Our Shining Star- Denise

Sheriff - 08:18pm Feb 1, 2009 EST

This month’s shining star may not be a lead singer in a band, but this Mama truly rocks. She is a major part of Share, and brings many families hope and healing through her volunteer work, kind words and heartfelt dedication. I am proud to announce Denise, author of (weerock), as February’s Shining Star.

Denise’s commitment to the March of Dimes is at the core of her service. After the premature arrival and passing of her firstborn son, Phillip, at twenty-five weeks gestation, Denise made a life long commitment to the March of Dimes. Despite the best medical intervention, her second born, Leighton, also came early at thirty weeks gestation. Emerson, her third born child, was also a preemie born at thirty-three weeks.

“Giving back to an organization that, quite literally, is the reason my daughters are here is very rewarding for me. Providing support to families who are starting their own journey is very fulfilling,” she said. Volunteering has also proved to be very healing for Denise. She seeks to prevent other families from experiencing the deep pain her family has endured. Denise is a great source of support for families who have experienced a loss, and those who are enduring life in the NICU.

Denise’s goals for Share also rock. She hopes to see every NICU in the country promoting the site. “Share is such an amazing community filled with some really compassionate, supportive members. I am so proud to be a part of such an awesome site…and want to see it promoted in every single NICU!” Denise vows to be a lifelong volunteer for the March of Dimes- her gratitude towards this organization is immense.

Despite working a full time job and being a full time mom, Denise carves out substantial time to volunteer. She is on a number of committees and served in various roles for the MOD. She was the Chair of the Leadership Committee for Share from 2007-2008, and now serves as Chair of the Advisory Council for Share. She was the Family Team Committee Chair for her local chapter from 2006-2008, was on the National Mission Family Advisory Council from 2007-2008, and was Ambassador Family in 2006 and a top Family Team from 2006-2008. She is also currently on the CNAC for her local NICU Family Support Site.

“Teaching my girls to give back is…important. Knowing I have the potential to prevent a family from experiencing the pain my family has endured is enough motivation for me,” she said.

Denise proves to be an inspiration to many families new to the NICU world. Her drive, dedication and enthusiasm are immeasurable. Denise would argue that she is also a student, and her greatest teachers are her children.

“My son taught me unconditional love. In a few short hours, that little boy taught me more than I could have learned in a lifetime. He fought so hard to survive. Leighton and Emerson have taught me patience, joy, and how to laugh aloud. They taught me how to be a kid again…and how to love with all my heart and soul,” she said.

Therefore, while Denise continues to provide hope to families worldwide through her countless hours of service, her source of inspiration is very close to home. There is no doubt that these Rocks definitely shine.

A moment in our arms, a lifetime in our hearts.

Denise-

Oh goodness, I don't even know where to start. I'll start with the obvious! You are a shining star. What amazes me is not that you do so much, you are a mover and shaker, it is that you do so with a true genuineness and compassion that reaches across oceans.

You rock Miss Rock!

Have questions about RSV/flu season. Come join us for our next live chat, Thursday, December 10th at 2 p.m. EST with our very own Dr. Scott Berns.

You know Dee, you were one of the first person I remember "meeting" on Share. I followed your blog and checked it often. It gave me peace to know that you actually had been in my shoes and then I read and saw all that you do for the MOD and for Share...I was amazed and hoped it would help me in my journey.

Big hugs and congrats!! Thank you for everything my friend!!

Love,

Kelly

Denise-

I am so honored to have such a wonderful friend and supporter! To one of the very first people that have followed my (and as you have stated 'your'!!!) daughters story from the start, I love you. I know that you have provided me with so much encouragement, guidance, and perspective, I cannot imagine the hundreds of others that feel that way as well.

You truly are one of a kind and such an inspiration to others, that I can't imagine anyone more deserving of this award. One day whe your girls get older, they will understand how much their momma ROCKS, as I am certain that Phillip already understands that as he looks down from above. I am very proud of you, we are very proud of you, and keep up the incredible work!

XOXO, Kelly

Oh Denise! I'm so glad that you are finally honored with all that you do for the March of Dimes and for Share. Our community isn't the same without you.

You were one of the first few "friends" that I met. Who knew that 3 years later, you'd be one of my closest true friend? Crazy, I know, but I'm so fortunate and blessed by it. Thank you for your friendship.

congratulations!!!

XOXO,
Jac
