Michele Reeves - 01:00am Oct 7, 2004 EST
2004 National Ambassador Mom

Hi, everybody!!

I am Michele Reeves, Mom to Amanda Reeves the 2004 National Ambassador. I have had the awesome opportunity to meet many local ambassador families this year! How many of you have been an ambassador family OR would like to be an ambassador family? It has been an awesome experience and is our pleasure to give back to an organization that helped to save our daughter's life!!

Hugs!
Michele Reeves

Re: Ambassador Family

You mean there's training you're supposed to go through for being an ambassador?? I was just kinda thrown into it. As much as I love MOD, I don't think our office does a very good job of recognizing ALL the local ambassadors. Our office deals with 3 different counties and since one of the families as been at it longer they tend to get the most attention. It's a bit annoying because everyone has different experiences to share ya know??

Our NICU doesn't have the Family support in effect, but I'm going to talk to them about starting a support group for the parents!

What kind of training did you do?

    Thanks Michele,
I am very excited about it!! Thet actually did the launch while Christopher was in the NICU, and it is the first in NJ. I was one of the mom's interviewed for our local TV stations at the time. It was also nice being a new mom and giving my perspective on the program. I can't say enough about the NICU and the MOD. I want to help anyway I can.
    hugs to you too

    Re: Ambassador Family

The training was basically an introduction. There were two other families there so we shared stories. We watched a video about the walk, and talked with the MOD women that were there about different things we can do in our communities and things that are ok to say during interviews and such as well as things that are best said another way. I liked it mostly because it made us feel like we were there to do something good, and not left to tread water if that makes any sense.

    Re: Ambassador Family

Michelle I read your story and I can relate. My daughter was born at 23 weeks weighing 1lb. 6oz. 12in. She was so tiny. My ring could also go around her whole arm. She spent 99 days in the NICU. And blessed to god she was and is still so healthy. She had no bleeds, no holes in her heart, nothing! She had her typical roller coaster days, but never anything major. I spent morning, noon, and night with her. Today she is a healthy 4 year old. We are getting ready to celebrate her 5th birthday. She is in Pre-K and loves every minute of it. My heart aches to see her grow so fast and be so independent. She wears glasses and attends speech therapy, once a week at school. I'm just so glad to hear of another 23 weeker being completely healthy. I would love to get involved with the March of Dimes, so any information would be greatly appreciated.

I received your message, thanks for getting back.
I live in a little town called Kenedy, Texas. I am between San Antonio, Texas and Corpus Christi, I am 60 miles from each city. So whatever you can help me with would be such great joy. I am so thankful for everything that the March of Dimes has done to my family that I just want to take the time to give back to others. I want my daughter to also get involved.

2003 Austin Texas ambassador family here...

    Hi michelle,

You are right, the experience is amazing. I can't imagine how much travel you had to do as the national ambassador family. I am originally from Greenville, so when you guys were selected, it was right at the end of my stent as ambassador here. My mom cut the article out of the Greenville paper and mailed it to me. My mom and dad still live in greenville (well mauldin actually). We are planning on applying for the national ambassador family for next year (2006). My boys are only 3 now, and i think they want them to be tlaking a little better.

How did that all work out with missing school?

    Michelle

Re: 2003 Austin Texas ambassador family here...

    Hey, Michelle!

I live in Simpsonville, so when you get "home" let me know and maybe we can get together!!

The school has been VERY supportive. Also, when we go on our trips, the chapters have been very good about planning for us to do things that are educational...Children's museum in Providence, RI...Betsy Ross' house in Philly...Polar Beverages in MA...lots of different things! It has been an amazing experience in more than one way!! Also, Amanda's school got involved by doing a map of where Amanda was traveling! They would put a pin and talk about the area that Amanda was visiting that day!

It is a win-win situation for the child and the school!! Good luck and let me know when you will be in SC!

