Cerclage Fearsjanellerandy - 04:40pm Nov 27, 2009 ESTI just had my baby Oct 27th. He was stillborn. I was 21 weeks pregnant. All my tests were normal. A couple weeks later I found out I had Incompetent Cervix. Dr. said when I get pregnant again I would have a cerclage done. We plan on trying again in January. I have been reading posts on here and I had no idea there were so many cerclages. Honestly I am scared to go through it. I don't know if I can face another heart break. I am curious to find out how long the procedure is and what they give you for pain? I think the more I find out about it the better I will feel about it.

I am so sorry that you lost your son. That's just not fair for any parent to go through. Rather than type all my info again (and try to remember it from memory) I looked up an old discussion I posted about when I was nervous for my cerclage and looking for advice. Hopefully it will help you: Cerclage discussion Good Luck!

Thanks Jackie. Reading everyone's experiences really makes me feel at ease and I have an idea of what to expect and what to ask my Dr about.

I am sorry for the loss of your son.
I have had three cerclages and each time I have been put under general anesthesia. For me, I prefer this and so do the doctors at my hospital. The procedure itself is usually quite quick. I'm only in the surgery room for about 1/2 and hour and the procedure itself is genearlly about 10 minutes. I prefer the general because I don't like the idea of being awake when I'm put in such a position.
After my first cerclage I was 14 weeks. It is during what is considered preventative time, but I was already funneling and dilating...I was on bedrest for 6 months. Last time, I had it done and was fine the next day. I only had pelvic rest restriction and lift restrictions. As my pregnancy progressed I had to sit a lot more and rest often to keep contractions and discomfort at bay. It was my 3rd pregnancy so I'm sure some of the discomfort was that. I just had my 3rd cerclage yesterday. I was up and moving in no time. I have been resting for 24 hours, but am not on bedrest. Lifting and pelvic rest are my two restrictions at this time. I have two full term healthy babies due to a cerclage and I am hoping for one more!
I understand your fears as I still worry about what might happen, but I try to be positive and upbeat and I come to Share often to share with others and learn from them. I wish you all of the best and I hope my story will help you. If you need anything else click on my name and email me by clicking on the email address.
Good luck,
Kristyn

Re: Cerclage Fears
Wow that gives me alot of hope and faith for cerclage. The only thing that scares me is being on bedrest. Did you go to a perinatologist or reg ob?
Thanks and Happy Holidays!

Hi Janelle,
I saw my OB throughout my pregnancy. She had a lot of experience with this sort of thing from a previous position, so I felt like I could trust her. It was a hard decision at first to not go with a Peri, too. Funny thing is she told me she'd be happy to recommend one but I never did follow up. This is my 3rd pregnancy with a cerclage with her and she just asked me about my Peri... Anyway, I was BORED on bedrest. Our oldest was 18 months when I was put on bedrest and she stayed with a friend. This site got me through a lot of my time. Friends sent books and movies which was a big help. I felt very flabby by the end, but I lost it all plus some By flabby I mean I had no muscle tone any more. I feared labor would be too tough after that, but it went perfectly and my baby boy was healthy Happy Holidays to you, too!

cerclege + bedrest + p17 shot
Well, i lost our twins last september to an ic at 23wks4days and like you, trying again was something we wanted to try.
We were very proactive. We had the McDonald cerclege at 13 weeks. I was really nervous but honestly, it wasn't bad at all. I had a few vaginal u/s prior to the cerclege to make sure my cervix was fine, ect.. The day of, my cervix was long and thick. The procedure took from start to finish about 40 minutes. I was given a spinal. I didn't want general due to the fact it isn't as safe for our unborn baby. Afterwards, I had 1-2 days of rest then back to normal. I had cervical u/s about every 3-4weeks to keep an eye on my cervix.
Everything was looking fine until week 22 when it was noticed I was funneling above the cerclege. I was put on home bedrest for the remainder of my pregnancy w/weekly u/s and given the p17 shot. My length has stayed about the same since the funneling, 1.7cmm - 1.9cmm. Not great but not horrible either.
I am happy to report that in 3 days I am getting my cerclege out (36wks3days). I would have NEVER guessed we could have made it this far.....wow!!
I wish you the best of luck!!
