Keeping in Touch

Katie87 - 10:17pm Jan 6, 2012 EST

Hello All- I have a non-medical related topic here. I wondered if anyone out there tried to keep in touch with nurses at all after NICU stay? I have a facebook and thought about making one for my preemie so people can watch her progress like family and friends and maybe nurses? I just feel like they are family and I plan on taking them something to show my sincere gratitude here soon. Any ideas? I know they have reunions for preemies years down the road. I don't know maybe it's too weird but to have these people that basically mothered my baby when I could not I just got attached to some of them and would love for them to watch my baby grow.

I love my kids!

I still keep in contact with her neonatologists via phone and facebook. I also have 90% of her nursing staff on my facebook friends. When we donate to hospitals I make sure I stop into the NICU to say hi and show off Tori.

We also made very good friends with a few families in the NICU. I stay in contact with 3 sets of parents via facebook and Tori's NICU BFF's parents via phone/facebook and we visit with them and let the girls hang out.

This was a very big part of my life. 4 months. These people are my family. They also saved my childs life. I owe them my life.

L&L,
Liz

Mom to Tucker (27 weeker, 05/26/06)

Hi Katie,

Both of Tucker's primary nurses are my facebook friends. Because Tucker was in the NICU for 9 months, his nurses did become like family. I invited both of his primary nurses to his baptism celebration that we had about a month after his discharge.

We send them Christmas cards each year. The facebook page specifically for your child is a great idea. I have a blog away from my share blog, it's a public blog for nurses and other family members who want to stay up to date on Tucker.

We send pictures of Tucker at each birthday, there is a big bulletin board up there where they put pics of graduates. If your daughter ever has appointments near the hospital, you should just drop in. If you have her primary nurse's numbers, text them to see what days they are there.

I just started volunteering in the NICU, and they love hearing about Tucker now that he is older. So the nurses and doctors, even the Respiratory Therapists and OTs and PTs love to hear updates.

I didn't have a NICU baby but I had a loss and have developed a great friendship with two of the nurses that took care of me and delivered my son. I love how something good has come out of my loss, even if it's only a small fraction of what I wanted. I know that my nurses love me and I'm sure yours would love the appreciation you can extend to them. I bet they would love to keep in touch with you!

Come to ShareUnion 2012: It's the BEST weekend ever!!!

Not only do we still keep in touch with my son's primary nurse she is now the god mother to our younger son, and we vacation together. She is like family now and my boys both call her Aunt Katherine. I am also friends with her, and several other people from the NICU, on facebook. It's a great way for them to all stay updated on how Nathan is doing.

Hello All- Thanks for the advice. I went ahead and added a bunch of them on facebook so we can keep in touch. A lot of her nurses I'm not sure of their last names but hopefully these nurses will pass it along. I grew attached to many of them.
