Cerclage && bedrest

Maribel007 - 02:11pm Dec 6, 2009 EST

Last year I lost my daughter at 21 weeks.
My doctor told me it was due to an incompetant cervix && said I would have to have a cerclage done my next pregnancy.
I'm currently 7 wks && I know at about 14 wks I will have it done...my ques is will I have to be put on bedrest & what kind of things can I actually do??(movies, mall, store?) stuff like that...

I asked my doctor the same thing. I'm almost 27 weeks after 7 weeks of bed rest with an emergency cerclage. My doctor said that I will need one with every pregnancy after this. She told me that depending on cervical length they will put you on light duty. So you can go to work a few times a week but you have to limit walking and exercise. Pretty much cut out as much standing and anything that can cause pressure on your cervix. You will most likely be checked every week to two weeks and then given restrictions based on how everything looks.

Honestly (and I hate this kind of answer) but it depends on how you are doing like Jenni said. When I had my cerclage my OB didn't put me on bedrest but did put me on pelvic rest (no sex). He told me not to over do it and when I asked what that meant, he said "don,t clean the entire house in one day, do half one day and half the next". I wasn't supposed to work out, but I could shop and do all my normal activities.

Later into my pregnancy I started to dilate (around 33 weeks) and I was put on light bedrest. I could shower and use the bathroom and sit at the tables for meals but needed to be laying down as much as possible.

I do know other women that have been on hospital bedrest where they are literally not allowed out of bed, even to use the bathroom or shower. But that is usually with an emergency cerclage where they are already dilated and the stitch is just trying to buy them more time before delivery.

I wish you lots of luck in this pregnancy and hope that once the cerclage is placed everything goes well and you get more peace of mind!

Hugs,
Jackie

Momma of Sky - now 6 (32 weeker), Will - 4 years old (37 weeks) and Adalynn - 21 months (37 weeks) and Ian (38 weeks)

It is so tough to say just like the other two women mentioned. My first cerclage left me on bedrest at home for 6 months, but I was able to work every day during my second cerclage (I taught preschool at the time). This time I'm a stay at home mom...I honestly am finding it harder to rest than I did when I went to work. It just depends what your body is doing and also if your doctor believes in bedrest or not. Research doesn't show it to be effective, though I bet if you ask a lot of us here we'll say that it can work wonders!

Good luck to you during this pregnancy.

Kristyn
