Short cervix with funneling

janicemp - 02:59pm Dec 26, 2009 EST

Hi Everyone. Here's my story: Ten years ago, I had a cone biopsy because of an abnormal pap. 7 years ago, my husband and I started trying to get pregnant. 2 miscarriages (due to chromosome problems) and a failed adoption later, we did an IVF cycle with PGD and BINGO! So, needless to say, we've worked very hard to get this far (23w5d) and now I'm scared to death we're falling apart because my stupid body is an incompetent baby grower.

Here's the scoop on the cervix checks: 1st check (@18 weeks) = 3.3. Two weeks later (@20 weeks) = 2.8. Two more weeks (@22 weeks) = still 2.8. Monday the 21st of Dec (@23 weeks) = 2.1..with funneling! Everybody freaked out...including me. Luckily I also had an ob appointment that same day. Peri talked to ob...both decided bed rest was the right thing to do...sent me to the hospital to see if I was having contractions...no...yay. So, I've been at home, in the bed, not moving since then. I'm back on progesterone suppositories. We're shooting for 35. That seems like forever. I mean I'm sure I can do it...LO is the most important thing in the world. I'm just scared...that's all.

I spend about 90% of my time in the bed searching for short cervix stories with positive outcomes...it seems to be working. The new part for me is the funneling. I would love to hear more positive stories. Thanks.

My biggest piece of advice is don't rush it...you really want to be beyond 36 weeks if possible. I have known a number of babies that have had to go to the NICU for one reason or another due to immaturity even at 36 and 37 weeks, but that's my own opinion! I know those last few weeks are so irritating - I was on bedrest for 6 months with my second pregnancy. From week 14 to week 37, but worth every moment to bring him home with me.

Good luck!

Kristyn

    Re: Short cervix with funneling

I guess you are right Kristyn! I shouldn't do anything stupid. I went for my Doctor's visit today. Things are looking good. Baby is 6 pounds already! They plan to give last progesterone injection next week = 36 week and stop terbutalin pump a week later.
My husband is so tempted to put me in a wheel chair and take me to any nearby store so that we could do some shopping together for the baby before he/she arrives. I am planning to pick a store closer to hospital!
I hope these last bits of such an eventful and worrisome pregnancy pass with ease. Thanks for your support!

    Re: Short cervix with funneling

    Ayesha,
Sounds like you are doing great at keeping that baby in there - I know the feeling of going crazy towards the end of it all especially since you have worked so hard to stay pregnant. For me, I've had two babies in the NICU (12 days and 2 days) and even though they were short stays it was some of the hardest times I've ever experieneced...taking your baby home with you when you are discharged is the best feeling and I want everyone to experience it!
I cannot wait to hear how you are doing!

    Delivered on 04.24.10

Hi Ladies! I had been away for sometime. Yes I delivered a week after my Terbutalin pump was turned off, at 36 7/7 day. . The VBAC failed and ended up in a c-section. Epidural gave me hypotension and I also bled during surgery . They had to transfuse me 2 units. Her name is Nabiha. Birth weight was 5 lb 11 oz and it dropped 10 % down within first three days. I was unable to produce good amount of milk so had to start formula supplementation. I had hard time accepting the fact that my baby will not be exclusively breast fed. Anyhow, one can not have all that is desired.
I am gearing up tp back to work in 6 days. Have some FMLA related stuff that mendates me to return soon for my residency training.
    Thanks everyone for your support.
    Ayesha

Congratulations on your little girl! I'm sorry delivery didn't go as planned and you are having problems with your milk supply. I guess the best laid plans don't always work out.

    Good Luck returning to work!

    Hugs,
    Jackie

Ayesha, I have been wondering about you and how you are doing! Congrats on your little girl. I'm sorry about nursing - that can be a very frustrating situation. Again, congrats on doing such an amazing job getting your little one here!

    op update

Hi All...op here with an update. So, I just re-read my post. My goal was to make it to 35 weeks with IC and no cerclage. I got off of bedrest at 37 weeks and the baby was born exactly on my due date...go figure. However, I did end up having an emergency c-section because the baby wasn't tolerating contractions very well. He's two weeks old today and he's the love of my life. So so so so glad we made it!!
