LAST PICTURES...

Oct 04, 2006 10:23am (EST)

Okay... this is it! I couldn't help but share though. These were a *nightmare* to take. Lots of crying and it took two trips and two hours... I'm happy with the end result though! We got an *adorable* picture of Isaac with his big, toothy, cheesy smile... and goldfish in the corner of his mouth and hands! It was clear bribery... so this facial expression is okay but clearly the best overall of the two. I had to include the group pic we *didn't* choose, too - too funny not to!

The house is mostly picked up now after the party. Not that it won't be trashed again soon! The *new* toys are more big boy toys though - less tiny pieces and balls and stuff and more big balls and big cars and things. Nice for clean-up!

Tomorrow is the daunting cardiology appointment for Sullivan. Actually, I'm looking forward to it. We will NOT receive bad news tomorrow. They're not going to say, "Oh my goodness - his VSD is SOOOO much bigger!" They're either going to say, "Things look the same," or, "Look - it's closed!" So I'm not really dreading it - well, the outcome... I sure am dreading the appointment! Holding my tiny six month old down for an echo was very hard... holding my two year old down is going to be near impossible!! I can't imagine how this will go... I should be thankful that we don't go more often! Please think of us tomorrow... I am *really* hoping for good news!!

Take care, Happy Hump Day!

THE MUCH ANTICIPATED "AFTER" CAKE PICS

Oct 02, 2006 12:23pm (EST)

Sullivan had FOUR - yes four - pieces of his birthday cake! I got lots of crap from everyone about not giving any to Lorne and started getting rude like, "Well, just don't want to have to call 911 when he chokes or take him to the ER tomorrow with aspiration." I should have just let it go... but he's MY kid and I should get to make the decisions no matter how sick/healthy he is! Whew.... go that off my chest!

The boys are beat from their BIG weekend so we're playing to low today. We have our LAST OT appointment today! Our last in-home, they'll still get therapy at CCVI. We had our last PT last week. We have our last special instruction and vision therapy in-home on Wednesday. Next week - our last in-home speech! I can't tell you how much these therapies have helped the boys and how thankful we are to have such great therapists (most of them )..... but I'll tell ya - I can't WAIT to NOT have six people coming to my house every week!! Wonderful.

Happy Monday! Hope to get caught up soon after my house is cleaned up from the festivities!

BIG BIRTHDAY PARTY

Oct 01, 2006 01:29pm (EST)

It was great! The boys had so much fun. It was *beautiful* here yesterday - 75 degrees and sunny without too much wind. I mean, really, I could not have ordered a better day! We spent almost ALL day outside! There were four other kids here (my nieces and Sullivan's Godmother's boys) and I think they all enjoyed playing together. The boys' grandparents were all here, their aunts and uncles (except my youngest brother who had a date weekend at the lake with some fraternity brothers...) and all of Scott's aunts and uncles. My cousin (she's the third adult in the picture below) and her husband and my great-grandma also came from St. Louis and Sullivan's Godmother and her boyfriend and boys were here, too. So many people love the boys!!

The boys had a GREAT time and were so good. They stayed up way past their bedtime and were up early today! Lovely. They got some great new toys - new *big boy* stuff - and didn't "bother" (ie: notice!) me this morning - too busy trying out their new trucks and cars and puzzles.

I didn't have time to take any pictures but my mom took quite literally hundreds. Here are a few I got from my step-mom - waiting for some good ones from my mom, too including *after* cake pictures. Sullivan had FOUR "pieces" (probably 1 1/2 adult sized pieces). The boys hardly ever have sweets - I figured their own birthday party was a time to splurge!

Hope everyone had as good of a weekend as we did!! We had their 2 year pics taken today, too, I'll post those tomorrow.

The cakes! My mom and I (okay... mostly my mom!) spent three hours on these. The boys won't even care.

Off to party!

NEW LA-LA'S!!!!

Sep 29, 2006 11:18am (EST)

Or... for those of you that don't speak "Lorne" - new glasses!! They're very similar but blue. With newwwwwwww, unscratched, unchewed on, perfect lenses!!

It was so "funny" when we went in there to look for the frames - they gave me this speech about how they can use this other type of lens and, "...really thin out those lenses so they aren't SO thick and don't distort his (Isaac's) beautiful blue eyes underneath." I politely informed her that the last place had already done that and that this already WAS the thinned lens! They don't see much prescriptions in the high teens/twenties I suppose!!

