GAGE LOGAN CAMERON

May 09, 2008 10:57am (EST)

Gage was born 5/25/2006 at Menorah Medical Center, at just 31 weeks. A three pound baby brought into the world via emergency cesarean section after I was diagnosed with severe HELLP Syndrome. HELLP Syndrome is a rare disorder that typically affects first time mothers and more commonly following the delivery of the child. My HELLP Syndrome presented on its own...I never went into labor.

The only way to spare the life of the Mother is to deliver the baby b/c HELLP syndrome is typically the mother rejecting the unborn child within her. So to hault the rejection process, the baby has to be removed.

Gage spent over three weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. He did very well...although at the time it was a scary and unnatural probably moreso for myself. Looking at your child through a little "submarine" with two port holes that you might be able to put your hand into to reach your child isn't the way anyone invisions their first moments with their child.

Gage has in total spent approximately four months of his life in the hospital including NICU stay but also for various infections that can be attributed to prematurity and his known weakened immune system. He is still receiving treatment and will undergo surgery this month...just two days after we walk for March for Babies.

We would like to ask for your support to the March of Dimes for a couple of reasons. Number one: The children. My wish is for every parent to be able to love, nurture and watch their children grow...unfortunately that is not the case with all premature babies. Second: The March of Dimes sponsors research and hopefully they will be able to one day identify why some women develop HELLP Syndrome and will be able to find a source of prevention so that it is no longer a threat to mothers and their unborn children.

Please take a step and sponsor us in our walk...I am so thankful that Gage is here to walk with me.
