OKLAHOMA
hello, i am also from oklahoma. my sister amanda had her twins at 24 weeks-one day shy of- on april 20, 2005. Both boys are doing good as of today. they have both had surgery for pda, both had ivh, one had a level 2 and the other a level 4 which has gone to a leve 3. we found out a week ago that they will be coming home in a few weeks. we found out yesterday that the one with the level 4 bleed has also been diagnosed with ROP. my sister has almost lost hope a few times, and now with the rop being the last straw i think-i am trying to help her stay hopeful that things are going to be alright but she can't seem to keep her doubts from taking over. i have seen so many wonderful miracle stories and hopefully by letting her see all the wonderful happy endings to the nicu experience it may give her some hope as well. i am expecting twins also, we were only 10 weeks apart, so i am scared not only for my nephews but also for my babies as i am not made to carry them, but all is good so far, i just realize the possibilities that i have and see what my sister has gone through then read all of the stories on the board and am amazed at what these tiny ones go through and survive. i know that not all have made it and feel truly deeply sorry for those losses and can't even imagine to think how that would be. i have had many miscarriages, and some close calls with my second pregnancy, but never lost one that late on.
my sister's boys are in the nicu in okc, i was born there 28 years ago-and have full faith in the hospital-i had a 10% chance of survival and am here today kickin because of them.

Re: OKLAHOMA
Hi.. I gave birth last year June 23,2004 to twins. i was 24 weeks and 3 days pregnant. Nathan weighed 1 pound 5 ounces and Noah weighed 1 pound 1 ounce. They both did well for a while... we lost Noah after 12 days from an infection and complications. Nathan stayed in the NICU at OU Childrens for 77 days and came home last Sept. He was pretty lucky... we had one bad scare with him and almost lost him but he really had no major complications. After coming home he had laser surgery on both eyes and his ROP has 100% regressed. He had surgery last month for bi-lateral hernia's.... but those are his major things he had done. He came off of oxygen in Feb this year.
He just turned 1 and has been crawling for over a month now... he pulls up on everything! You can see pics of him in the NICU here:
http://community.webshots.com/user/samylaine newer photos are here
http://community.webshots.com/user/samezsilli His new Birthday web page:
http://happybirthdaynathan.n8andnoah.com/index.html and you can see video of him here
http://videos.n8andnoah.com/index.html We love the doctors and nurses at Childrens and we still email them updates... they are always happy to see us! They even have Nathan on one of thier new billboard ads up here! Tell your sister I am thinking of her and her babies! Sammie

Misty, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of your daughter. My heart aches for you. The web site is a great way to get in touch with other mothers who know what you are going through and can offer a lot of support.
I have all of the pictures from our digital camera on the computer. On the bottom of this page I hit browse to find where the pictures were saved on my computer. I'm not really very good on the computer, my husband just showed me how to do this. I hope this helps, sorry if I'm not very clear on my explanation. Let me know if there is anything else I can do to help.

Mom to 26 weeker and anticipating another
Hello. My name is Jennifer Fuller and I live in Bethany, OK which is in the Oklahoma City metro area for those of you not familiar with it. I have a 17 1/2 month old little girl who was born at 26 weeks and weighed in at 2lbs. We are currently expecting and due in March, however, the doctor informed us 2 weeks ago that helping us make it to 28 weeks was all they could do. We are just doing our best to prepare ourselves to go through the NICU experience all over again and trying to keep our little one in as long as possible. Is anyone aware of any support groups in the okc area for parents of preemies?

Hi my name is Brooke and we are the Ambassador family for the OKC metro. I have 2 1/2 year old twin boys who were born at 28 weeks, our story is attached to my first message. I don't know of any support groups right off hand but I'm sure there are some. I would suggest calling the NICU and asking them if they know of any. I will also check and see what I can find out.

