Looking back at 2009
AdyDewey - 10:16am Dec 30, 2009 EST
No question – 2009 was a year of several advocacy wins for moms and babies.
In Washington, March of Dimes e-Advocates’ e-mails, phone calls and visits helped convince Congress to expand the Children's Health Insurance Program so that more pregnant women and children can get the care they need. Our volunteers also helped pass the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act to reduce exposure to second-hand smoke and encourage more women and children not to take up smoking. And they helped to secure federal funding for prematurity-related research as well as ongoing funding for the National Children's Study.
Closer to home, March of Dimes volunteers helped bring about 64 victories in multiple states. These "wins" touch many important issues including newborn screening, smoking cessation programs, and birth defects surveillance.
