abdominal cerclage??

GingerK - 04:48pm Apr 29, 2009 EST

For those of you who have had an abdominal cerclage, did you have it placed pre-pregnancy or after pregnant? Also, who preformed it (what state)? Also, is there anyone who has failed an abdominal cerclage? I have lost 2 babies due to IC and have had one failed vaginal cerclage.

Thanks
Ginger

Abdominal Cerclage

HI Rama,

You may want to check out the website Abbyloopers.org and join their group on Yahoo. They have a lot of information about abdominal cerclage (the many methods and doctors who specialize in this treatment). There are a lot of success stories on that website too.

Keep hope alive! Wishing you good luck on the journey!

Hi Ginger,

I have recently had an abdominal cerclage and I had it before I got pregnant on the advice of my doctor. You can have them when you are pregnant, but from what I have heard it is risky and they have to be done before you are 8 weeks.
You also need to do thorough research on the subject of which doctor to choose, the surgery is still quite new and we had trouble finding a doctor who had done an abdominal cerclage before.
The surgery itself is pretty invasive, I was in hospital for 5 days and pleasant it was not. But, it will all be worth it if this works for us. I have had 2 late term (23 wk) miscarriages, and a premature baby and the normal cerclage did not work for me.
I hope this helps, if you want to ask me anything feel free.

Terri

Hi Sara,

Welcome to Share. Thank you for sharing your story with Ginger. I am sorry for your many losses but thankful you had such a wonderful doctor who was able to get you far enough along to have Charlie. I hope Charlie is doing well and we hope to hear all about her in the future.

Take care,
Ellen

Hello My name is Denekia I am 15 almost 16 weeks pregnant. I had a cercloge placed at about 12 weeks. But my cervix kept getting thinner and thinner. I am now in the hospital because I have delitaed to 1 cm. Is there any one at there that has had success with a cercloge?

Hi Denicka! Welcome to Share. There are a lot of women here who had had successful pregnancies with a cerclage. One of our regulars, Kristyn, is probably giving birth the her 4th baby (3rd with a cerclage) and all of the cerclage pregnancies have gone full term. I wish she was here to chime in but I imagine she'll be busy for a while.

I had a cerclage in my 2nd pregnancy. My first pregnancy gave me my daughter at 25 weeks gestation. (Healthy and 6 now). When I got pregnant again, I had a cerclage, and 17P shots and carried to 38.5 weeks.

So please keep in mind there are many good stories out there with happy endings. Check out the "Pregnant? on bedrest?" discussion to find lots of other women who are dealing with a high risk pregnancy and looking for some emotional support. I think talking with other women through Share really kept me sane in my 2nd pregnancy so I really encourage you to check it out - it's nice to know you are not alone.

    Re: abdominal cerclage??

    Denekia,

I am here...I am the person Jackie mentioned...no baby yet for me. Jackie is right - I've had three cerclages and gone full term with all of them. With my first I was funneling and 1 cm dilated at 14 weeks when I had my cerclage placed. My cervix was around 3.0 most of that pregnancy until about 26 weeks and it started shortening. However, I did not dilate more than my 1 cm until labor. I did go into labor the day after having my cerclage removed at 37w5d and he was born the next morning. (I was on bedrest for 6 months)

My second cerclage there was no problem before placement and again around 26 weeks I started having shortening, but I actually don't recall exactly what my measurements were. I did have some PTL with her and she arrived safely at 37w6d 1 week after my cerclage was removed.

This pregnancy, it was placed with no problem other than I have a prolapsed uterus. I had PTL starting around 23 weeks and have needed some bedrest and have taken Procardia since 23 weeks until about 34 weeks when I started taking it more as needed due to the side effects. I also started 17P at 30 weeks due to all the contractions. My cerclage was removed last Friday due to being 2 cm dilated and I'm still pregnant!

I wish you the best and Julie is also a great source of encouragement...she has been on hospital bedrest, but is still pregnant with virtually no cervix...she is a huge inspiration!

Good luck and keep us posted!

    Kristyn
