ROCCO'S ONE WEEK BIRTHDAY
|
 |

Jul 01, 2009 06:12pm (EST)
It has been an eventful 7 days for all of us. Rocco was born Wednesday, June 24th, 2009 at 1:18pm. That evening he was transported to the NICU here in Long Beach because he had a pneumothorax (air in his lungs). We were happy that a great NICU was right down the road but it was difficult because Rocco couldn't be in the same hospital with mom. So, Mike went with Rocco to the new hospital and Tara worked on a speedy recovery so she could go visit RJ. Tara was released Friday morning and was thrilled to get to see her little man.
The pneumothorax resolved and then we were hit with the news that he was now battling with Persistant Pulmonary Hypertension. That meant that his body was not able to process "our air" correctly. Babies often have this problem adjusting to the air outside the mother we were told.
Saturday, June 27th was a tough day because he was placed on nitric oxide and an oscillating breathing machine. In addition, he received a blood transfusion. If these treatments didn't work our next step would be to move him to another NICU in the area for a more advanced treatment.
Now I am happy to report that Rocco did respond to the nitric oxide. They are currentlyy starting to wean him off of the nitric oxide and the special ventillator. It will be a slow process as he also has to come out of sedation and be removed from the other medications he has been on. But we are thrilled that we are on the road to recovery. Please keep up the good thoughts and prayers for our little Roc Star!
