Have you seen the "realistic" preemie doll by Ashton-Drake????

LogansMom28w - 10:19pm Jan 31, 2005 EST
My 3 boybarians are 4, 5 and 7.

As a mom who spent months in the NICU, I am so saddened and disheartened by this portrayal of a "truly real" preemie baby. Ashton-Drake is advertising a doll, Little Grace, and claim her to be "the most realistic preemie doll ever!". I am just sick looking at this. The doll is pink, chubby, and healthy looking. The ad even brags about her "folds and creases". My 28 weeker is still so thin he has no fat whatsoever. How can they sincerely market her? This, to me, seems to undo all the work March of Dimes is trying to do to educate public. All this doll does is reinforce the concept that preterm infants are just like fullterm, only smaller and cuter. "Little Grace" is nothing like my preemie.
I wrote a letter to Ashton-Drake demanding that she be remarketed as a fullterm baby. They sent me a standard form letter reply basically saying that thanks to modern medicine and the support of their loving parents these babies are just fine. My heart feels so saddened by this. I am even more frustrated by the companies blatant disregard to the injustice they are doing for preemie babies. I feel like they are capitalizing on this tragic condition and only adding fuel to the fire. Has the March of Dimes tried to contact the Ashton-Drake Galleries about this ad/doll?
For those of you who haven't seen her, here is the link:

  • sigh* I will post my letter to the company if you guys want to see it, as well as their response. I am so frustrated.

    Preemie doll

I also went to the website yesterday when I read that this company was marketing a preemie doll. My letter spoke volumes!!! I am completely disgusted by "the manner in which they are trying to make a buck". I told them that I was going to send the website to the NICU my children were born so that the doctors and nurses could see the way in which they depict what a preemie looks like. I am a mom of a 1 # 6 ounce ex-31 weeker and a 2 # 11 ounce ex-34 weeker. Both boys IUGR, and NEC. My second son passed away after 3 weeks due to complications from NEC. My first son came home at 3 # 13 ounces and has NEVER had a bit of fat on his body despite the high calorie diet we give him. He is now 5 years old. They should be completely ashamed of themselves!!! I am sure we will all hear something soon since there have been so many complaints! Well, lets hope so.

    March of Dimes response

Hi, this is Pam at the March of Dimes, one of the moderators for the SHARE site. The March of Dimes shares your concerns about the preemie doll currently being advertised by Ashton-Drake. Just wanted to let you know that the March of Dimes will also be sending a letter to the company. The moderators will keep you posted.

Best wishes to all of you and thank you so much for your participation in SHARE. As I have said to some of you, your stories and your love for your children are an inspiration to us.

    Pam

    John Stossel

I wrote to John Stossel as well. If you go to the ABCNews website and look around there is a window just for John Stossel. I clicked on emails to John Stossel. No reply form him however. I have also gotten a bunch of friends and family to write the company letters. A co-worker of mine suggested finding out who gives out the award of excellence and maybe write to them as well. I think it is such a sad situation that a company cares more about money than offending a group of parents that have seen their children go through so much in the beginning of their lives. Even if they would just change the name of the baby to a newborn instead of a preemie. It is just very bad taste! Shame on them!

    Funny you should say that

    Nicole,

It is so funny that you should say that about the doll award. After a Google search turned up not much, I emailed another site involved in giving or getting the award and just got a response yesterday: the phone number is 1-800-331-0038. I haven't called yet. I think it is a good idea to email John Stossel, and I will send him one too. The more the merrier.

Mommy to a teenager! Wow, where did the time go?

    Hello.

I forgot that there are two boards talking about the same thing, and got mixed up.Here is what I posted on the other board.

I also wrote to them, but they never responded to my eamil at all.I see that you were asking about the ones who give awards to these dolls.Well,I was looking through the site, trying to see where else I can write, and came across this where Ashton-Drake has the line of "Truly Real" dolls up for sale.

Maybe we can find something out about these people.I hope it hel[s a bit,I am getting tired of the lame response that they keep sending us as well. That last response teeters in between stupidty, ignorance, and just plain cruel.

Like Melissa said, what does willingness mean to them.I have other friends whose preemie babies, nieces and so on fought so hard only to have their poor bodies just give out, their bodies just weren't strong enough, but that doesn't mean that they weren't fighting hard enough,I feel that they were and still are the bravest to endure all that has happened to them.

Unfortunately, the Ashton-Drake company just wants to justify this reclkless creation of a doll no matter how lame they sound. They just want that $130.00 a doll plus shipping and handling. But hopefully all these emails will make them think before they come up with something stupid again.Anyways,I hope that these magazines can help.Take care.

    Re: March of Dimes response

I also sent a letter to the company and they responded very quickly to my letter outlining the fact that this baby does not represent the preemies born today...that they understand but thought that preemies need love too??? What the heck does that mean? The doll certainly looks alot bigger and healthier than my daughter did at 33 weeks and 3 lbs! Thanks MOD for sending a letter too!!!

