PostPartum Depression and NICU

Kristen_and_Aleksey - 06:50pm Dec 25, 2008 EST

I am coping with some serious postpartum depression along side with having Aleksey in the NICU at Magee woman's hospital. It's been a rough ride, Aleksey was a 30 weeker and while he is growing well and strong with only minor set backs, I am not doing so well. My husband while caring and supportive really doesn't understand how hard this is for me right now, especially with all sorts of weird thoughts running through my head.

I have an appointment with a counselor, which for me was hard to make since I am also a PSY.D myself. I -know- the theory behind what I am experiencing, and I've delt with clients who are experiencing it or worse, but I feel like somehow I am weak for requiring a visit to a councilor myself. Has anyone here ever been through PPD and how did you cope with life during it?

Welcome to Share...and congratulations on Aleksey, I know how hard this NICU can...my son was also in the NICU and it was such a battle.
I have to say that I think it's wonderful that your going to go see someone...never look at it as weak, I think it's takes an amazing amount of strength to admit your not feeling right, and even more strength to do something about it. I did not have PPD, but I have struggled with PTSD....I did write a short note on this in the community center http://www.shareyourstory.org/webx/Share%20Home/Community%20Center/The%20Share%20Community%20Blog/ if you scroll down it's I believe the 4th or 5th one down.

I think your doing a great job, keep your chin up and take care of you...you'll need to be at full strength when your little boy comes home!

Warmly
Kate

Looking forward to seeing you at Shareunion October 1-3 in Atlanta, GA!!

Kristen~

Congratulations on the birth of your sweet little one. I know how overwelming the whole situation of a new baby and the NICU can be. I think you are an amazing woman to know that you need some extra help to work through your thoughts. You know that through your job, you have helped many, and now it's your turn. Don't be ashamed for doing what's best for you. I look forward to hearing updates as you can!

Surviving 26 week triplet...2 angels, & a 36 week singleton.

I commend you for making an appointment to speak with a counselor, that is a great first step. It takes a lot of courage to do this, I hope the session goes well for you.

Kristen-

I can totally relate to what you are going through. I've dealt with PPD and just the though of what I went through sends chills throughout my body. Its such a horrible thing to face day to day and I am praying that you find the strength to get through all of this. I will also keep Aleksey in my prayers and know that we are all here for you.

Hugs,
Maria
