Emergency Birth
Tristen - 04:20am May 31, 2012 ESTIt all started while I was at work. I lost my vision for a few minutes, then my vision was very blurry for several hours and I had a sharp headache. I went to my midwife, thinking it was nothing really. My blood pressure was high. I had to collect my urine for 24 hours, then return. My blood pressure was still high and my bloodwork and urinalysis didn't look good. I was sent to the hospital. They took one look at my numbers and my ultrasound and sent me straight to the university hospital. When I got there, I was expecting bed rest for a while, but that isn't what happened. They told us to make arrangements for our son. He wasn't going to live due to his small size on top of just hitting the 28 week mark. I had preeclampsia and HELP syndrome (which means my liver, kidneys, and platlets were shutting down) and I was getting worse fast. We were devasted. This was our first and we had planned him. Then, it got worse, I had placental abruption (where the placenta detatches from the uterine wall). I started bleeding profusely and went into emergency c-section. Our son was born and his right lung was not working. He was resucitated by the amazing doctors and is still alive today. He had a rough road in the NICU, and is still there, but he made it. He was intubated for a few weeks, then on the high flow nasal cannula for several weeks. He had a bout of NEC (which is an intestinal infection) and has been slow to feed. We are so proud of him already though!
