Hi, everybody!!

I am Michele Reeves, Mom to Amanda Reeves the 2004 National Ambassador. I have had the awesome opportunity to meet many local ambassador families this year! How many of you have been an ambassador family OR would like to be an ambassador family? It has been an awesome experience and is our pleasure to give back to an organization that helped to save our daughter's life!!

Hugs!

Re: 2003 Austin Texas ambassador family here...

Hey, Michelle!

I live in Simpsonville, so when you get "home" let me know and maybe we can get together!!

The school has been VERY supportive. Also, when we go on our trips, the chapters have been very good about planning for us to do things that are educational...Children's museum in Providence, RI...Betsy Ross' house in Philly...Polar Beverages in MA...lots of different things! It has been an amazing experience in more than one way!! Also, Amanda's school got involved by doing a map of where Amanda was traveling! They would put a pin and talk about the area that Amanda was visiting that day!

It is a win-win situation for the child and the school!! Good luck and let me know when you will be in SC!

Hugs!
Michele

    Ambassador Family

Hello I am Meredith Baker. My family and I divised a team of ten walkers for this past year for the March of Dimes in honor of my twin sons Matthew and Jonathan. They were born at 21 and 22 weeks. They survived only briefly, but are with us in spirit. I was given the Ambassador Family yellow bandana at the walk and would continue to be a part of March of Dimes. This is a wonderful organization and strongly support all the research and dedication everyone provides.

    Hello Everyone!

My daughter Abby was born at 29 wks, weighed 3 lb 1 oz. We've just been named as the Ambassador Family for the Green River area in Western Kentucky! We just attended an Annual Scholarship Benefit Evening, where we were named as the Ambassador Family. The night had a 70's theme & the 3 of us dressed the part, my husband even sported an afro! We had so much fun & are looking so forward to telling others our story! I believe being able to put a face with a cause means SO much & if our story can touch and help just one person then I feel like we've really done something!

    Hugs!

2004 Porter County, Indiana Ambassador Family

We have been involved with the MOD for the past six years. The first four we only raised money and walked with my employer, not knowing we would ever need the services of a NICU. The last two years we have walked for my premature twins (27 weekers) and were the ambassador family for our county last year. (We were also the top walkers for our county thanks to their Grandma's great sales pitch to get donations in their names.) For anyone wanting to do this-DO IT! It is a great thrill to see everyone turn out at the events and there are so many parents of premature babies that walk in the WalkAmerica program.

    Hi Michele

Benjamin and I would love to be an Ambassador Family! We live in Stroudsburg, PA. Could you tell me some of the responsibilities of an Ambassador Family? Our wonderful Social Worker back in Mt. Sinai Hospital where Benjamin was born on 12/24/99, has always kept in touch with us and we have discussed this issue. She now works with the March of Dimes. Her name is LIZA COOPER and we would not have made it through that whole NICU experience without her commitment and wonderful support.

I also wanted to say THANK YOU for your commitment to such a wonderful cause. Five years ago, we did not have a site like this. I can remember feeling so alone and no one understanding what I was going through, except the Moms I had the pleasure of meeting in the NICU! So, it gives me great pleasure to read these magnificent stories and acknowledge their strength and courage!

I received your LIVE messages.....I'm not sure if you are receiving my responses back!!!

    Have a great Holiday!

We, as NICU grads parents, are so BLESSED to have her on our side!! For those of you that don't know Liza, she is the manager of NICU Family Support at the MOD's National Office. Liza has made a difference to many, many NICU families!!

    Re: For Kyla B.

    Hi Kyla,

Well Kyla, I think that is a pretty good topic for an essay and I am totally impressed that you are 11 years old and have such an interest.

First, the March of Dimes has been so committed to doing research on premature births, the family unit and the NICU, plus tons of other related topics that center all on the same thing...prematurity. I think one of the important things about premature babies is that every situation is different, yet all parents go through similar ups and downs in the NICU. Every life is important, and with the continued help and support of the March of Dimes, we will be able to save more babies. I hope you are gathering all your notes from the SHARE Community there are tons of interesting and helpful information here!!! Let me know how your paper goes....maybe you can share it with all of us here!!! I think that would be a wonderful contribution from such a smart 11 year old!!!

