New Jersey is just too far!

It does make it hard to spend as much time as I'd like to with the two out there. And as yet, neither of them can really talk on the phone. But that day will come! Meanwhile, I just go out as I can! And summer is a great time to go ! The kids live just 1/2 mile from the ocean, so it's wonderful!

And yes, we ARE going to get together to share the experiences of being grandma to these precious little miracles! Let's see.... PoP is parent of preemie..........I guess we could call ourselves GmOp's!

Re: New Jersey is just too far!

Yes I am sure it would be too far!!!!!!

Your trips there sound wonderful I am sure you look forward to each of them...and how awesome to be so close to the ocean..as we know all too well the only thing here in Indiana that we are close to is Corn, and Road Construction....

They will learn very quickly as all children do to operate that phone thing as Jacob calls it... He calls me a few times through the day at work just to chat and keep me up to date on the toons of the day....I remember the first time he called me.... they had been trying to teach him which button to push to call me but we didn't think he had grasp that concept yet.... But much to everyone surprise he did understand all too well, and when Mommy wasn't looking called me.... All I could hear on the other end was heavy breathing... what he hadn't learned was the concept of speaking into it....I didn't want to hang up and could not talk him into getting Mommy.. So I finally called her cell phone from mine and luckily she had it on. We had been on the line together for a very long time... I could hear her talk to him, and hear him answer her and she had no idea that he had the phone or me on the line...(LOL) But we no longer have that problem. He is now a master at that phone thing ..... and yours will be too very soon soon.... it doesn't take them long....

And I like that name you have for us there... (LOL) we do need to refer to ourselves as something huh!!!!!!

Have a great evening......I look forward to seeing you soon....

We have spent many months at Riley's. What an awesome hospital and staff! All three of our children routinely go there for clinic checks and all three have had their surgeries there. I wouldn't go anywhere else. My 27 weekers were 2 lbs. 20z. each, but both went down to 1 lb. 14 oz. a few days after birth.

    Re: Valparaiso

    Peggy:

You are correct Riley is an AWESOME hospital. Great staff and excellent care.... Jacob was in Module 3 of their NICU and had wonderful nurses that to date my son and daughter-in-law still maintain a relationship with a few from there...

My experience with Riley dates back many years.. long before the existence of their NICU both of my Sons although being term babies were Riley patients at different times throughout their childhood years... My eldest son had many visits and in-patient stays leading up to his FIRST open heart surgery at Riley when he was 5 years old and continued to be a patient with routine visits to their cardiology department as well as several in patient stays annually until he was a junior in high school. Riley always referred to his in patient stays as back for some fine tuning...

My youngest son (Jacob's Daddy) had a tumor removed from his head when he was 11 months old at Riley... The only thing for us (Grandparents) that lessened the fear with Jacob was we were in such a familiar place...

My grandson Jacob's birth weight was 1 pound 14 ounces and his lowest weight was 1 pound 3 ounces that is when he was put back on the vent because they said he was burning too many calories and needed a break....

I hope all is well with you and your babies and maybe as much time as we spend at Riley that our paths will cross.. .. It has been very nice chatting with you and I hope to see you around share..

    God Bless!!!!

I am working with our local March of Dimes office on some support and advocacy projects and I want them to reach as many people as possible. It's great to see some folks from Indiana here. Is there anyone from the Southwest area?

    Indy here

I'm on the Southwest side of Indy, close to the airport. My daughter Riley was born at University Hospital in Indy, then transferred to Riley. We were in Mod 2, then moved to Mod 5 for the last 6 weeks. If anyone is attending the vigil at the Canal, we need to pick a spot to meet. I don't know of my responsibilities yet for the vigil but I'm sure we can get together. It may be better to plan a quick meet and greet after? We could meet somewhere for coffee or cocoa? Hopefully it won't be too cold. Melody, are you still planning on going to the conference this weekend?

    ROLL CALL MOVED INDOORS!!!

Okay, I hope everyone gets this in time. The Indianapolis Prematurity Roll Call has been moved. We will conduct the Roll Call INDOORS at the Emmis Communications Building on the west side of the Circle downtown. We will begin the Roll Call at 6pm in the lobby on the First floor and if weather permits, finish the Roll Call by circling the monument. The Emmis building is where WIBC and 97.1 are aired. The best place to park is probably in the Circle Center mall. As far as I could tell, there aren’t any events downtown so it should only be $1.50 to park. I can't wait to meet you guys if you can come. I'll be there early so try to find me. My cell number is 850-7702 and I'll be reading a tribute at the very beginning. Please pray for me to have strength and not cry (too hard) during the poem.

I just wanted to touch base as I'd still love to help out with NICU support in anyway possible - we haven't been able to make it out yet because my husband started working Wednesday nights and we only have 1 vehicle... Hoosier born and raised!

We live in Fishers, IN (northeast of Indianapolis). I was born in Crown Pointe, IN and raised in Hobart, IN (for you Valpo and Schererville folks!). Our daughter, Katelyn, was a 32 weeker. Weighed 3 lbs. She is now 16 months old. Unfortunately, she was infected with CMV while in utero and that was the reason she was in the NICU so long (4 1/2 months). We were actually at the new Riley satellite in Clarian North Hospital (in Carmel). We have traveled to Riley's downtown initially after Katelyn was discharged to home to see an Infectious Disease Doc, a doc at the Craniofacial Clinic, and removal of Katie's G tube, but most of our lab draws and doc visits have been at Clarian North. Katelyn is doing well currently. She is still behind developmentally, but hopefully she will catch up. Glad to see so many active Hoosiers on here!
    Love, Kelly

    Michigan City

Hello everyone, we took our son to University of Chicago and if I would have known then what I know now I would have taken him to Riley's. My son was born at 27 weeks in 2001 and he passed away when he was 8 weeks old. I decided on UofC because it was closer and I usually heard good things. I'm still so angry with them to this day, I wouldn't even take my dog there if I could. But I loved the Ronald McDonald House they were great.

Welcome, Robin! I am so sorry that you lost your precious son at 8 weeks old. That must have been so incredibly hard. Although I was raised up in the same area that you are from, I have actually have never been to U of C. I must agree Riley's, for the most part, was great. We were very fortunate to live so close to such a fine NICU/ PICU/ Peds services. Glad you found your way to SHARE!! Love, Kelly
