Our Shining Star- Sam
Sheriff - 01:25pm Mar 4, 2009 EST
Living life to the fullest is this month’s Shining Star’s focus. She owes much of this perspective to her daughter, Daisy, born at twenty-eight and a half weeks. I am proud to announce Sam (Janney Mom), author of Yankee Doodle Daisy, as this month’s Shining Star.
In 2005, Sam’s family welcomed their daughter into this world— Daisy was nearly twelve weeks early and Sam’s world would forever change because of her tiny miracle. With no level three NICU in her current home state of Wyoming, Sam learned about various supports and services available to families across state lines and now shares this knowledge with other local families. With her job on the Governor’s Planning Council on Developmental Disabilities, Sam talks and connects with these families by sharing valuable information and, most importantly, her personal story.
In addition to working on the Governor’s Planning Council, Sam is an active member of Share. She stumbled across Share while doing research on prematurity. It was with Share, that she found families able to relate to her experience. From the first winter, holed up at home to avoid RSV to heading to school for the first time, members of Share walked with Sam the entire way. For these reasons, Sam views Share as a second family. Sam also volunteers her time for Share, and is the creator of the new Share Your Story newsletter.
Her involvement with the March of Dimes extends to the March for Babies as well, where she also volunteers her time. Sam feels that her involvement and the connections she has made through her volunteerism is priceless, but, more importantly, “…we are making the futures of other families brighter and their babies healthier,” she said.
Sam’s experience as a NICU parent made her “tougher” and it also made her respect “the amount of work it takes to have a healthy, term pregnancy.” Her son, Caleb, was born in 2007 at thirty-seven weeks!
Over the past few years, Daisy has taught her family that there are “no excuses.” Life must be lived to the fullest; Daisy has made huge strides and her future is definitely bright. In Sam’s words, “…the little flower is doing great!”
There is no doubt that, Sam’s impact is also in full bloom.
In appreciation of her hard work and dedication to the mission, Sam will receive a specially engraved “Share Your Story” watch courtesy of HourPower watches.
