Duodenum Atresia
Gina012 - 06:01pm Jun 20, 2012 ESTMy son was born with Duodenum Atresia and the doctors didn't know anything was wrong until a day later. (My OB didn't know and hence didn't warn us to expect any abnormalities in delivery. I had excessive amniotic fluid but my doctor never mentioned why this could be.) They had rushed the baby to neonatal care as soon as he was born without informing us of any issues. The next day the pediatrician came to tell us they suspect that the baby may have an abdominal obstruction. He was rushed to Sick Kids Hospital for further investigation and it was confirmed that he had a duodenum atresia. They performed surgery on him and he stayed in the hospital for a month. Now he is 10 months old and growing slowly. He is under weight and is in the 5th percentile for growth and weight. He doesn't like to eat much and still spits up a lot. It's a slow process but we hope he will be ok. The doctors cannot figure out why he is not putting on weight, they tried putting him on a high calorie diet. He is a happy baby with a small appetite and we love him. It's just stressful not having answers but I am taking it one day at a time.
