Brain Bleed

Jace's Mommy - 12:25am Dec 4, 2009 EST

I just found out today my son Avery has a grade 3 brain bleed on one side and a grade 2 on the other.
My first son didn't have any brain bleeds so I am new to all of this.
I guess I'm curious if anybody else's baby has had that high of a grade. I'm just really scared and his Doctor seems like he doesn't want to give me a straight answer. Does this mean he will more than likely have learning and physical disabilities?
No matter what I will love my son with all my heart I just want to know why his future looks like.

Your dr may not be giving you a straight answer, because he may not know. It depends on where in the brain the bleed is and then even that varies child to child.

My daughter had a Stage 1 bleed (can't remember which side) and it resolved itself within a week or two of her birth. I remember the dr coming in and telling us, "well, that's good news. She may not be normal, but it won't be beacuse of this". Kind of heartbreaking for a parent to hear but I guess he was being honest.

I know there are other parents on here that have had childs with high level bleeds but I can't say I know all their outcomes. Hopefully someone will chime in soon and give you their experience.

Hugs,
Jackie

I agree with Jackie, he may not have given you a straight answer because he may not have known. It really does varies as I have read so many stories where children have had bleeds on both sides and are doing remarkable today.

I, myself, do not have any experience with them as my 23 weeker did not have one while she was in the NICU. However, there are several parents on Share who have children that experience bleeds and hopefully they jump in and share their experience soon.

Take good care,
Yolonda

I think it very well does depend on where the bleed is. I hope that the bleeds will resolve themselves quickly and that the dr. will be able to give you an answer that is positive.

Grade 3 bleed

My cousin just had a baby boy with a grade 3 brain bleed, and she shared the entire experience on a website called Caring Bridge, I think, which I would reccommend if you are trying to keep lots of family updated but don't want the hassle of calling or emailing so many people. Anyway, he ended up being born about 3 weeks early, c-section and had a surgery to place a shunt in his brain about a day after he was born. I think the shunt stays in forever, to help drain fluid. He is doing amazing. Actually just went home a few days ago, so he was in the hospital for about 10 days or so. They don't know if he will have developmental delays or not- time will tell that. But she has been trying to get pregnant for 7 years, so she is just happy to have a healthy baby again! It is hard to wait and see, but I was even nervous with the delays with my daughter, and she was just 11 weeks early, no surgery or brain bleeds or anything. Good luck to you and your little one, and keep us posted on the progress!