Kyla, let me know if you need more help or if you have more questions....and I'll try my best to help you out! My son was born at 34 weeks on 12/24/99 with NEC (bowel and intestinal infection) and he weighed 5 lbs. 3.5 oz, and was 19 inches long. So you see not all babies are 1 and 2 or 3 lbs.

Good Luck and let me know how it goes!!

We will be moving to TX in May, but when we get there and settled, I plan to find out how I can volunteer with the local MOD. I would love for us to be an Ambassador family when Micah is a little older. Maybe this is a silly question, but I was wondering what the qualifications of being an Ambassador family are? Micah was 32 weeks and is now very healthy. The Ambassador stories I recall reading are of babies born much earlier than that. We had many trials with Micah's prematurity, but I always feel like we were "lucky" that I was as far along as I was when Micah was born, and we were!!! I don't know how to word this...sometimes I feel like I shouldn't have so many emotions about Micah's prematurity since he's doing so well and wasn't as early as other babies. But I do, and to me that is good because it drives me to help in any way that I can. I can't wait for Walk America!!!!

    My 3 boybarians are 4, 5 and 7.

MOD Offices vary place to place

I'd say try again, but I also know the frustration of being neglected from the local office.

We were an ambassador family for the Quad Cities IA/IL Mississippi Valley area. I was always informed of meetings, kick offs, chefs, speaking events, etc. Sometimes, they only needed me to make a few phone calls, othertimes speeches, TV appearances, newspaper stories. I was involved as much as I could be with a preemie who couldn't leave home. I loved the girls and other volunteers... we were more than just involved as volunteers, we were buddies and called eachother just to chat.

My husband then got a new job and we moved across the state near Des Moines. I called to tell them I was coming. My local chapter called and told them I was coming. I called again. I called again. And again. I still have no idea what's going on locally. I've lived here now for almost 8 months. I wasn't told about Walk Kick-off or any events.

They had a lobby day here at the state capitol in Des Moines about some bills important to MOD's causes. I got a call from my friends back in the Quad Cities saying "I can't believe you weren't there! We missed you! We thought for sure you'd go since it's so close to you!" I didn't even know it was going on.

I did stuff some envelopes for them containing Walk America registration forms. Strangely enough, though, I wasn't on the mailing list and still haven't gotten a form. Doesn't matter, I registered online. I didn't even know when Walk America was in Des Moines until the girls from the Quad Cities chapter told me.

Seems strange to go from being the Ambassador family and top walker for our former chapter to having no connection or contact from the new office. Maybe they're too busy???

I am still fundraising online. However, we are walking at the Walk in our former hometown (3 hours away) because they are the only ones keeping us informed. I've done everything but throw myself at this office. Noone should have to work that hard to volunteer. Now it's just awkward.

I just reread my post and realized how glum it sounds!

I don't want to discourage anyone from contacting their local office and getting involved. Being an ambassador family made me feel like Logan's prematurity had purpose. I felt like so much had been given TO our family from saving graces like Surfactant and nitric oxide. Giving speeches, talking with the newspaper, making the MOD commercial and trying to get people to donate was so rewarding for our family. I really felt like it was the only opportunity I had to give back to an organization who has done SO MUCH for my son and for so many other precious preemie lives.

Fundraising, doing Walk America, even stuffing envelopes is so gratifying for us because it empowers us to find meaning in Logan's story.

    Re: Add on....

Hi there, your new pal Karri here!!

So your saying just keep calling, contacting them etc?? I've contacted the local coordinator several times and have been offered two speaking occasions, but still haven't been given specifics on those things.

I'm trying to walk that fine line between being assertive and being just plain pushy!! You know what I mean? I agree with you, I'm sure they are busy, but I guess I'm just not sure how to read it. Is it that I'm just not what they are looking for, or are they wanting me to keep calling?!?!

Well now that sounds completely confusing. If you can make any sense out of that I'll be impressed!!

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

Karri, you are echoing my thoughts exactly!

It's such a great cause, which is why I want to keep trying. On one hand... the first office I called (Quad Cities IA/IL chapter) I was warmly received, quickly invited to get involved, kept informed of every occasion. We were soon doing commercials, speeches, interviews, making phone calls, etc. I felt connected to the center of the hub. I got emails when to call the senator, etc. The girls were kind, warm and smart!

