P-17 shots

sherstl1 - 09:14am Dec 30, 2009 EST

Has anyone heard anything negative about P-17 shots? My husband said he read a couple of articles linking it to autism. My OB wants to give them to me when I get pregnant again. I guess I will get a second opinion once I am pregnant from a Perinatologist.

Presently on them!

Hi- I am presently on the weekly injections and I have had no side affects other then an itchy injection site. I have been on the shots since 16 weeks and I am now 30 weeks My doctor recommended them after I lost twins at 23 weeks. There are many conflicting studies, I have heard about the boys urethra not liinng up but I believe this is easily fixed after birth if it does happen. There are also no long term studies in the United States. My doctor says there ahve been other long term studies in other countries and there seem to be no direct links to any other defects. But who really knows anything?? You have to talk to your doctor and think about your personal situation and medical reasoning for the shots. Only you can decide what to do. Also, the shots are supposed to calm and strenghthen your utreus, but they are not positive of why it works! Doctors realy arent all that smart

Mom to Kimberly (25 wkr, now 6 yrs!) & Matthew (38.5 wkr, almost 4 yrs!)

Hi there! Welcome to Share. The ladies above are right that past studies have shown a higher rate of Hypospadias where the urethra does not exit the penis at the right spot, but other studies have shown that to be untrue. It is able to be corrected should it happen but since the genitals are mostly formed by the time you start 17P it really shouldn't have much effect.

I have never seen anything about autism and 17P shots. I think there are a ton of people who are scared about any type of shot and links to autism. Both my OB and my peri were super supportive of 17P and said they had seen great results from women who had taken it. I had them in my 2nd pregnancy and my son who is almost 4 is completely normal - well, as normal as a 3 year old can be!
