P17 shot tip

Allison129 - 12:05pm Dec 9, 2009 EST

I am getting P17 shots and I have often read on here that people experience pain when getting the shot. It is a thick oil like consistency But..after receiving several at this point--one a week for the past 7 weeks... I've found that if you take the vial of progesterone and warm it up ( in your hands or arm pit --where ever!!) It helps so much!! The one time it really stung going in I didn't think to do this. But since I've made sure it's warm it hardly hurts at all. If you get a lot of irritation after getting the shot make sure they do it in a fattier area. (with my growing butt I seem to have lots more of that .

Anyway, thought I'd share my experience in case anyone else is getting these.

So far so good. Cervix still measuring over 4cm... i guess I'll never know why my baby Max came so early. I miss him so much. But now I have a little hope back for his brother still growing at 24 weeks 3 days.

That really is a great tip. I was told not to store mine in the fridge because it would get even thicker but I never thought about trying to warm it in my hands before hand. Thanks for sharing this!

I'm glad things are going well in this pregnancy, but so sorry you lost your son Max. I'm sure he's helping to watch over his little brother and will help give him a safe entrance to the world.

Hugs,
Jackie

Wow---thanks for sharing that bit of information. I've never had to go through those daily shots, but can imagine that it gets old quick....especially if it's painful. Hopefully this will help those girls who are doing all they can for their little ones.

Best wishes to this little one growing inside!! Keep us posted!

any advice

So i was wondering what are P17 shots. Im so sorry for your loss but so excited to hear that the new one is still cooking lol. I had my daughter at 23 weeks and she is now home and doing good so far. But i am pregnant again and do not want to go through the same situation. Do you anything i can do or ask my ob/gyn to help prevent this one from coming that early. I know every pregnancy is different but its hard to think positive when you already had one so early.

Hi Kailee's mom,
The 17P shots are used for women who have a history of pre-term labor (PTL). The concept behind them is that the medication causes your uterine muscles to react less and you to be less likely to have contractions. Some women with IC use them as a preventative measure (so nothing disrupts their cervix)but mostly they are used for women who had issues with PTL.

Re: P17 shot tip

Thank you. Well went i went for my check up with my ob/gyn after having my daughter he had mentioned something about giving me shots to help prevent it when i got pregnant again. Maybe this is what he was talking about. I havent been in to see him yet because i just found out i was prego and i have no insurance so i am in the process of getting pregnany medicaid. I will be sure to ask him about them. Thank you so much. I really dont want to have to go through that long hard road again. So did the shots help you with your 2nd child?

Yes, they did. My daughter was a 25 weeker and my son stayed put and was 38.5 weeks when he was born. I always said if I wound up pregnant again, I would definitely ask for the shots again.

    Re: P17 shot tip

According to my OB the shots help keep your cervix from softening, which is not what I had read previously so I'm not 100% sure, but it sounds like your doctor was probably talking about this.

I hope this pregnancy goes much more easily for you and you are able to get all the support you need.

    Re: P17 shot tip

Yea my cervix i believe was not the problem or maybe that was why my membranes ruptured to early. I am so scared for this pregnancy and i think you for your advice. I am only like 6 or 7 weeks but even this early i am scared. So hopefully once i get to my ob he will put me on these and i will have a healthy full term baby. Thank you.

Typically the shots start around 16 weeks and continue until 34 weeks.