Since I've moved I'm in the same boat as you.... how many times does a girl have to call? I don't want to seem pushy. I just want to help. But c'mon, it's been 8 months. I know nothing. Noone calls me back. Here I am, the mom of a preemie, a former ambassador family mom, a big fundraiser, I'm throwing myself at them! They don't seem to want the bait.

I got an idea Karri! Let's form our own chapter. Tee hee. Reminds me of when I was little and my brother wouldn't let me join his club, so I made my own. Only then I was, like 7.

Okay so what shall we call this wonderful club??? What about....Club SuperMoms....or...."MOPs"..Moms of Preemies....any suggestions.

I just want to help, and share our story. I have been contacted by our NICU to help start a support group for parents currently in or have been in the NICU. That has me jumping. I will jump up in bed, and Kirk will ask what the problem is, I'll say I just thought of something I need to add to my list.....I have a running list of items to talk with the committee about when we meet. Ideas I have, things I would like to see done. I just want to channel this energy and passion I have. I feel like I've found my new calling in life, or should I say next calling, after being a teacher and then Mom.
This site has helped tremendously with some of this passion. I've healed in ways I didn't think I still needed to do. I've made friends with people I feel like I've known my entire life, because of this amazing experience that affected all of us at such a deep level. It really changes who you are.

Okay what was it you were saying about rambling!! I'll talk to you soon!!
Take care and hug the boys for me!!

    Ambassador Families

Well ever since they merged the Northern and Southern California MOD chapters together, and then the Communications Coordinator from the Southern Chapter has left nobody knows what is going on.

I haven't heard anything from anyone since last year at Walk America.I had to call my local chapter office closest to me,and ask about them mailing me some Walk America sponsorship form for my friends and family that I don't need to email.

The woman told me that they would need my help where they will be setting up at Griffith Park to help other parents.I told her that I would definitely be interested.I don't know if they will have us talk on stage,we will see as the time gets nearer. Our walk is on April 30th.

Last year Eleanor~Rose rode on an old fire engine, and she was very excited to ride on it.I don't know what will happen this year as the people at the chapters don't even know too well what is going on.LOL!

Anyways,I hope that once everyone is set with this big change that has been made, everything will work out fine, and I hope that I can do as much to help for the MOD as possible.

    Wow Shannon!!

Thats awesome!! I would LOVE any information you can provide!!

I guess if you wouldn't mind could you send me all the information you have. I know thats very broad, but I'll take all the help I can get. I want this to be completely helpful to the parents.
Do you meet monthly, weekly? If you do, do you, have speakers, or just allow the parents to network, share stories, vent, cry!! My initial thoughts are to do a little of both. I'm thinking speakers can provide valuable information on EI, specialists,. While current parents can benefit also from simply talking about their baby and their day! I'm hoping to compile a list of veteran parents to be available to speak with and offer support to current parents. Maybe establish a mentor program of sorts.

Okay so I could go on with this for a loooonnnng time. I will try to contain myself for now. Thanks for all the help you can offer. My email is....klfriedenberger@ameritech.net

Re: Can I get more information?

    Hey, Proud Papa!!

How is Elliot doing? Did she have a happy birthday?

As far as details of the ambassadorship program, I am going to assume you are talking about being a local ambassador. It really is just a willingness to tell your story. The chapter may have you attend company kick off events to get the troops motivated, they may use your story on printed material, you may attend the local WalkAmerica kick off and tell your story, they may use you to tell your story to the media. I guess for the most part it is just a willingness to tell your story and help out where needed.

Hopefully we will have a more consistent local ambassador program, complete with training! Right now it is up to each individual chapter as to how their ambassadors are used.

I can tell you that it is an honor and a privilege and something that we really enjoyed! If I can help further, please let me know or contact your local chapter!!

    Hugs!

