When did you get your cerclage?

Sophia & Asyia's Mommy - 06:19pm Aug 25, 2009 EST

I am 25 1/2 weeks. I found out at my appointment today that I am 1cm dilated and 80% effaced. My Midwife has put in the paperwork to get a cerclage approved for me as soon as possible. But I thought I read somewhere that most places wont do them past 20 weeks????? I'm concerned and worried and just was wondering when you guys got yours put in.

Thank you,
Veronica

I know that 25 weeks is pretty late for a cerclage, but I don't know if a doctor would refuse to do it or not. I don't think I have heard of them much past 20 weeks. When I got mine, it was in my second pregnancy (my first child was born at 25 weeks due to IC) and was done at 13 weeks. I know the risks of infection are higher the longer you wait to do the cerclage so doing it between 12-14 weeks is the best, but many women don't et them until later because there is no obvious issue that early on.

I wish you lots of luck and hope to hear you are still pregnant for many more weeks. I do know of other women who did not have a cerclage but through bedrest and other means still made it much later in the pregnancy. So keep your head high!

Re: When did you get your cerclage?

Thank you so much for your response! What you just posted is what I keep hearing everywhere I look online... I am planning on switching to a high risk OB instead of the one I have now and hopefully they will have a better idea at how to handle my situation and give me other options to postpone this little one's delivery a little longer. Again, thank you.

Emergent cerclage at 25 weeks

Hi. Hope all is well so far. I had an emergent cerclage done at 25 weeks because of funneling. I have been on bedrest since and taking medication to prevent contractions. I am now 31 weeks. This is my second pregnancy. My first baby came at 35 weeks and in retrospect we figured it was because of IC. All was well with me until 24 weeks when my Dr. noticed a considerable change in my cervix from my last month's visit. He suggested the cerclage and advised on all the complications. At the end of the day I decided to go for it in order to give my baby a good chance og getting to as close to term as possible. My doctor ended up doing a shirodkar suture instead of the conventional Mcdonald one.
After the procedure I was in the hospital for 2 days to monitor me and I didnt have any complications. The bleeding was minimal and so was the pain. So far all is well just the bedrest driving me crazy but its only for 7-8 weeks again.
Best of luck with the rest of your pregnancy..whatever you decide.

Hi Veronica,

Did you get a cerclage? I got a cerclage when my cervix was 2.5cm. I hope everything works out.
