3 months early and still kickin' todayJessica Corey - 10:26pm Dec 2, 2004 ESTI don't know if this is just for parents of preemies, but as a former Preemie I too would like to share my story. I don't know too much about what my actual time in the hospital was like, but whenever I ask my mom she gets a faraway look on her face and smiles a lot. I was supposed to be born in late October. Instead, according to her, I started kicking insistently around late July. My mom went into labor and after only a few hours I was born. I spent a few weeks in the NICU before I was allowed to go home for the first time. When born, I weighed only about 2 lbs 2 or 3 oz. A month or two later U was back in the NICU - I had dropped to about 1lb 8oz. and was having problems breathing. For the next 8 months I spent the majority of my life in the hospital, and to be quite honest I haven't ever really stopped living in the ER. Now, I am 18, at college, and incredibly happy with the way my life has been. I am still small for my age, only about 5'2", but my mom's about the same height so I don't feel it has anything to do with my preemie birth. As a result of being born 3 months early, I have several medical problems. I am ADHD, on medication since 4th grade, and I have chronic renal failure as a result of the IV medications they gave me as a newborn. I was diagnosed with CRF in the 4th grade as well, and am slated for a kidney transplant this summer. Overall I would say that I am a normal, functioning college kid and I an grateful and forever thankful to the great people at Piedmont Neo-Natal who helped me through a difficult first year of life. To all the parents of preemie's out there, don't despair; we're just ready to come out a bit earlier, and we have every chance at being a wonderful, normal healthy human being. Love keeps us alive +Jessica+

Yay Jessica
It's so wonderful to hear stories from the babies. When we were in NICU with my son It always meant alot to hear the sucsess stories. when Roman is totally out of the woods we will make it a point of going by the hospital to say Hi. The staff gets so attached and they love to see tha babies as they grow:) Good luck on everthing and keep up the good work.
Thanks for your story.

Hi Jessica
Through your wonderful words, I also see a very brave, courageous, passionate, self-confident, bright, and loveable young woman who lives life to its fullest! I just know that your Mother must be so very proud of you! It is so rewarding for us NICU moms to hear from preemies like YOU! So Thank You. I hope all goes well with the kidney transplant.....please let us know how everything is going prior to that too! I wish you all the best of many wonderful things to come and you are truly one of God's great little Miracles! And don't worry about the height thing....I'm not a preemie and you beat me by an inch (I'm a tall 5' 1")! My son, Benjamin was born on Dec. 24th, 1999 with NEC and I am so proud of him today. You give me much hope for him! Have a wonderful holiday and wonderful life! Brenda & Benjamin

Hi Jessica,
Thank you for all the inspiration you have just given me!!! You are quite the young lady. It sounds like you have a tremendous amount of Love in your life.
I wish you all the best at college, and remember just because you had this incessant desire to come into this world so early, don't be in a hurry to grow up to fast!! Enjoy your college years.
Again, Thank you for all the hope. My twin girls were born at 25 weeks and are approaching their 4th birthday in February. In reading your story I know they will to, some day, make it to college!!
Take care,
Karri mom to:
Ian 2-11-99 (38 weeks)
Hanna & Rachel 2-24-01 (25 weeks)
Will 7-14-03 (36 weeks)