    Volunteer/Family teams/Ambassador Families

Our family decided last year that we wanted to get involved and show our support. Last year our walk was in the fall and we were the local ambassador family for our area and told our story in the local paper. However, this year our walk has been switched to the spring and I am working as a walk representative/volunteer to organize our walk and spread the word that prematurity is a crisis throughout the whole U.S., not just in urban areas but small rural ones like I live too... I am learning that the local chapters have a lot of work that needs to be done year round not just at walk time. (My local chapter is 145 miles from my house - 3 hours away - but I am trying to do my best to help them as much as I am able because I believe that I can help others like us and want to do my part in the March of Dimes Fight!!) Stop in and volunteer to be on their family team committee, help spread the word to other families in your area. Help them do whatever they need to spread the mission. Keep trying to call them but if possible try to stop in and volunteer. Show your support, the smallest amount of time can really help alot!!! Take care and Good Wishes to all fellow PoPs!! Lisa

    My 3 boybarians are 4, 5 and 7.

    Our role as Ambassador Family

Our role was mostly to put a face on prematurity; to show it can happen to anyone. My main message in my speeches was that preterm labor can happen to any women of any race, religion and socio-economic background. Prematurity does not discriminate.

I gave a speech at kick-off for Walk America. I had a TV crew come to my house for the news segment on premature birth ( I disinfected them at the door... poor guys!). We had another TV crew there to film a commercial for Walk America. I did a newpaper interview over the phone, a photographer came to our house to shoot some photos of Logan. We did an appearance on a live local talk show to promote Walk and tell Logan's story. My family did the live broadcast the morning of Walk America and my husband gave a little blurb about why we got involved. I gave a speech a few moments before walk. We did fundraising and asked for donations. That was mostly our role. We have also made phone calls, stuffed envelopes, and just "made a presence" to make ourselves available for questions.

What do you need to become an ambassador family? Hope you're not shy! LOL! Mostly the only thing you need to be able to do is articulate how prematurity affected your family. The willingness to share your story is how the March of Dimes spreads its purpose on a PERSONAL level. Everyone can read statistics. To see an actual preemie baby says more than any stat sheet ever could.

Mommy to a teenager! Wow, where did the time go?

    I'm Feeling Disheartened.

My walk is this Saturday on the 30.It's a double duty day for me and Eleanor~Rose as I have the walk in the morning and then in the late afternoon our dance group is having their first performance in a long line of Cinco De Mayo performances for the upcoming week.

I am a little distressed though.I have called my California chapter to see what they were going to do for this years Walk America, last year I spoke on stage with another mom,and we kicked off the walk,it was wonderful.

Eleanor~Rose is a Local Ambassador, but they have not called us once for anything this past year,so I called them to see what was happening.Well I was told that they received complaints from last year that too many people spoke last year.It was mostly from the companies who donate their checks,as there were just two Ambassadors.

So they told me that this year they are only having one main speaker, the National Director of Community Affairs&Sponsorship, and then they told me that there was going to be a space for Ambassador families and that we could go there and they would let me know about it.

I still have not heard back from them, and when I did call back to ask,no one knew what was going on as of yet,and that they would call me back, they still have not returned my call, and I am just so frustrated.I feel like they have no use for me,and I know that it's wrong for me to feel like this, but I can't help it.

I feel as if I am reaching out to them, and they just keep turning away from me.I know that it's going to be tough walking in the morning, and then dancing in the afternoon, but this cause is just so important to me.Oh well, sorry for the ranting vent,I just needed to get this out of my system, nbecause I just feel so down right now.

Hope that everyones elses walks in the near future all go well for you.

We are the ambassador family in Stephenson County (Freeport), Illinois this year. Our son Tyler was born October 16th, 2003 weighing 2lbs 10oz, 15" long. He was in the NICU 78 days and is now a happy, healthy 1 1/2 yr old. We've had a lot of fun so far with the ambassador program. Now I am preparing for my speech at walk (eek!) May 14th. 1. Recap your child's story quickly. Weeks gestation, weight, how long in the NICU and how he is doing now.
    2. Thank you, thank you, thank you..."because of people like you giving of their time and money, my son Tyler is here with us today!" and/or "On behalf of families of premature babies everywhere, let me say Thank You!!"

I am so sorry you are feeling disheartened! I also want to say THANK YOU for your commitment and willingness to participate! A chapter is under a lot of pressure to please a lot of people the day of Walk. There are so many people to thank, acknowledge, etc...that time gets away. The atmosphere is a party one, as you know, and I sometimes wonder how much people are really listening anyway! BUT The most important thing is that they are there and willing to give of their time and energy to help us save babies!!!