Thank you for the explanation on how to post pictures on the web site. Since you are from OKC have you ate at Toby Keith's restaurant? If you haven't girl you need to go there and eat. His food is so good. I would like to back but, that will be a little hard on me since we lost our baby girl at the Childrens Hospital. I hope you have a good weekend. Misty

WalkAmerica is one of the biggest fund raisers for the March of Dimes. They have a walk every year to promote prematurity awareness and raise money to prevent prematurity. The OKC walk is a 6 mile walk on May 6th. The walk is a way for anyone who's lives have been touched by prematurity to get involved. It's also for anyone who just wants to help raise money for the cause.
If you would like to participate let me know and I can make sure you get all the info you need.

I think that would be great for me to do something like that. I could do that for the baby I just lost and for my 4yr. old. She was premature. She was 5weeks early and she had to have tubes put in her ears when she was 1yr. old and now it set her back alittle. I would be interested in something like that. Here is my address (823 E. 60th Place North Tulsa, Ok. 74126). Thanks for the info. BIG HUGS this holiday season, Misty

My name is Ashley and I gave birth via c-section to my daughter, Chastity on April 11, 2002. I was 24 weeks pregnant and had went into premature labor owing to a weak cervix. We were able to have steroid shots administered while attempting to put off labor a little longer, but she decided she was ready to come out despite the magnesium iv's. She weighed 1 pound and 15.7 ounces (thanks in part to the steroid injections) and was 14 inches long. She only had a 5-10% chance of survival on her first day of life and her father was told she probably wouldn't be alive for longer than 10 minutes, but thankfully she was strong enough to survive. She was on the ventilator much longer than most preemies and when she was finally moved to an isolette, she had to be placed in the back since she was so sensitive to noises and light. She was later diagnosed with aqueductal stenosis - a rare form of hydrocephalus - in the NICU and had undergone blood infusions and a spinal tap already. We were told that there was a strong probability that she would also be mentally handicapped as well as suffer from cerebral palsy. Fortunately her neurosurgeon - Dr. Francell, was able to perform a surgery on her brain that allowed her to not worry about having to have a shunt placed. The spinal fluid finally began to drain and everything was great. We were able to bring her home approximately three months after she was born and yes, she had a few set backs but nothing too serious. She was on oxygen and a heart monitor for a little over 6 months after her hospital release. She also acquired RSV and was hospitalized early on in the diagnosis. Other than that, we are very happy to have our three year old daughter who is not only able to walk and physically function just as well (if not better) as full-termers, she is also incredibly intelligent for her age. Her doctor is extremely impressed with her intellect that we were warned would probably be absent. She can recognize the alphabet and her numbers and colors and shapes. She can speak large parts of the Spanish language as well as Lakota Sioux, Hebrew (my collegiate language at OU) and Russian (her father's collegiate language at OU). They say it is typical for preemies to be "bratty" for lack of a better term, but our daughter is incredibly polite and well-mannered. She is truly our angel from above and during her stay in the NICU, we prayed and prayed and prayed for her health and well-being. There was nothing we wanted more than for her to stay alive, no matter her physical and mental capacity. Luckily the Lord has been very kind and merciful in our situation and we have nothing else to be this thankful for. I am now 33 weeks pregnant with a boy and had to have a cervical cerclage placed in order to prevent another premature birth, I also had the steroid injections at about 26 weeks just in case. I know not everyone's story is as positive as mine, but I am just giving hope to those who feel they do not have any. ANYTHING is possible and Chastity proved that!

Once you register online you can print out a sponsor page to keep track of all your donations. You can also set up a personal web page with MOD and people can make donations online. Last year I sent letters to all my friends and family telling them about our story, explaining the mission March of Dimes and why I was raising money. I gave them the option to send checks to me or go to my web page to make and online donation. You can view my web page at www.walkamerica.org/2miracles for an example. I hope this helps and good luck on your fund raising. I haven't started on my fund raising yet. Let me know if there is anything else you need help with.

