Congrats on Ethan. He is so cute. My son was born at 31 weeks and spent 28 days in the NICU. He would have come home sooner, but he had a PDA that did not want to close. I wish you lots of luck! I am sure that he will be home before you know it. God bless

He's home!
Ethan came home on Saturday! He is currently using a car bed because he couldn't pass his car seat challenge, but we'll do whatever we need to to have him home! He spent a total of 34 days in the NICU. They felt SO unbearably long while we were there, but now they're just a blur! Yay!

mom of 26 weekers
my twins were born at 26 weeks. Aidan spent 5 months in the NICU. Lanndon came home at 3 months but because of his problems he ended up going back in for another 4 months. they are both home now and are doing great. I should warn u that it is never over. Both of mine have been in and out with the flu and bronchitis. The smallest cold can get worse over night with these little premies so be prepared.

Mason was a 33 weeker weighing 6 lb 8 oz.
Here in england we call it scbu rather than nicu but anyway he was there 23 days. Came off oxygen at 8 days but he was a bit of a lazy boy with his feeds hence the reason he took a while longer to come home.

My son Michael was born at 29 weeks and weighed 2 lbs. and spent 68 days in the NICU and came home 5 days before his original due date. He had to be able to drink from a bottle within so much time (I think it was like 20 to 30 minutes) and he had to be able to hold his own temperature. He came out of his incubator 1 day before he was released, and he weighed 5 lbs. 7 oz. the day he was released. Today he is 19 months old.

Congratulations!
I think a read your message a little late I know how much happy you must feel now. It is so difficult to have your baby in the NICU the only wish you have is can have your baby at home. Natalia was a 35 weeker, she weight less than 3 pounds when was born. She was in the NICU by 1 month. When she was 2 months old she had a cirugy but now she is ok, beautiful, and smiles a lot.

I wish you all the best!

Re: How long was your baby in NICU?
My second son was in the NICU for 60 days. He was born at 29 weeks gestation and weighed 2lbs 2oz...He had very few complications while he was in the NICU except for sometimes he couldn't tolerate his feedings and would have to be taken back off of them and an infection here and there, but nothing serious...they basically wouldn't let him come home til he was over 5 lbs. He finally came home when he was 5 lbs 3 oz and came home on a sleep apnea monitor.

My son Caleb was very fortunate. He was born at 31 weeks, and weighed in at 5 lbs 1.2 oz. He only spent 11 days in the NICU. I am very sorry for those who have children in the NICU for long periods of time. Anytime a child goes to the NICU it is stressful, and very scary. And even though not being able to bring him home immediately was so hard, I do feel that it was beneficial to him. He is now a big 17 month old. He currently weighs around 35 lbs and is about 34 inches tall.

My baby has been home from the NICU for 12 days now! He was born at 33 weeks and 6 days, weighed 5 lbs 10 oz, and was in the NICU for 18 days. He came home on 1/16 liter of oxygen and got off of it on Monday. He is gaining weight like crazy (he's now over 8 lbs) and doing great! My son is now 2 months old. He was 5 weeks preemie, even though he was born at 6lbs.7oz.s he was born with namonia and had preemie lungs. That to me is a very scary thing knowing/ seeing your baby off and on forgetting to breath out of no where. But thank god for the great doctors and nurses. They always tried to make me feel better. Cause with stuff like that its hard not to freak out. But I kept the faith

14 months in the NICU? Is that right? What is PICU? Just curious. Is your baby doin any better yet? I hope so. Hopefully you'll be able to take the baby home soon. I know as much as I wanted mine home even though I bought the baby monitor that lets you know whithin 20 seconds if your baby stops breathing, I was still very nervous wondering if he was going to be sent home before he was ready. One week and a day before my baby was born I was sent to the hospital for my blood pressure being to high and I had to see the sadest thing, it had me crying. A man comes running in the emergency room holding what had to be a new born boy , then i hear the words help me he stoped breathing. Man did my heart droped to the floor for that man and his boy. I wish there was something I could of done. Then when I went to register the mom ran in and asked if a man came in with a baby boy. And no one was answering her. So I said yes, cause if it were my baby I would like to know whats going on too. Then she asked did they say if he stoped breathing, and I started crying with her and knoded my head and she fell to the floor crying and at first they wouldn't let her back. Which to me is wrong but when they finally did about a min. later I heard a woman srceaming Nooooo!!!! and you could hear the crying. So that made me even more worried that he would get sent home early. I just kept thinkn about that day. And still do unfortunatelly thats something I won't never forget. I still check for breathing. Can't help it but it does get easier, I promise.

80 Days in the NICU
Our daughter was born 3 months premature and only weighed 1 pound 6 ounces and had to spend 80 days in the NICU. She actually came home about 3 weeks earlier than the doctors had thought that she was, because when she started nippeling her food she just took off, and within a couple of days she was nippeling everything. She's been home for 2 months now and is doing amazing, she weighs 9 pounds 3 ounces and has been off oxygen for 2 weeks now.