Don't give up, you keep making yourself available! Who knows, maybe your story being told to those around you as you walk with generate a lot of excitement and touch somebody very deeply!!! Call the chapter again, hopefully you will get the answers you are looking for! Join the other families and enjoy the celebration!!!!

Sounds like you are a very dedicated mom going to the Dance and the Walk in one day!!! The March of Dimes thanks you for every moment of time you devote to the cause of prematurity. Thank you for all you do and when things are calmer, I am sure you can reconnect with the chaper!

Thank you for your kind words of encouragement.I did call the chapter today, and they did inform me that there was a station for the Ambassador Familes to go to.I guess they will tell us what we will do while we are there.

I feel silly getting all riled up like this. From my understanding, they have now merged the Northern and Southern California Chapters together as one whole,so things are so crazy they couldn't get the answers.

I did apologize to them for calling and bothering them so much, but they were very sweet to me.I just told them that I wanted to be more of a part of the walk, then just walking.

My first year walking,I was alone,I didn't even take my daughter, because of her health issues, and then I wasn't sure about the course of the walk,as I hd never been to that park before, when I crossed that finish line I was so full of emotion that I had to keep walking to find a place by myself,or I would have broken down right there at the finish line.

Last year Eleanor~Rose was an Ambassador, and we were right on stage with the Actress from The Series show "Soul Food" Vanessa Williams,it was just an awesome feeling to bein by myself one time, then having all these people looking at me while I spoke of my daughter's early birth, and struggle to live.

We didn't stay long after she rode on the fire truck,as my mom was sick,I then got sick the following week,as I got Bronchitis.LOL!I didn't dance that year. This year I am going with my father, and hope to stay for a good while, but then I must get home to get ready for our performance.

I love my dancing, and MOD,I cringed when I heard that our first performance was to be April 30,but all I said was "Well the walk is in the morning,so I can do both" I don't know how I'll fell after, but I know it will be fantastic.

Thank you again for all your kind words, and support it really meant the world to me.Take care, and have a beautiful weekend.

    Deborah&Eleanor~Rose.

Mommy to a teenager! Wow, where did the time go?

Well Eleanor~Rose and I had our walk yesterday, and all I can say is that it was just AWESOME!

We got there early I registered, then went to the VIP tent to see where they were having the Ambassador Family station. They were very nice, and they told me that the tent was to hang out at after we finished our walk.

I thought that Eleanor~rose would stay with my dad while I walked. She then told me that she wanted to go with me,and that she wanted me to puch her in the stroller.I didn't want her to get too tired by walking as we had a dance performance that later afternoon,so I pushed her in the stroller.

I thought the first time I walked was tough, well pushing a stroller was hard.LOL!When we got to the last mile marker, she then informed that she wanted to walk a bit,so I let her,and then told her if she got too tired to let me know and I'd put her back in the stroller.

She got a tired once, then wanted out again.I told her that as we got close to the finish line I would let her know then take her out so she could walk withme and cross the finish line.

As we neared the line,I took her out and we held hands and crossed the finishline. Many MOD volunteers were there to give us high fives, including one of the big bosses from the City of L.A.(he was waiting to high five all his employees who walked) seeing my daughter walking and high fiving all these people got me extremely emotional, that I just picked her up after, hugged her,and told her that I loved her,and was so proud of her,and I just broke down completely, and started to cry right there.

After I was asked to help judge the T-shirt contest, and help pick what we felt were the the three best T-Shirt designs. We chose the City of L..A. for the Best Creative, the DMV for Best Theme, and then we all chose K-Mart for the Best Overall.they announced the winners between one of the bands that was playing there.we had a wonderful time, but had to leave because I still had many things to get ready for our performance.

My onnly regret was that I had left my camera in my purse, and it was underneath the stroller, and I wasn't able to have my dad take a picture of us with it,but the memorise of this walk with my daughter by my side and the feelings that overwhelemed at tat very moment of crossing the finish line will remain with me forever.

How I was able to dance later that afternoon was beyond me,but I did it,and I am not even sore or achey at all,but still very emotiona,I guess that I will be this way forever nore,it's just a part of who I am.I mean I was an emotionally sensitive person to begin with, but my daughter early birth has made me even more than before.