Hi my name is Brooke and I am the March of Dimes Ambassador Family for the Oklahoma City area. I am so sorry to hear that you lost your daughter. My heart always breaks when I read of parents losing there children. This is exactly why the March of Dimes is so important to me.
I would love to help you get involved with the March of Dimes in your area. There are several March of Dimes offices and events throughout Oklahoma. Let me know what town you live in and I can get you the number for an office near you.

mom of 26 weeker and new 28 weeker
I had my second preemie on December 29, 2005. He was 28 weeks and weighed 2 pounds 9 ounces. He is doing very well and is up to 3 pounds 6 ounces now. He is no longer on oxygen or any IVs, just the feeding tube. We are so blessed that he is doing so well and will probably be home in 2-3 weeks. The doctors have told us that he has a brain bleed, but I can't seem to find out what excatly that means and what the possible complications may be. They don't seem to want to go in to details about much. We have also been informed that his bones are slightly transparent. When our daughter was born in June 2004 she didn't have any of the complications that he is having. If anyone can shed some light on these things I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!!

my son had a brain bleed
my son had a brain bleed. he was born at 23 weeks, he had a grade 3 on the left and a grade 4 on the right. The grade 4 was the maxiumim bleed. it was very massive. they didn't expect him to live the first week. He has a shunt. Which drains his celebral spinal fluid. From the brain bleed he developed something called hydrocelphas. It is water on the brain. it's something that is a result of a brain bleed. Usually a brain bleed is from being early. A person's blood carries oxygen, well with a premature baby basically you're not ready to do that. Well when that change happens, it causes the brain bleed. Like I said my son had a massive bleed. I don't know what kind yours had, but usually long term conplications comes from the grades 3 and 4. My son was diagonosed with celebral palsy. He has it on one side of his body, His left side of his body is really tight. He is compared to a stroke patient. He gets PT, OT and speech therapy. He is almost 2 years old now, and doing good. Naturally he is developmentally behind, not walking, crawling, or sitting without support, but his therapist says that they see a change in him daily. and they have high hopes for him. But everything will be okay trust in the Lord and stay strong. There have been times I have been so depressed and down, but I promised myself I would never let my son see it. love your baby with all your heart no matter what happens or the complications it may have. I have always said that the Lord wouldn't give a special child to just anyone. He gives them to people he knows is strong enough to handle them and people who will take care of them. i suggest you go to a book store and get books. I bought a book at Books a million, called Preemies, its about 500 to 600 pages and I have learned so much. We lived in Fort Smith AR, I saw you are from Oklahoma, please write back I would love to talk more. There so much that I can tell you about.

We made it through my daughter being in the NICU for 8 weeks, but she didn't have any medical conditions other than just being a preemie. With my son that is not the case so it is getting harder to just wing it on our own and the doctors this time are not as willing to sit down and explain things with you. My son is at OU Medical Center which is where my daughter was as well. It is a teaching hospital so you just get stuck with whatever resident is there at the same time you are. My daughter is the same age as your son. Her birthday is June 14th, when is your son's? Do you still live in Arkansas?

WalkAmerica: I was just wondering if anyone knew if there was a kickoff for the walk planned here in OKC?
Re: WalkAmerica
To lilliesmom:
Hi my name is Brooke Robertson and I am the OKC March of Dimes Ambassador family. I will be speaking at the kickoff and I would love to meet you. The kickoff for WalkAmerica is February 28th at the NW Expressway Marriot and you need to call the OKC March of Dimes office at 943-1025 to RSVP by February 17th. Before you RSVP for the kickoff you need to register to participate in WalkAmerica (if you haven't already). You can register online at www.walkamerica.org, or you can call the March of Dimes office.
Thank you for your participation. I hope to see you there.