Mommy to a teenager! Wow, where did the time go?

    They Changed Her Title.

    Hey All,

I was checking out the Baby Grace Doll site(don't ask me why, just always curious)and I noticed that they chnaged her title.

It now states that baby Grace is the most life like Early Arrivals Doll ever. The where it used to say that a Preemie was a beautiful sight to behold,it now says that a Early Arrivals Baby is a beautiful sight to behod.

I wonder what happened?Do any of the moderators know anything. And because they changed her title does that mean that the Ashton-Drake Doll company is not going to honor thier promise to donate a portion of all dolls sold in the US to the MOD?It's very curious.

While I am happy that they revised the title somewhat,I'm still upset how they gave us all the typical sugar coated BS that they continued to send to everyone who wrote to them(except for me,they never responded to me)and then after stating that because of all the time, and money invested into this doll, they couldn't stop the wheels of progress from tunring. Now all of a sudden they changed her title. What gives?

I hope that something can be found out.

Hey! Grace is nolonger a "Preemie"

    A W E S O M E !!!!!!!!!!!!!

It's may be a small victory because, afterall, doesn't "Early Arrival" esentially mean premature? Heck... maybe she's a 38/39 weeker now. LOL! Whatever the rhetoric sales pitch...

We are victorious. Without our letters, without our voices, she would be sold and marketed to the world as a "preemie".

Wow. Life is good. Life is really really good. Go all-you-letter-writing-keyboard-typing-show-em-what-ya-got POPS! We did it!

    ashton drake preemie doll

I just visited the sight and saw the doll you are so right that it doesnot portray a real preemie. I too sent them an email to share my thoughts. I am not a mother of a preemie, but an Aunt of one ( 30 weeker 4lbs 10 oz 18 in. now a healthy(thank the good lord) 3 yr old little girl) I told them, and I quote " If you want to see a real preemie go to www.marchofdimes.com there are hundreds of pictures, maybe you could make a realistic preemie doll and donate a portion of the proceeds to the March of Dimes to help real preemies in their fight to beat the odds." I think I could have gotten some attention

    Quintuplets?!?!?!

I almost hate to even get this thread going again... but I just went to the website for this doll and realized, baby Grace is a quintuplet. So apparently the one doll wasn't enough, they are going to make her a quintuplet so they can sell 4 more potentially equally inaccurate representations of a "Early Arrival" Pitiful!

    Re: Quintuplets?!?!?!

You are kidding me? That is an outrage and they need to be stopped, how many people will be really hurt by this??? It isn't enough that she looks NOTHING like a preemie but to make her a quint? What the heck are they thinking...isn't there anything we can do??? I've heard of free trade but come on

Wow..that doll is almost funny if it wasn't so untrue. I would love to see a preemie that looked like that. My 28weeker looked like a rubber chicken instead of a plump pink baby like that. And they could not put the hospital bracelet on his delicate skin like the doll has.
It is a sorry portrayal of a preemie!!

    I AGREE

SO TRUE. . . if they want a "realistic" preemie doll, they need to add some monitor stickies, some IV tubes and bags and also an oxygen cannula or a CPAP and then MAYBE it will look like my REAL preemies did when they were born. All proceeds from teh sale of this doll should go to March of Dimes or yes like you said market it as a full term because very few preemies look like she does

    Grrrrr Ashton-Drake!

I feel like I have exhausted my soap box with this company. I will never buy a product from them, they capitalize on this sort of thing. I also notice they are selling an official PJP II cross. Wonder what the Catholic church and vatican think about that? PHHHbbbbbtt! This company is a crock... driven by capitalism with no thought to what harm they creating by ignorantly portraying these dolls (Early Arrival?!?! Hope that means she was born in the wee hours of the morning. Hmmph! Doubt it!).

For awhile they were promising to donate proceeds from Grace to the March of Dimes. Has anything actually become of that? I will write again, if necessary, but it seems to me they are careless and thoughtless.

I feel bad for the artist because she didn't create them as "Early Arrivals" and has no say but has received lots of backlash from Americans.

Whatever... I feel like I don't have enough in me to muster up another battle against this pathetic company. I'll let karma take care of them.

    So sad...

It's so sad that companies are using America's misfortune and tragedy to miseducate & make a buck.

My preemie looked nothing like that, either did my preemie twin neices who are just now a year old. They were smaller than my daughter's baby dolls, so sad!! Their diapers didn't fit her baby dolls...

I think we should take this with us (I'm talking to all of you, and our fearless ambassador, Michelle) when when we go to PAD in DC in November!! Companies that gain from our misfortunes!!! Shame on them!!

I am astounded that companies would do this (I guess that's the part of me that thinks people are just ignorant to this problem ) and not realizing they are doing us harm!!

What's MOD have to say about this? How do I get the companies address? I want to write a letter also, this is not right!!

Thanks for sharing this information with us!!
