5 weeks in the NICU

march10 - 03:47pm Apr 13, 2010 EST

My son was born at 30 weeks and was small for his age. He weighed 2 lbs and 10 ounces when he was born and he lost 10 ounces. He has been in the NICU for 5 weeks tomorrow and he is only 2 lbs 15 ounces. He gains weight and then it goes down. Other than that he is healthy. I live 2 hours away and I am staying at the Ronald McDonald house by myself. My husband comes back and fourth because of his work. I have 3 other children at home. It looks like at least 5 to 6 more weeks before he goes home. I have 2 weeks left before I have to go to work and I do not want to leave my son here! I am depressed and stressed out! When will I start seeing my son gain weight and keep it?

March 10: Even tough he was small in weight being borne at 30 weeks are a big + in his condition. I know the desesperation of not seeing them everyday, and the guilty feeling for your other children back home. Keep faith and know that even tough you can´t be with him everyday he knows you are always thinking of him. Can you talk to a social worker, that give you some advise, or talk to your employer to let them know about your situation? maybe they can considerate your case. I have know many mothers here prefer to ask their extra time, when baby comes out of the NICU to be with them all the time at home. I really hope your baby gets his weight and he can go with you and your family home. Keep up faith.
Thinking and praying for you,

Lorena
