and bore you! Good luck Kristyn
