Cerclage to prevent another preterm baby.

sherstl1 - 01:33pm Nov 13, 2009 EST

Has anyone had a cerclage done to prevent pre-term premature rupture of the membranes? My son was born premature at 33 weeks because my water broke. I spoke to my OB about having another baby and he said he would do a cerclage at 14wks and do progesterone shots every week. He said because I have already had a premature baby there is a 10% chance of still having a premature baby. He doesn't know if I have an incompetent cervix, only guessing that is shortened later in pregnancy.

Does this work? I do not want to put my son through the NICU experience again.

I know tons of women who have had cerclage to prevent IC and carried full term or nearly full term, but I can't think of anyone who had a cerclage for PROM.

I guess it would depend on why they ruptured. If your cervix opened and it put more pressure on the membranes, causing the rupture, your OB might be right.
Have you consulted with a Perinatologist (high risk OB)? They might have more insight for you and some more suggestions on how to handle a future pregnancy.

Good Luck,
Jackie

I agree with Jackie, sometimes getting a second opinion can be very reassuring.

To be honest, we don't know exactly what happened with my first pregnancy, but she was born at 31 weeks 6 days...my water broke 2 days before she was born. My cerivix had been short, then normal, so we just don't know. However, during my second pregnancy we discovered I do have IC and I had a cerclage placed at 14 weeks. I have had two cerclages and carried both babies to term. Obviously, this isn't the exact same as your situation, but I know when I was looking for answers after my first was born premature any positives I could find were comforting to me. I hope you are able to come up with a plan to help you feel more comfortable with future pregnancies.

Good luck,
Kristyn