Many of you already know our story, but did just want to jump on and add it into this thread. Katie was born at 32 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. We ended up in the NICU for 147 days. She was diagnosed with Congenital Cytomegalovirus a couple of days after birth. We sat around supporting her, 'waiting' for her little body to kick the virus on its own per doctors orders. After 2 1/2 months of seeing her viral load of CMV come back the same, her liver enzymes get worse, her red blood cell count and platelet counts continue to decrease, a bout of aspiration pneumonia, etc. We decided that enough was enough. My husband contacted the leading CMV Specialist out of Baylor University and she consulted with our physician over the phone and via email. The Specialist stated that typically, in Texas anyway, the treatment is to start a 6 week experimental drug called ganciclovir as soon as a positive CMV comes back (in Katie's case 2 days after birth). So.... central line was placed, 6 week treatment of ganciclovir was given, and miraculously her body, her labs, her enlarged spleen and liver.... got increasingly better. Following the treatment on the very last day, she promptly went into surgery and the central line was removed and she came home to us..... after 147 VERY long days.... I hope that this will help someone out there.
Love, Kelly

27 weeker
My little boy was born in October 2007 at 27 weeks (2 lb 10 oz). His only major challenge was premature lungs. He was sent home after 71 days with oxygen for feedings. He is now fully caught up developmentally, 90+ percentile in height, and will be turning 2 soon.

My Little Miracle Jaden
My son was born on 9/9/09 at 25w1d, 1 lb 10 ozs, kicking and screaming. He is now 5lb 4ozs. This has been a roller coaster ride as you all know, hopefully he will be home soon as he is nippling every other feed but he will probably be sent home on oxygen. Any advice on how to handle this as I am so scared. Thanks.

Re: My son was born at 26 weeks.....
Well, I am happy to give you a hopeful story.... On December 24th we celebrated my daughter 6th birthday. She was born at 25 2/7 weeks and is now a happy healthy kindergartner. Her teacher says she is very smart and such a sweet kid. She spent 93 days in the NICU before she was able to come home and did spend some time in physical and occupational therapy. But most people nowadays are shocked to hear how early she was born... you would never guess if you saw her today.
So don't lose hope, your story is quite capable of having a happy ending. And on those low days, please know that we will be here to give you a shoulder to lean on.
Hugs,
Jackie

Hi and Welcome to Share! My daughter was born at 29 weeks and is now 4 1/2 and on track in preschool. She spent sometime in speech therapy but now will not stop talking or singing. So don't lose hope. The NICU can be a roller coaster of good days and bad but I found taking each day one at a time was sometimes helpful. Be gentle with yourself. It is ok to cry and vent and this can be a good place for all of those things, if you feel comfortable.
We look forward to hearing all about your son.
Take care,
Ellen

Re: How long was your baby in NICU?
Hello ladykaykay and welcome to Share. Congratulations on the birth and homegoing of your son. Yes the NICU ride is a very scary one. My daughter was in there 122 days and was just taken off the ventilator at day 42. Your are right it is very scary having them home, but I promise you will get into the routine of things and although the fear will still be there, you will start to relax and enjoy baby more.
Congratulations again. I look forward to hearing more about your precious son.

how long in NICU..
I have had 5 preemies, the first 3 were all 34 weeks and 3 or 4 days.. the 4th and 5th (twins) 26 weekers..
Baby 1- 34+3 (6# 8.5 oz) was in NICU just 3 days,
Baby 2- 34+3 (6# 9.5 oz) was in NICU 11 days
Baby 3- 34+4 (6# 6.25 oz) was in NICU less than 24 hours
Baby 4- 26+3 (2# 13 oz) was in 58 days
Baby 5- 26+3 (2# 10.5 oz) was in 85 days
Every baby is different, It's all in how they respond to life on the outside... some don't mind it, (my 3rd) some HATE it (my 5th)!

My twins were born at 27 weeks weighting 1 lb 12 oz and he was in for 3 months. We were very lucky that once he came home we never had to take him back again. He did come home on O2 for feedings 10 meds and a heart monitor. His sister was 2 lb 8 oz and was in for 2 months. She also was able to come home and had a pretty smooth go.
I hope that from here on out you have smooth sailing! Congrats on your little mircale!

My son was born at 31 weeks @ 4Lbs 8oz and was in the NICU for 35 days. it took him a while to get the whole "suck swallow breathe" thing down. he came home on an apnea monitor for 2 months (and he was never apnec, it ws just a precaution) as soon as he was maintaining his temp, gaining weight, and consistently took ALL of his meals at FULL FEEDS they let him come home.
Make sure they do an ultrasound on the head and check for PVL before discharge.

