My strong Griff Griff

jamie_wehr - 03:38am Jun 14, 2012 EST

On May 14 I noticed that I keep "peeing" my pants! I thought, "What the heck!! I never do this!" Then I started having major pains in my stomach. For those that don't know I was diagnosed with Placent Accreda about the beginning of April and I was put on bedrest about a week before May 14. Anyway, I decided by about 9:30, on the 14th, to go to the hospital b/c I knew something wasn't right. I was admitted to the hospital and by 11:30 they determined that my membrane's had "ruptured" which meant my water had a slow leak!

By the next morning my normal OBGYN came to visit me and told me that she felt it would be better if I was transferred to St. Johns, I was at St Francis. She said she felt the specialists at St Francis weren't as equipped to handle my situation like the ones at St John's were. Therefore, I was transferred, by ambulance, to St. John where I was put on strict bedrest minus getting up to use the restroom.

At first I was in a labor and delivery room. Within two days they switched me to a recovery room which is more private and less monitoring. On May 17th I noticed that I had a weird color in my urine so I informed the nurse, who informed my specialist, who informed the nurse to take me back to labor and delivery for constant monitoring. BUMMER!!

On May 18th, I had a visit with the specialist who showed my husband and I exactly how much the placenta had invaded my body. Just so you know, the placent is suppose to be above your uterus and probably about softball size. Mine was under my uterus and was taking over my body! They said it was like a fast growing cancerous tumor minus the cancer! It was not only under my uterus but it had invaded my uterus, growing into it, growing into my bladder and taking over the WHOLE left side of my uterus. The specialist pulled in the OB on duty that day and said to her, "If anything happens today, this is the current position of the uterus. Therefore, you are to cut here (in which she points slightly right of my belly button in an up and down fashion, brutal right!) and not ANYWHERE else. If you cut a few inches over she could bleed out and die!!" WOW...HELLO I'M RIGHT HERE!

That day I had my pain in my lower stomach but I just thought it was b/c anytime Griffin would move he would rub against the placenta and cause pressure. Well the "pressure" never went away. By about 11:15 pm on the 18th I went to the bathroom and noticed I had two very small blood spots in my urine. So I called the nurse b/c she said it was very VERY important to inform them if I saw ANY blood.

She came in and said, "The doctor wants us to catheter you just in case anything else happens!" I'm thinking, "Hmmmm this is all too familiar!" So they cathetered me...totally sucked! Then the pain got to be unbearable. So they gave me some pain meds which helped it go away. Within 10 minutes, 11:30pm, the pain was back. So the nurse said, "I want you to go ahead and put on a gown, just in case!" Enough with this "just in case" crap....tell me what's going on.

The only thing I remember after that is calling my mom and calling my best friend to tell them they had decided to wheel me in and take the baby. By this time it was 11:45pm, Griffin was born May 19th at 12:14 am! I honestly think I blacked out BUT the nurse said I was completely awake and answering questions from my room to the delivery table AND even moved from my bed to the surgery table before they sedated me.

That's when things get "hairy!" To my understanding, my condition is so rare that the OB doctor working on me, and the other's taking care of me, who had been in the field for 18+ years, had NEVER seen a case like mine. As a matter of fact, the OB doctor who did the c-section told the nurses, after the surgery, "Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you all paid close attention tonight b/c in all your years as a nurse you will NEVER see another case like this one!" At least that's what my husband said she said!

My placenta ruptured....DUN DUN DUN!! Meaning, it blew up...I was bleeding out...uncontrollably bleeding!! So, according to Ben and my family and friends who had filled my room waiting on a report, the numerous nurses who were in the operating room helping were running back and forth from the surgery room to the blood bank bringing back those red igloo coolers full of blood. All in all 30 units of blood and $53,000 worth of blood later, I'm still alive with a heart beat!!

I ended up having a c-section, hysterectomy, bladder reconstruction, and two blood transfusions!! A surgery that was suppose to take about 2-3 hours took a total of 6 hours!! I was in the ICU for 2 days and in ICU recovery for 4. They then transferred me to labor and delivery recovery which is where you go after you leave your L & D room in which I was there for a week.

My body wouldn't process food therefore I started throwing up and diarrhea right when they were about to release me which cost me another two days in the hospital until I finally broke down to the doctor crying uncontrollably saying, "I can't be in this hospital anymore please let me go home!" Luckily he was a smart doctor and realized my system was probalby screwed up b/c I hadn't eaten in two weeks and I was somewhat depressed b/c I had been away from my kids so long and my hormones were all screwed!

I have been home now for a week and a half and am slowly getting better. The c-section and hysterectomy were no big deal. The bladder reconstruction has been the worst. I WILL heal though. I just have to take it slow.

I wanted to share my story b/c I wanted to let everyone know that God is AMAZING and does save us in more ways than one. Not only was my life saved but my little Griffin's was saved as well. He is now 3.5 weeks old. Although he is still in the NICU he is so strong and gaining weight, holding his feedings, and he is maintaining his body temperature. He amazes me everyday!!

Welcome to Share Jamie. Congratulations on your son Griffin! Oh my goodness, you have quite the delivery story. I am so glad to read that you are BOTH okay and that you are now home and healing. It must be emotionally difficult to be away from your li'l one, but he's in good hands in the NICU.

Wishing you a speedy recovery and that your little boy comes home to you very soon,

Lindsay
