One Year Post-NICU

Lorri - 10:00am Mar 12, 2009 EST

Where did the time go? Exactly one year ago today, I was having a baby almost 6 weeks early. We were very confident that he would be just fine........due to all the precautions that we had taken. As expected, Charlie was healthy. He wasn't, however, finished developing his lungs. After having a 33 weeker (my sweet Annie), I was expecting a short NICU stay. My 33 weeker stayed 15 days in the NICU. It was so hard! Charlie was only there for 5 days, but the were LONG (being on the vent even for two days seems like FOREVER)! It just isn't "normal" for a mother to leave the hospital without her baby!!!!! Today, Charlie is doing very well. He has had to visit a Pediatric Pulmonologist due to his asthma, but his overall health is great. After having two preemies, my heart sinks each time I hear of another premature baby entering this world. My heart BREAKS each time I see the "Angel Wings" ambulance fly by me with a NICU baby on board. My prayer, today and everyday, is that preventative measures will be taken to avoid all premature births.

THATS A WONDERFUL PRAYER
MY SON WAS BORN A 25 WEEKER .. 500 GRAMS!
HE SPENT 2 MONTHS ON A VENTILATOR
AND THEN ANOTHER 8 ON OXYGEN
HE STILL HAS LUNG ISSUES, ASTHMA etc
BUT HE IS 4 NOW AND DOING WONDERFULLY
THE SAD PART WAS THAT THIS COULD HAVE BEEN PREVENTED
I HAD A TERRIBLE NEGLIGENT OB/GYN THAT MISDIAGNOSED ME
NEARLY KILLED US BOTH!
ANYWAYS .. GOD BLESS TO U AND YOUR FAMILY

Welcome to Share! I have a 34 weeker that spent 13 days in the NICU. Even one day is tough, it is so hard to see your baby look so helpless.

This is a great place to come to network with people who have been there before.

Lorri- Charlie is so stinking cute, I can hardly stand it! Welcome to Share and thank you for sharing your stories of success with us. Like you said, no matter how long your NICU stay is, it is one day too long. No one should have to enter into the NICU world. I know exactly what you mean about the Angel Wings ambulance thing.... every time I see a EMT helicopter flying overhead, I always bow my head and thank God for everything He has blessed me with. Best of luck to you!

Love, Kelly

I'm so sorry that little Charlie is doing well now! He's such a cutie, and you are right...it breaks your heart after you've been there and done that to think of other families having to go through those tough times.

Tracy