I have had two preemies and they each are different. My first child born at 26 weeks was in the NICU for 71 days. My second son was born at 33 weeks and was in the NICU for 3 weeks. My first son was headstrong and stubborn and was determined to get out before his due date. With my second son we were told that there is a new push to keep them in the NICU until they are at 38 or 40 weeks, but he came home at 36 weeks gestation. Besides each child being different I think it depends a lot on the doctor that you have at the time.

my baby boy was born at 25 weeks 1lb 10oz. His first week of life he obtained a fungus in his blood and had to get 2 surgeries the second week. Since he has a full recovery he was taken off the high frequency ventilator and after 6 weeks he was on the nasal cannula...unfortunatley it was too good to be true and he ended up going back on the high frequency as his PDA was affecting him..he got the surgery and since then he has been doing so much better, he is feeding now he was up to 20ml/3hrs but was taken off feeds for a bacteria. He is now back on feeds at 4.5oz /day so 7.5ml for 6 hrs on and 2 hrs off. He is back on the nasal cannula and was just taken off the Hnc today. He just turned 2months today and is 3lbs 2oz...gestistational age "33" weeks + 5 Saturday he will be 34 weeks and we will begin trying to nipple feed. We have been in the Nicu for 62 days so far.

Thank you we just had our monthly conference and the Dr. Told us that it will be another 6-7 week stay the good thing is that our son will be protected from the flu while in the NICU. This Saturday completed 9 weeks in the NICU so we are more than half way there we can see the light. It still makes me sad because having to leave him there everyday is still hard for me. I always cry for my baby boy but never at the bedside soon I won't have to cry anymore.

Well you are right every baby is different. We celebrated our 1st bday last month in the NICU. Looking at a discharge date of Feb, 2011 which totals our NICU stay to about 14.5 months. Not too discourage you but you can do it! No matter how long, 1 day at a time. 1 foot down the hall at a time.

Congratulations on celebrating one year!! I'm sorry that this stay has been so long, but it sounds like you have a great mindset for staying strong through it all. I'll be praying for Feb. 2011 as the goal!! (or sooner!) Tracy

My little Evan was a 28 weeker and he was in the NICU for 73 days. He had a grade III IVH, apnea, 4 blood transfusions, 2 spinal taps, a hole in his heart which closed thank the lord, hernia repair, staph and pneumonia from his vent, feeding intolerance and a few other normal preemie baby things. I just started a blog to share my story and hopefully give others hope that are going through the same situation if you'd like to check it out. His picture now is on there too. I'd love for you all to follow me if you'd like. )

My baby was in the NICU for 7 days. I felt like that was forever so I can only imagine what it's like for babies that must stay longer. But I am thankful for all the wonderful things the nurses helped do for our baby boy. He learned about tummy time, how to soothe himself with a pacifier, and was put on a wonderful sleep/feeding routine from the very first days of life. My son was in the NICU for 21 days. He was born at 34 weeks due to me having preeclampsia and being dialated to 5 cm. The only issue he had was jaundice and learning how to eat from the bottle. Today he's almost 3 months old, weighs in at almost 11 pounds.

Mom to Donovyn (32 weeker), Tristyn (34 weeker), and Naethyn (30 weeker born sleeping) |
|
|
Our first baby, a 32-weeker, was in two different NICUs. He spent two weeks in one where he had blood platelet transfusions and phototherapy. When he was no longer critical, he was moved to a NICU closer to our home. He was transferred the day of his baby shower and I got to ride along in the ambulance. He stayed for an additional week and we got to nest with him before being discharged.
Our second baby, a 34-weeker, SHOULD have been admitted to the NICU. He was orange for two months. The day he was born, the hospital was overwhelmed! There were 18 births in a 24-hour period! His bilirubin levels were in the concerning area, so we were told to have him checked for that at his first peds appt. which was 2 days later. Levels were off the charts there, so we finally got sent a bili blanket. Levels were still high 2 weeks later and we had to take him in like that every 2 weeks for the next two months. Not fun. I stopped giving him breast milk for awhile, as that can also attribute to jaundice, and that did the trick. Now almost 5 years later, one wonders if there is a link between jaundice babies and autism. Our son was diagnosed earlier this year and the studies are interesting . . .

I had my twins at 24.6 weeks on May 5th. They are still in the NICU but will be coming home next week. Babies in the NICU are sent home once they are able to do the suck, swallow, and breathe. They must be able to take a full bottle feeding without their heartrate and O2 saturation dropping. Their apneas must be at a minimum and their weight is 4lbs or above. They also must be able to tolerate sitting in a carseat.

He is so precious!!! My boys came along later than yours did, but my first was born with kidney failure and wasn't able to breathe at first. He was born at 35 weeks, but was over 8 pounds! We don't know really what he weighed because of all the fluid stuck inside his tissues and bladder. Once they drained his bladder, he was 8lbs 4oz, but still VERY puffy with fluid. He was in the NICU for about 3 weeks or so, then moved to the pediatric floor for another 3 or 4 weeks. It's so hard to remember (he's almost 21 now!!!). He had an NG tube until close to when he came home. Later he ended up needing it again and eventually a gtube, but the feeding thing wasn't an issue about not being able to go home. I know they look at a lot, like do they keep oxygen levels stable, even when eating, can they regulate temperature, etc. I have known some moms who's doctor didn't let the baby come home until they could eat totally by mouth though (not usually "kidney kids" otherwise most would never get to go home!)
My second son was born at 35 weeks and 6 days. He was 9 pounds 10 ounces!!!! He had trouble breathing at birth, so was taken to the NICU, but we were lucky that he only had to stay in there for about 5 or 6 hours.
I really hope your little one doesn't take too long getting all the goals the doctors have for him met!
