My Micro Preemie.

Jace's Mommy - 10:45am Mar 25, 2009 EST

My beautiful son Jace was born on 2-21-09. He was supposed to be here on 6-9-09, 16 weeks early. At first he was doing so well he was on just the nasal oxygen within days of his birth but then when he was 2 1/2 weeks old he took a nose dive. He has been having kind of a difficult time in the NICU. He somehow got an extremely rare infection that nobody in the hospital not to mention the NICU has ever seen. He seems like he is winning the battle with it. I don't think they wanted to scare us but I think we came close to losing him. So far he has no brain bleeding and his PDA is small. I want to be so happy and celebrate everything that is going well but I am terrified there is something just waiting around the corner to send him into another nose dive.
He's my only baby I can't have anymore, I am terrified of losing my little Jace. Has anybody else had a micro preemie who had a hard time in the NICU and pulled through? I am just so scared I need some type of hope.

Congratulations on the birth of Jace and welcome to Share. It sounds like he is an incredible fighter. Share is full of many people that have stood in your shoes and have happy outcomes. The NICU is always a rollercoaster ride with many ups and downs.

Please keep us updated on Jace and I will have you and him in my prayers.

Jace's mama,
I'm so sorry for what you are having to go through, this whole experience is so hard. My baby boy Jack was born 13 weeks early, but was the size of a 16 week early baby. He had a very rough start, on the ventilator, nitric oxide and a high frequency vent for a month, and is still on oxygen. He also had an infection and had to get 2 weeks of antibiotics. The doctors at several points in time did not know if he would make it but he HAS! Don't give up hope - these little guys fight hard!

Congratulations on the birth of your son. I dont have any experience with a 24W preemie, but many moms/dads here on Share can certainly relate. It is great that his PDA is small and there were no bleeds.

Please keep us posted.

Take care

Welcome to Share and congratulations on the birth of Jace!!

I am so sorry that he's facing such trials early on, but I'm sure this little fighter is going to show his stuff and come home a winner!! My daughter was a 27 weeker, but was only 1 lb. 4 oz. She was very sick, but is a wild and wide open 5 1/2 year old now. I hope that you are facing the same situation in a few years. Keep us posted!!

Congrats on the birth of Jace. My fighter Kaden was also 16 weeks early and the same weight as your Jace. Being a mirco Preemie is a struggle but over time it will all work out. Kaden has some ups and down. He spent 112 days in the Nicu and came home on oxygen. But all the doctor say he is doing so well. so do not give up hope. These babies are fighters.

Please keep up posted and I will have Jace and your family in my prayers.

Let me first say that a nurse in the NICU said to me, It's always a one step forward and a one step back. My little girl pulled through. She only weighed 1 pound and 9.3 ounces. Keep hanging in there. I know that it is tough. I sometimes felt like screaming because I was so angry that she was going through what she was going through. She came home on oxygen and a apnea monitor. Being there and letting him hear your voice and I know that sometimes they won't let you touch, but if you can touch him, that helps him grow and know that comfort in his mommy. It will be okay, I will keep him in my prayers.

HI,
Congrats on your new son! Oh the NICU roller coaster,,,many of us have been on it. Sorry you are going through tough time now. My daughter was 15 weeks early her weight and length was exactly the the same as Jace 's! She was intubated for 2.5 months, then Cpap, then cannula for 1 year at home. PDA was ligated, rough time in the NICU for 4.5 months. Now she is a thriving, very happy, healthy and busy 2.5 year old. This little ones are resilient, they amazingly pull through!! Every year brings new technology and new ways of treatment , so I am sure the way they do things in the NICU now is probably much better !! So just try to be positive and talk to him and let him feel your presence!! Try to get some rest yourself, you won't have enough of it when he is home!! Keep us posted and good luck!

This sounds familiar

My son was also born at 24 weeks and spent 5 mos. in the NICU. He too started out doing great on nasal cannula and then had to go on the ventilator. He then got an uncommon fungal infection for which he had positive cultures for over a month. The head neonatologist made us feel great when he told us the antifungal they were using to fight the infection had never even been used in their NICU before. Anyway, let me just say Judah had so many complications while in the NICU it was hard to believe we would ever be able to take him home. But he is now 10 months old, home with us, off oxygen, and doing great. All I can say is hang in there; sometimes it feels like there's no light at the end of the tunnel and each day is like you're getting deeper in instead of closer to the end. That will change, these little ones are truly miracles and you have to hang in there and have faith in them and in God. Keep us posted!