    Hugs!
    Michele

    Ambassador Family

Hello I am Meredith Baker. My family and I divised a team of ten walkers for this past year for the March of Dimes in honor of my twin sons Matthew and Jonathan. They were born at 21 and 22 weeks. They survived only briefly, but are with us in spirit. I was given the Ambassador Family yellow bandana at the walk and would continue to be a part of March of Dimes. This is a wonderful organization and strongly support all the research and dedication everyone provides.

    Hello Everyone!

My daughter Abby was born at 29 wks, weighed 3 lb 1 oz. We've just been named as the Ambassador Family for the Green River area in Western Kentucky! We just attended an Annual Scholarship Benefit Evening, where we were named as the Ambassador Family. The night had a 70's theme & the 3 of us dressed the part, my husband even sported an afro! We had so much fun & are looking so forward to telling others our story! I believe being able to put a face with a cause means SO much & if our story can touch and help just one person then I feel like we've really done something!

    Hugs!

2004 Porter County, Indiana Ambassador Family

We have been involved with the MOD for the past six years. The first four we only raised money and walked with my employer, not knowing we would ever need the services of a NICU. The last two years we have walked for my premature twins (27 weekers) and were the ambassador family for our county last year. (We were also the top walkers for our county thanks to their Grandma's great sales pitch to get donations in their names.) For anyone wanting to do this-DO IT! It is a great thrill to see everyone turn out at the events and there are so many parents of premature babies that walk in the WalkAmerica program.

    Hi Michele

Benjamin and I would love to be an Ambassador Family! We live in Stroudsburg, PA. Could you tell me some of the responsibilities of an Ambassador Family? Our wonderful Social Worker back in Mt. Sinai Hospital where Benjamin was born on 12/24/99, has always kept in touch with us and we have discussed this issue. She now works with the March of Dimes. Her name is LIZA COOPER and we would not have made it through that whole NICU experience without her commitment and wonderful support.

I also wanted to say THANK YOU for your commitment to such a wonderful cause. Five years ago, we did not have a site like this. I can remember feeling so alone and no one understanding what I was going through, except the Moms I had the pleasure of meeting in the NICU! So, it gives me great pleasure to read these magnificent stories and acknowledge their strength and courage!

I received your LIVE messages.....I'm not sure if you are receiving my responses back!!!

    Have a great Holiday!

We, as NICU grads parents, are so BLESSED to have her on our side!! For those of you that don't know Liza, she is the manager of NICU Family Support at the MOD's National Office. Liza has made a difference to many, many NICU families!!

    Re: For Kyla B.

    Hi Kyla,

Well Kyla, I think that is a pretty good topic for an essay and I am totally impressed that you are 11 years old and have such an interest.

First, the March of Dimes has been so committed to doing research on premature births, the family unit and the NICU, plus tons of other related topics that center all on the same thing...prematurity. I think one of the important things about premature babies is that every situation is different, yet all parents go through similar ups and downs in the NICU. Every life is important, and with the continued help and support of the March of Dimes, we will be able to save more babies. I hope you are gathering all your notes from the SHARE Community there are tons of interesting and helpful information here!!! Let me know how your paper goes....maybe you can share it with all of us here!!! I think that would be a wonderful contribution from such a smart 11 year old!!!

Kyla, let me know if you need more help or if you have more questions....and I'll try my best to help you out! My son was born at 34 weeks on 12/24/99 with NEC (bowel and intestinal infection) and he weighed 5 lbs. 3.5 oz, and was 19 inches long. So you see not all babies are 1 and 2 or 3 lbs.

Good Luck and let me know how it goes!!

    Hi Michele,

I have contacted my local MOD's (Berks County Sub-Division) to find out how to become an Ambassador Family. I plan on meeting Jasmine in the coming weeks, around our busy schedules. We have been doing the WalkAmerica since 2003. Our son was born 6 weeks early on Dec 26. and we have a daughter who was born on March 31st with a congenital heart defect. They have helped both my children and I'm sooo glad to do whatever I can