Anyways we have another dance performance today, and then the group has three performances for the 5th of May,but I can only make the evening show as the first two are in the morning, and I can't afford to miss work. Then the group will dance at the school where I work on Friday(I am the cook in the cafeteria) so we have a busy week coming up.

Thank you all for your help and support,it truly means alot to me knowing that you all care about my feelings, and I hope that everyone else's walks are as joyous and wonderful as mines was.Have a wonderful rest of the weekend, and Happy Cinco De Mayo!

    Ambassador Family

We are the Ambassador Family for the State of Alabama for 2005. It is so exciting and rewarding to share our story and the mission of the March of Dimes. We are so forunate to have family and friends to assist us in all our fundraising endeavors and in the past five months we have raised over $4000.00.

We have learned to continue our fundraising efforts throughout the year. Last year we had a Progressive Dinner, Breakfast with Santa, Letter writing campaign, and sold handmade crafts for various holiday seasons. We also made a Mommy and Me craft book for the 2004 walk which raised more than 2500.00.

Remember that you do not have the title of March of Dimes Ambassador to be an ambassador for the mission. Simply share your story with someone and let them know how they can help to save other tiny babies.

Deborah - I can just see you guys holding hands across the finish line! I too forgot the picture of me and my son this year . It was windy and cold so I had him all bundled up at the start and thought I would get a picture of us at the end and just forgot! I was so upset with myself but I'll journal about it in my scrapbook and that way he can remember it too. Best to you and Eleanor Rose!

    Hey there!
Sorry it took me so long to reply... I don't check this board as often as I'd like (work tends to get in the way of it a little- lol). Walk is next weekend and I still have no clue how long I have to talk. Hopefully I'll know by this afternoon. My speech at the hospital was about 5 minutes so maybe I'll plan on the same. I'm sure it'll be fine. I'm planning on taking a "diaper" from the hospital to show a little scale. I'm getting excited. Anyhow, we were not at Swedes- we were at Rockford Memorial for my delivery and Tyler's entire stay. We could have transferred out the last month of his stay but opted not to. We had a great experience there and have made some wonderful friendships with some of the families and nurses. Do you live in Rockford now? Nice to meet you. Hope you have a great day!

    Be an ambassador family!!!

Well everyone walk is over for another year. Now is the time to become an ambassador family for the March of Dimes. It is truly the most rewarding experience. I have loved being a part of the ambassador family program by sharing our story with people. I reallly feel we have educated people on the problems of preemies. If you would like to join the many families who have gone before you contact your local chapter or email me at tevert@frontiernet.net. I live in Rochester NY and am the coordinator. An ambassador family does many things you can speak to groups do media events offer pictures and your story in written form. There are many ways you can help spread the mission!!! Thanks for ;your time.

    Just wondering...

    Hi all!

I was talking to a "friend" the other day, and mentioned that we would like to be considered for a local ambassador family one year, and my friend asked if MOD would really want to make a child with disabilities an ambassador because it might make them look bad.

I told her I didn't think it mattered because MOD doesn't discriminate and they know all preemies are special blessings whether they have disabilities or not.

    I am right about that...right?

    Just double checking,

    Page,

You are absolutely right! Unfortunately, many babies who are born prematurely have disabilities, sometimes very serious disabilities. This is part of the preemie package.

Our children are incredible miracles any way you look at at...but some are deaf, some are blind, some have cp, some have mr, and the list goes on and on....The March of Dimes mission is to find the answers to keep babies from being born early...and then fund research for when they are in the NICU....or for the very sick full term babies who need special care too.

If one thinks that MOD would deny a child with a disability the chance to be one of the many beautiful faces that represent MOD...then maybe that person should become more studied in what the MOD does. That is easy too....there is gobs of information just waiting for someone, like your friend, to get their hands on!

    Hugs,

    Melissa Middleton

    Page,

You're right... looking at a few of the ambassadors from my state we have representatives who have CP, Down's Syndrome and a cranofacial abnormality. They are beautiful kids with very dedicated parents to the MOD and the cause. They were chosen because of their willingness to help and their ability to tell their story... not because of their child's (dis)abilities.

Your "friend" needs to visit marchofdimes.com! I think you can find some of the families online... by clicking on your state or entering your zip code. Anyone remember the details of how?