Isaac's glasses are "just" an extra. Actually now his old pair, which contain VERY scratched lenses, are the extra - these are his new every day glasses! Okay... Sunday - for pictures - they will become his new every day glasses... for now they're on the shelf.

Lorne's are going to be a Godsend! We have to patch him 3/4 waking hours to strengthen that lazy right eye. His left eye has not had cataract surgery or any surgery other than "just" the laser so it is so much stronger. His left eye is very near-sighted still (-11.25) so on this pair, we took that lens out! Well, we made it a "fake" lens so our doctor said we can do this instead of patching! He can wear this pair 3/4 of the time and then the old pair the other part of the day. Since the correction for his left eye is so substantial, our doctor said not having it but having the prescription in his right eye is just as good as those stupid patches he doesn't keep on anyway. Woohoo!!

Hoping to post pictures of my cake adventures... I'm too busy calling Hy-Vee though and seeing how much notice they'll need to personalize a cake. Not going well! The big Par-Tay is tomorrow - I can't wait!!

Happy Friday!

Kara

OVERREACT? WHO... ME???

Sep 25, 2006 06:33pm (EST)

Okay, Lorne's "ringworm" is gone - less than 72 hours later and without treatment. Okay... so I jumped the gun.

We had THE busiest day!! It started at 8:30 with Lorne's LAST visit with his PT!! We chose months ago, when he would officially have "graduated," that we'd like to keep her on until school started just to make sure... that way if they felt like he needed anything at school, he would already have it on the books and not need another auth. He did great and she still sees *no* need for him to need further PT. I'm so proud!!

Lorne then had a feeding clinic appointment at 11:00. It went just okay. Lorne was extremely irritated about something and didn't "perform" very well. He only wanted to sit on Mommy's lap and wouldn't do much other than chant and whine, "Down! Down!" I kept offering him a choice, you know - like you're supposed to... "No, Lorne, down is not a choice. Your choices are Mommy or highchair. Do you want Mommy or highchair?" "DOWN!" She did say we could try thickened liquids in a cup for him!! Very exciting. We don't have to go back for six weeks. She commented on how in the past five weeks, he is talking SO much more!

Then... the big appointment. His official two-year old appointment. He weighed.... 28".4" pounds (it irritates me when they put ".4" when they mean "4 ounces"... which would be ".25"... but that's the nerd in me ) ANYHOW... 28 pounds 4 ounces - the 40th percentile for his actual age. He was... 35 1/2 inches long - the 90th percentile for his actual age. These numbers were the opposite of this last time - like 10% for height and 75% for weight. He was FAT. But, those that have seen Lorne lately, he's NOT a skinny boy now, either. So, we're happy with those numbers. Lorne was half an inch shorter than a ruler when he was born... now he's half an inch shorter than a yard stick.

She said the "ringworm" was likely an allergic reaction to bug bites. The word "allergic" made me a bit nervous but she assured me it was not a big deal. She said that the more he is exposed as he grows older, the reaction will lessen.

I brought up the Synagis something like, "What do you think about just asking the insurance company about Synagis for Lorne this year?" The response..., "I sent in requests for *all three boys* on Wednesday." What a gal! Of course, that doesn't mean anything but that she asked for them - not that we'll get them - but I love that she had already done that!

As we were leaving, I asked her about when we needed to come back. She said if we don't get Synagis (they would, of course, weigh him before each shot to determine the dosage) he should come back in six months for a weight/height check. She said THAT is her main concern (the height and weight) because, get this, "I don't really have any developmental concerns for him at this time."........ for those of you that missed it, and are rubbing your eyes in disbelief, I will repeat... our DOCTOR said about MY Lorne that she, "Doesn't have any developmental concerns for him." Okay, so she added, "at this time," but who cares? MY little boy - remember him? The one who was born 17 weeks early... before the "point of viability"... who couldn't sit up or roll over or cross mid-line on his first birthday... doesn't evoke any developmental concerns in a medical professional. Amazing. Of course he is getting EI services still, ST and OT but they are really cutting back on those and I don't think he would qualify for them now if he had to. She asked me how many words he said, I guessed 25 (never really thought about it!) and she wrote that down... minutes later when we had been there for a while and she had seen him in action, she said, "I'm SURE he has more than 25 words." My dad made a comment like, "Wow... did you think two years ago he'd be at this place?" And I responded with, "Geez... six months ago I wouldn't have believed we'd be at this place!"

