desats whilst feeding??Olivias_mum - 04:34pm Jan 31, 2010 ESThi i had my baby girl olivia on 15th december 2009 at 29 weeks, shes was ventilated for 8 days then cpap for 4 weeks n shes on low flow oxygen at the moment, she has been in about 0.01 L/min today. She is having trouble with bottle feeding, requiring extra oxygen to keep her sats up and desating to the 60s and 70s whilst feeding. Has anyone got any ideas on how to stop her desating? she seems to choke on the milk so we have tried low flow teats which have helped a bit. She was 2lb 11 at birth and now 4lb 11 and on alternate bottle/NG tube feeds. She is 36 weeks gestational age. Thanks xxx

My son had similar issues of choking and desatting while feeding, which also kept us in the hospital. He had a barium swallow study, where they take xrays while feeding to track the milk, which showed he was aspirating. We started thickening the milk with food thickener (there are different brands, but we used Thick & Easy) and the choking episodes stopped (unless the milk wasn't thick enough). We ended up thickening for a year and since then he has been fine with drinking liquids. If the other suggestions aren't helping, you may want to ask your daughter's doctor about a swallow study.

We had the same with my son....FEED HER SIDELINE! this was the only thing keeping us from going home! He was born at 32 weeks but weighed only 2 pounds 14 ounces, we took him home at 3 1/2 pounds! while taking a bottle he would choke....and have brady's too, even while sitting up, we started feeding him sideline and have had no problems since, lay your baby straight out infront of you like put her on her side on your leg so her head is on your knee and her feet are on your thigh touching your tummy, keep her on her side her whole body, the nicu cpr lady told us this was like breastfeeding this way the milk puddles up in their cheek and not down their throat causing them to choke, this way they can keep it puddled in their cheek and if they get to much they can spit it out or swallow it slowly....also the nipples in the nicu are not slow flow, so try to get a deff nipple too! or while your feeding sideline if she starts to deset or choke turn the nipple down so she isnt getting any for a little, just pace her! hope this helps!