Re-reading my response to your post...I would also like to say....though my child is a preemie..the March of Dimes represents a wide variety of babies...who also are full term. What an awesome organization. They leave no child out of the scope of their support and funding for research!

    Ambassador Families

Actually, thinking about it...I guess I should post more information. We have ambassadors involved at a variety of levels. Some families may prefer a range of activity that is close to home, such as speaking at WalkAmerica kick-offs, etc. Obviously the broadest range of activities is taken on by our National Ambassador Family each year (Michele's family held this role in 2004). There are, however, many levels in between including Division and Chapter Ambassadors. For someone who wants to be involved, there is probably an opportunity that will make a good fit. Hope this helps!

    Ambassador Questions Answered:

I've been asked to answer these questions as Michele is unavailable for the time being (keeping her family in my thoughts and prayers).

Jalen's Mom: First of all Congratulations on being asked. It's a huge honor and a huge responsibility, however... a majority of chapters are very family friendly and understand our individual needs. To answer your question:

I'm worried about the time committment, and how much I can actually do......any suggestions? The time committment depends on the events, I would actually recommend asking for an agenda ahead of time. For us, we had a radio interview, several Walk Committee meetings, a Leadership Dinner where we shared our story and of course the Walk Kick off and Walk itself.

I would also find out if you would be the sole ambassador for the walk, or if another family team would also be doing this.

I hope this is helpful, if you have any more questions please feel free to email me!

Tara -- My best advice would be to contact your local chapter, and if you need help doing this email me or you could go to the Marchofdimes.com and type in your area code (in the top right hand corner) to find your local chapter. Start there. Being an ambassador family is a huge honor and there is nothing better than using your child's story to help other children and families.

Congratulations on the birth of your babies and I am very excited to hear more about them as they grow!

Again, if you have any more questions please feel free to email me.

    Best of Luck!!!

    Hi Sheila!

First thing I would do is contact your local office for the March of Dimes and let them know you are interested in the ambassadorship. Second, you can be an ambassador family without even having the "name" just by sharing your story and the March of Dimes Mission. It's easy... and I believe that is what a "Mission Family" does. If you don't mind sharing your story over and over again in front of lots of people, than the ambassador program is for you, it's a great way to get the word out there and get your voice heard!

Good luck with this and if you have any problems with your local chapter, let us know!!!

    New Ambassedor Family

We are a 2006 Ambassador Family from Iowa. 119 days in the NICU after delivering triplets at 25 and 26 weeks, we brought one baby home. Our other two sons died within the first two weeks. Our son is now 3 and quite an amazing miracle, but medical or religious standards. We help out in our region with TV commercials, radio spots and newspaper stories. We speak at events and will be leading our local WalkAmerica group in May. I find it very rewarding and also informative for many people who had no idea what preemies can go through or how early they can arrive.

I would like to know how to apply for the National Ambassador Family, any information you have would be helpful. I know our son is a little young so we might have to wait a few years.

    Re: New Ambassedor Family

    Hi Shonda,

I talked with Suzanne (in your chapter) about you yesterday. The chapter needs to submit you and I believe they plan to. That said, we both think you would be a great choice....but probably in a couple of years. Your son is a little too young. National Ambassador children need to be able to get up on stage before huge crowds and thank everyone for coming, etc.

If you want to talk about it further, feel free to email me.

    Re: New Ambassedor Family

    Hey, Shonda!

Let me first say, THANK YOU for being willing to share your story with us, the media and all of Iowa. It is very rewarding and you are giving people a lot of useful information that will change the way they look at prematurity forever. It is stories like yours that educate...and then, quite naturally, the money will follow!

James did answer very appropriately...the chapter will submit your name and then all applications will be reviewed by the National office. This happens one time a year. You are wise to wait until your son is a little older. It would be pretty difficult to do the amount of traveling necessary with a little one. I spent many an hour entertaining Amanda in airports and airplanes, she was 5 at the time. Also, as National Ambassador you will make memories that will last a lifetime. Amanda doesn't remember a lot of what we did, maybe we will have to do it again! HAHA!

In the mean time, while waiting for your little one to grow...keep doing what you have been doing. Learn as much as you can about MOD, as much as you can about the mission. When the time is right your chapter will submit your information and who knows what your future will hold!!

Thanks again, Shonda for all you do!
    Hugs!
    Michele