The poor kid is SO doctored out and freaked to be put on the exam table at the doctor. He hates shots (who *likes* them?) and got one of those today. So I thought, why stop there, let's get a haircut! We've rescheduled our 2 year pics for Sunday so I wanted him to look nice... he did SO well! This is the kid who last week the (LAZY) woman at the haircut place refused to cut because he was freaking out so much. He whined a bit but did great!

What a FANTASTIC day!!

Can't wait to see you October 14th and 15th in KC for the Share (Re)union!

SOMETHING NEW FOR THE MCTRIPLETS

Sep 23, 2006 06:20pm (EST)

There are many rites of passage in childhood... in OUR days it was chicken pox - though they have a vaccine for that one now. Pink eye... and then those others my boys have already endured... pneumonia... bronchilitis... TWO bouts of the stomach flu.... and now... ring worm! Yeah, seriously, *ring worm*.

I can't help but KNOW that Lorne got this nasty ailment at Paradise Park on Wednesday. He has spots on his arm (times three) and two spots on his face. We were not able to make urgent care today (we assumed these were bug bites for a long while and didn't get worried until after UC was closed) so they are not "confirmed" but Mom's intuition says.... all out.... *ring worm*.

ICK!!! I mean, totally yuck. It is nasty - like athlete's foot on your face. It is REALLY contageous and I'm sure all three boys will have it soon. For now, it is "just " Lorne. We can "only" wash sheets and towels daily, sanitize EVERYTHING... but we truly can't possibly limit ALL skin-to-skin contact between the boys. Honestly... a skin infection is absolutely NOTHING compared to the stomach flu or, God forbid, a respiratory infection. Who cares??!! Of course, this means canceling our two year pics tomorrow and we are obviously not attending the ice cream social tomorrow. UGH!! I'm almost *so* happy the Rock girls are sick though and planned already NOT come over... instead of us noticing these spots on Lorne tomorrow after they'd already been exposed. There are urgent care hours tomorrow but Lorne already has an appointment on Monday... I don't think we would do anything different in the 24 hours in between but that means exposing Lorne TWICE to peditrician's office germs... so I think we'll just stick with Monday's appointment.

UGH!! Ode to childhood illnesses... the gross ones that *don't* worry me that much!!

THEY'VE NEVER EVEN BEEN TO BOSTON!

Sep 22, 2006 12:09pm (EST)

The boys are cracking me up. Everything they say has a *distinct* New England accent. They love to close the "doe-uh" (door). They ask for, "moe-uh" (more) Cheerios. It is SO cute!! Their vocabulary is really taking off. For the first time (not sure if this is a positive or negative), Lorne and Isaac are really ahead of their "little" brother in this one area - verbal communication. Sullivan is still best at communication what he wants but it is mostly signing and pointing. Not sure what's going on there. Hoping they can take a look at preschool (IN LESS THAN THREE WEEKS!!) and get him some ST if he needs it.

The poops are gone, thank goodness! Not really "nothing" but nothing all too eventful, either. Just poops for three days but no vomiting or even acting that sick except for the fact that they seem a bit more tired than usual. And when did I become this mom?? The one that can carry on a twenty-minute conversation about poop?? They had to be poopy-free for at least 24 hours in order to head to CCVI today for our O & M evaluation so, at 1:00 yesterday, I called and canceled. We've rescheduled for next Friday - hope that works out!

Unfortunately, now Sullivan has a runny nose and cough. The other two don't seem to be effected (and Isaac never got the poops!) so hopefully he'll be better soon. He's had a runny nose for a few days but last night, I could hear him coughing all night. Geez, they're not even IN school yet! In a few weeks they'll be in contact with four other little germ factories twice a week... hope this isn't tell-tale of things to come!

Our weekend plans are all but dissolved. Denise and I just talked and we're NOT getting together with the kids tomorrow. Sunday we're still supposed to get pictures and I think we'll try it as long as Sullivan isn't coughing all over. The ice cream social is after that and, again, we'll only go if the boys are healthy. Monday Lorne has a feeding clinic appointment and his *two-year* check up! I opted to take them separately since I already have a babysitter that day. I figure even if I have to take all three to Isaac and Sullivan's, how much easier would it be to only have two getting shots, weights, etc.? Hoping this is as good of a plan as I think it is!! I'm also going to beg and plead our doctor to at least ASK for Lorne to have synagis this year since he's going to school. I know it's a long shot and the worst she can say is, "You're crazy."

Have a great weekend everyone!!

*YOU* ARE IMPORTANT!

Sep 21, 2006 10:17am (EST)

YOU - yes YOU!

I have said before, we have a *wonderful* support system - wonderful friends, amazing family and tons of people that love us and care for us. But... none of them have ever been through anything we have.