Also from Oklahoma
I just wanted to say hello and put myself out here. I am from Oklahoma also.....near OKC. I have b/g twins that turned 19 months old yesterday. They were born 6 weeks early and spent only 10 days in the NICU. They weighed 4.12 lbs. and 4.4 lbs. and were 18.75 inches at birth. On their due date, my daughter became very ill and was checked into Children's Hospital at the OU Med Center. She was there for 2 weeks. She had Pyloric Stenosis but it took them nearly 2 weeks to diagnose it b/c she was a preemie. She had to have a central line put in b/c she nearly died of dehydration at 7 weeks of age. Now she is doing fine but b/c of being a preemie and b/c of her setbacks at such an early age, she has had to overcome some obstacles. She started Soonerstart at 5 mos. of age and is still active in it although she is about get graduated out! Anyway, I just wanted to introduce myself to all you other Okies out there.

I am sorry to hear about your 3 month old. Thanks for welcoming me here. It is good to get to know other moms especially ones that have been through this same ordeal. How is Soonerstart going for you? We have another therapy appointment this coming week. Hopefully it will go well.

Sorry I haven't been on here in a while. Soonerstart has been going okay just not making any progress with my 2 year old. She only says momma when she wants. Right now it is sometimes hard b/c I don't have my 3 month old. My sisters baby gives me some peace b/c I know Jocelyn is telling me that when I take care of my nephew that it is okay with her. If you want you can e-mail me any time (momof_4girls@yahoo.com). I will talk to you later. Misty phone number and address removed

New From Oklahoma
Hi Everyone
I am new to this site. My husband and I are first time parents to twin girls born at 28 weeks. They were born November 11, 2006.
Kenli was born weighing 2lbs 6 oz and was 14.8 inches long and Kenzi weighed 2lbs 11 oz and was 15 inches long. Kenli had a harder time in the NICU. She was placed on NEC watch two different times and Kenzi just had the typical preemie behaviors. Those were the brady's and the apnea. They each had two blood transfusions. We were truely blessed not to have any other problems. We left our NICU family on January 4, 2007. The girls both came home on apnea monitors. They were both on those for 6 months. Kenli and Kenzi are now almost 9 months old. They are rolling every where, almost crawling, and cutting teeth. I thought the day would never come that I would get to bring my babies home. Now here they are. Time really does fly. My husband and I just want enveryone in this situation to remember to keep the faith. There will be many ups and downs. We know the rollar coaster ride you are on. So we would love to hear any stories anyone would like to share. Good luck to you all. God Bless.
Danessa and Levi

Fundraiser
Hey everyone! I live in the OKC area and am trying to put together a consignment sale fundraiser to benefit the March of Dimes. I am looking for anyone who would like to be a consigner. We did a sale last August and it went well but I really need more people to consign items to sale. If you are interested please let me know and I can give you more information about it. Thanks!

Twenty six weeker with level 3 and 4 bleed
Hi, I am new to this site and was hoping to meet other moms with similar stories. I have a beautiful baby boy born at twenty six weeks having a level three bleed on the left side and a level four bleed on the right. My husband and I were asked to withdrawal support for him when he was two days old. He will be seven months tomorrow and doing well.

Mommy of 2 preemies!
Hello everyone! I'm an Broken Arrow mommie of 2 premature babies....well....they aren't babies anymore. Lincoln was born March 10, 2007 at 31 weeks and Lauren was born April 8, 2008 at 33 weeks. Both had no problems but to feed and grow. Lincoln was in the NICU for 25 days and Lauren was in for only 7. It's amazing the difference. But they are both healthy and so smart...you would never guess they were born premature. Until I had 2 I had never known anyone who had premature babies or even losses. I have a girlfriend you had her 1 baby girl at 28 weeks the same day that I had Lincoln so we had a support group just the 2 of us! I also have a girlfriend you lost 2 baby boys due to IC but with a successful TAC put in was able to have a beautiful baby girl.
My heart goes out to all you preemie mommies who have babies in the NICU. Keep praying and know that God is with them. And those with angel babies you are in my thoughts and prayers.
I've attached a pic of my kiddos!
