CRAWLING, CLIMBING, INTO EVERYTHING
|
 |

Aug 10, 2009 06:06pm (EST)
Well, we are back from a wonderful week on the beach and Joshua is into everything. He is still dragging one leg a little while crawling but he can get anywhere he wants to go. He has pulled all the O2 tanks out from under the couch, found the electrical outlets and every electronic in the livingroom. He is so busy.
Now that he is crawling he has to take a nap every 2 hours. He is so much stronger then he was but he is still not like the girls were. Everything he does takes so much more from him. I really have to keep a good eye on him. I have noticed him showing more signs of respitory distress since he is on the move. He perks up with some O2 support and a breathing treatment if he is coughing.
Has anyone else noticed increased gagging with crawling? Joshua has always had the "gag" but now he is gagging more and I am noticing it is when he is crawling.
I will post pics. soon.

I AM NOT GONE...
|
 |

Jul 30, 2009 05:56pm (EST)
Hi all...
I have been at a training in Indy this week and now I am packing for Florida. We are planning on having some fun in the sun. I am so tired of clouds and mild temperatures. I want to be able to swim and enjoy some sunshine. I heard on the news today that this is the first time on record that the Louisville area has never had a 90 degree day in the month of July. Crazy.
Before I go...
Joshua is everywhere. He is mastering the art of crawling. It is so cute. He has had his first fight with oxygen tubing. I was very impressed that he knew what was holding him back and he turned around, grabbed the tubing and started pulling.
I am not going to be online while gone...I am giving it up for a week and just enjoying my family.

EYES
|
 |

Jul 24, 2009 06:42am (EST)
I took Joshua to see Dr. Ikram yesterday. She is Joshua's eye Dr. He is still crossing. I was by no means shocked. The left eye is actually turning back in further then right after surgery. He is also not able to move his eyes to the side. There are 2 reasons for this. His muscles are too loose on the sides and he has some other thing happening. It was a really long name that I did not write down but the gist is his vision is not focusing directly in the center of the back of the eye but off to the side.
She gave me some eye exercises to do with him. She is getting approval for eye drops that blur vision since his won't leave on an eye patch. She put him in glasses...to use at small intervals until he is used to them. Lastly, he will have a second surgery once his eyes are completely healed from the first surgery.
I guess we will be working hard on straightening his eyes out. I am confident we will get his eyes perfect.
I saved the great news for last...Joshua crawled all on his own yesterday.

GROWING UP...AND GETTING WELL
|
 |

Jul 16, 2009 11:07am (EST)
Joshua is now 20 lbs. and 29 inches long!!! Wow, when I look at him without his cannula on it is hard to believe that he is that same little tiny baby that has struggled for a year and a half. Now everything is starting to click and he is just moving along like nothing was ever wrong.
We went to visit Dr. Eid the pulmenary specialist. He was so pleased with Joshua. He could not stop smiling. He was so happy to see Joshua off his oxygen. He said that we can stop two of his inhaled meds. We only have to give them if he is showing signs of distress. Whoo Woo...only one inhaled med. a day!!! We are going to keep his diaretics where they are at and let him out grow the doses. I feel like I am coming to the end of a long road. It is the best feeling. It is feels like the weight of what we have been through is being shed at a rapid speed now.
Joshua is going to be just fine...he really is. What a great feeling. I have worried so long and but now I know he really is going to be okay. I have wore around a fake everything is going to work out okay face for so long...now knowing it is true is overwhelming. I am so full of joy and relief.

AN AMAZING WEEK
|
 |

Jul 10, 2009 06:06am (EST)
Wow! What a week. Joshua is blooming more and more everyday. He has been going without oxygen support in the house while awake. He is saying Dada and trying new foods. He is doing so well.
Joshua still needs the O's when he is sleeping and anytime he is outside. I am sure we will still have days when he will need a little extra support but to be off the oxygen at all is an amazing step for Joshua.
He is talking up a storm. His favorite word this week is Dada. It is so sweet. He just claps and smiles the whole time he is saying it. It just melts our hearts.
He has tried twizzlers and cheese puffs this week. He loves them both. I look very forward to the day he actually can swallow all these fun new taste that he likes but for now I am happy he will put food in his mouth and spit it out.
We are taking Joshua camping this weekend. I think he will love the pool. He is another water bug like Emily. If I take him outside to watch the girls swim he cries until he gets to get in the pool too. Yes, he is rotten and I love it.
I also am happy to announce that my family team came in ssecond place in the Louisville area. Way to go Team 119!!!

UPDATE
|
 |

Jul 03, 2009 05:27am (EST)
Joshua is 19 pounds. He is looking so good. I think he has finally gotten enough fat that maybe his lungs will start healing!!!! I can hardly wait for the pulmonologist to see him. They are going to be thrilled.
I have got Joshua's O2 weaned down to .2 liters of flow. This seems to be the magic number. Everytime I wean him lower he makes it about two days and then he needs to be turned back up. He has been stating between 95 and 97 so I am not going to try to go lower yet. I'll wait until he is 99 to 100 then I'll give it another try.
Joshua got to see one of his NICU roommates at Bass Pro this week. We were so excited. Daniel was one of the other "trouble makers" in our room. Joshua and Daniel could keep the nurses jumping most nights. Daniel is still on oxygen at night and developmentally about where Joshua is. It was great to see Daniel and his family I really thought I would never get the chance to see them since they live so far away and are part of an Amish community.
We took Joshua to his first baseball game and fireworks show last night. He had a great time. He loved the firworks. I could not believe he had stayed up for the big show.
Joshua has had a great week. He has had a sore throat but that is minor. Have a wonderful 4th.

BIG STEP
|
 |

Jun 25, 2009 01:12pm (EST)
I had a long message ready to post and Joshua just deleated the whole thing. Thanks Joshua.
take 2...
Joshua has been moved out of Mommy and Daddy's room. He is growing up. He has been leaving his cannula in so he is not desating at night near as much. I won't be going down to his room to turn off the alarm and make sure his cannula is in his nose.
We have had a room the I never totally cleaned out for Joshua. I jst could never do it when Joshua was in the NICU. I really did not want to make a room for him and then not have a baby to bring home to the room. I honestly thought it would jinx us. Silly but I was so paranoid. Then after bring Joshua home I never had a free minute. I finally found the time and courage to make Joshua his own space in our house.
I will be so glad when he does not need the oxygen support anymore. Mike and I are trying to accept that it is not going anywhere too soon. He can only go about 10 minutes without support. Poor boy. I keep telling him it is going to be hard to get a girlfriend when he has an oxgen tank.

HEARING SCREENING AND PEDS OFFICE
|
 |

Jun 19, 2009 07:33pm (EST)
Joshua's hearing test went well. He was not put to sleep because of a bad cold. They decided to put him in the sound box. He was able to hear most tones in the normal range. The low tones he did not hear may have been too hard because he has an ear infection.
Since Joshua had fluid on his ears at the hearing screening I had to take him to the peds. office today. He really needed to go after last night. He is full of yuck again, wheezing and had a croupy cough. He was moving air pretty well so we did not do a chest x-ray. The ped. put him on steroids for inflammation of the larynx and trachea. He is taking antibiotics for the ear infection and yuck. We will see how he does through the weekend. I am hoping he gets back to 100%.