I never knew anyone who had a baby in the NICU.

I never knew anyone who had a baby who had surgery at less than a month old.

I never knew anyone who had a child on a ventilator - ever.

I never knew anyone who brought a child home with oxygen.

I never knew anyone who had to learn how to feed their child through a tube in their stomach.

I never knew anyone, personally, who had a child (or children) with visual impairments.

I never knew anyone whose child saw a retina specialist.

I never knew anyone who took their child to the ER, month after month, for a *cold* - which turned into major respiratory distress.

I never knew anyone who TRULY knew what I was going through... until I found YOU!!

All of you!! And, selfishly, I want to meet YOU! In person! I want to give you a hug and say, "Thank you for the support," or, "It's going to be okay." I want you to connect with other moms that have been through what you have. *I* want to connect with other moms that have been through what I have!! Where in the world... besides the internet... can you do that??!!

The Share Union!!!! Oh, I can't wait, just CAN'T WAIT!! This is better than Christmas... almost. In less than ONE MONTH - I will be getting to do this! To meet YOU, to say hello, to exchange hugs, to giggle and to cry. I just can't wait!!

Will YOU be there?? Will YOU be in Kansas City October 14th and 15th? Will YOU come to this amazing union of a group of wonderful women (and men!)?? I hope the answer is YES!!!!!!

Please come join us!! It will be great - just great! Learning, talking, commisserating, bonding, scrapbooking... the works. If you're interested, click here for the details. Can't WAIT to see you!!'

(think I got the computer/photo thing figured out... here's a test... Scott and I at the wedding Saturday if it works!)

MOMMY AND LORNE'S DAY OF FUN!

Sep 20, 2006 07:06pm (EST)

We had a great day! We started off at Paradise Park - an indoor playplace that includes pretend play areas like a grocery store and pizza place, a face painting area, a HUGE ball pit and climing/tunnel equipment, a cooking area, an art area, an outdoor playground and a big wheel race track. It would be a GREAT place - for a four year old. Lorne did have fun exploring and walking around but it was all a bit "old" for him. After this, we met Daddy for lunch and then Lorne and I went to the mall to search for *the* shoes for Isaac's Halloween costume... unsuccessfully! In case you're wondering what were looking for... grey shoes... I'll give you a hint on our costumes... MY shoes are bright red, I will have my hair in pigtails, a certain Share mom did this same "theme" last year with her three, Sullivan will be wearing a straw hat, Isaac has a heart *expertly* sewn on his shirt (thank you very much!), and Lorne is working on his roar. I kind-of wanted to get these cute themey costumes "out of the way" (last year we were the three little pigs) while they're still too young to care!

Lorne had a super yucky diaper today while we were out. When I got home, I found Sullivan had the same! Ick. I'm *so* hoping they don't have ANOTHER (their third) bout of the stomach flu! They act fine otherwise and nothing coming out "the other end" (their mouths) so maybe it's just a fluke? Maybe??? We don't have time for this! My big boys and I are supposed to be hosting a "dinner party" (tacos and beer) for Denise and the kids and some other friends. Eeek! Sunday is our two year pictures and then the *ice cream social* at CCVI! I am SO hoping this is NOT a "real" illness! Oh, and the boys have their Orientation and Mobility evaluation on Friday. (And while I'm on the subject... anyone <cough, cough, Melissa> know what this O & M eval might look like?) Please think poopy-free thoughts for us!

Today was just great. It is hard to not constantly reflect on the past two years. At lunch Scott said, "If you would have told me two years ago that I would have clocked out of work at a cabinet shop and come to join you and Lorne (tube-free, healthy, Lorne) at a restaurant, I never would have believed it!" I ran in to an aquaintence from college that I haven't seen or talked to since the year we lived in the dorms together. She told me how adoralbe Lorne is, etc., etc.,... when I told her he was a triplet she asked how early they were born. "Like 35 or 36 weeks? I know triplets are born early." I did tell her the boys' birth story but it just made me think, "Wow... this girl who is basically a stranger thinks my kid was essentially full-term." Amazing. What a big boy!

I've said it before and I'll say it again... YOU, yes, you... come to the Share Union in October!! I can't WAIT to meet all of the peole that care about the boys and how they're doing - those of you that read and comment on my blogs and care about my boys. I can't wat to meet all of the moms who I've been following for so long whose babies *I* care so deeply for. I can't WAIT for us all to get together and help SAVE BABIES!!! SEE YOU THERE!!
