OUR BABY GIRL.

Jan 27, 2010 07:52pm (EST)

They gave our baby a 1:141 chance of Down's, but so far she looks healthy.

So I am a 31 year old with no familiy history very healthy and active with a perfect baby boy of 12 months. I am pregnant again, 17 weeks and six days with a baby girl. I recenlty had a mini crisis when I found out from my quad screen that I had a 1:141 chance of having a baby with down syndrome. (Normal for my age is 1:588). My numbers were .80 AFP MOM, 1.55 HCG MOM, .28 Estriol MOM, and 1.04 Inhibin-A MOM. So they weren't way out there because 1.0 is average or "normal" for each.

Still I was freaking out. I was sure I would do an amnio because that is the only sure way to know. But after doing the ultrasound they found nothing abnormal. The genetic counselor said they would now consider our risk to be 1:282. She quoted a 1:300 risk of miscarriage from amniocentesis. So faced with those numbers I decided against the amnio. However, I am going back in three weeks to do another ultrasound if they find any abnormalities then, I will do the amnio. If they do not find anything in 3 weeks, I think I will just trust in my instincts that everything is ok and not subject my baby girl to the added risk.

If they do find anything next time then I have to know for sure because I need to be prepared for a special needs child.

The ultrasound is not conclusive they could still not be able to tell and she still MIGHT have down syndrome, but the chances are so small and after seeing the perfect pictures on the ultrasound and her little hands moving around, I feel like it is all going to ok.

I hope my story might help someone in the same situation.
