SMELLY ELLIE'S 5TH SURGERY

Sep 04, 2007 04:04am (EST)

Yes, Smelly Ellie had to go under the knife yet again this morning. It was an unscheduled appointment, but with the injury that she had it was unavoidable that we take her in for surgery.

I'm not quite sure how she managed to decapitate herself, and after questioning Lily Grace...the result was still a mystery. (Mickey spent the night with his cousin so he had no part in it. Whew!) Lily Grace was in tears and just so distraught. She did not want Smelly Ellie to be away from her. She cried and had a meltdown when Smelly Ellie was taken away for surgery.

During the surgery, Lily Grace waited in the waiting room...whimpering, pacing and not so patient. She tried to keep her mind off and watched Barney to pass the time, but that was futile. I'm sure it felt like a lifetime! It only took roughly 30 minutes to prep and suture her up though. I must say that the surgeon was not too careful about aesthetics. It was a hack job at best. See if I ever go back to her again!

Smelly Ellie has recovered nicely, however, she is complaining that her neck is still a little stiff...or rather “loose”. Lily Grace, on the other hand, is ecstatic that everything went well and that she has her beloved Smelly Ellie back in her loving arms.

Please think good thoughts that we won't have to go under the knife anytime soon.

MEMORABLE MICKEY MOMENTS

Aug 22, 2007 02:31am (EST)

Billy and I are always amazed at Mickey's observations, and at all the funny things that come out of his mouth. I thought I'd share some of my favorites...

Mickey has full reign when he's at work with Billy...playing with rocks, bugs and mud...and who knows what else. He came across a frog the other day, picked it up and hollered for his daddy to come see. “Look, Daddy. A frog. Isn't he so cute?” Then the frog proceeds to pee all over Mick's hand. He dropped the froggie quickly and ran into the bathroom to wash his hands. “Ewww, Daddy. That's just discussing and gross!” LOL

Last Friday after swim club, I dropped the kids off at my mom's while I went in for my annual gyno checkup. Lily Grace naps there on a regular basis so she's but all to happy to go down after a fun morning of swimming. Mickey, on the other hand, would rather stay up and play with his cousins who are too old for napping. The night before, Billy and I discussed that he would need to take a nap at Ngoai's (grandma in Vietnamese) after swim club. Mickey assured us that he would. Well, he didn't nap a wink while I was at my appointment. So later that evening, Billy said to Mickey, “You know you have to go to bed early tonight. Remember, we talked about napping today? It was our deal and we even shook on it?” Mickey's replied, “I don't know about that Dad.” LOL

Once while waiting in the bank's drive thru line, Mickey was swinging his legs and kicking the back of the passenger seat. Since he and Billy just detailed my car, I asked him to stop so to not get my seat dirty. He replied, “With pleasure, Mom. No problem at all.” (Isn't he just a stinker?!) LOL

Watering the yard and letting the kids run around is oh so much fun for them. It's usually after 5pm before we'll head outside to play. And when we do, I always insist on lathering on the Bug-n-Sun even though there's plenty of shade in our backyard by that time of the day. The kids are usually great about letting me glob that stuff on, but this one time, Lily Grace ran around the living room making me chase after her. Mickey was getting a little impatient about heading out. I told him we can't go out until I get lotion on LG. He said, “Mom, I'll protect her if the mosquitoes come after her.” (Awww, now that's brotherly love!) LOL

“When I get fuss-a-rated, I say 'aye yi yi'.” LOL

After getting dressed for a friend's wedding, I walked out into the living room to Billy's “You look gorg-e-mus, Baby.” Mickey looked up and said, “Wow Mom, you look beaut-i-mus!” LOL

This one is still my all-time favorite Mickey moment...

He was 2 ½ yrs old, and visiting his baby sister for the first time in the NICU. I wrapped and bundled Lily Grace up in all the blankets prior to Mickey's entrance. Billy sat down on the rocker and held Mickey in his lap. I handed Lily Grace over to the boys carefully while praying that her beeps and sounds wouldn't frighten him. Oh, the look of love was all over Mickey's face as he looked down at his baby sister. He kissed her and looked at her, looked at us, looked back at her...then, he looked up at his Daddy and said, “Does Lily Grace got foots?” Mickey's visiting LG in the NICU (my first online video)

My oldest is getting so big, so handsome and so incredibly smart.

ME, THE TEACHER

Aug 15, 2007 08:39pm (EST)

Next week will find me back at school for my 14th year of teaching. I can't believe it's been that long already. I remember my first teaching position like it was just yesterday. It was Connally ISD in Waco, TX, 2nd grade Dyslexia. Boy, I loved my first year there! They went to a pull-out class for our Dyslexia program so I was moved to a regular 2nd grade class for another 2 years.

Then, I found myself down in Houston to be closer to my sister. That summer, I decided to work with a temp agency while I waited for the school systems to start interviewing, etc. Well, I found myself at Baylor College of Medicine for a job one day. It was in their Urology dept working with a free prostate screening. I'd set up appointments for men and help with the administrative stuff on the screening days. Within a few weeks of being there, Dr. S received a new NIH grant and offered me a job as his Prostate Cancer Study Coordinator. I hadn't heard from any Pearland schools at that time so I took it...besides, the pay was really great compared to my teacher pay. Funny though, the next day I got a job offer with one of the schools.

I really enjoyed working on the grant/study. I met so many interesting patients, docs and nurses. However, after 2 years, I was wrapping up the study, adding touches to the abstract and presenting key points to Dr. S, I felt this was a good time to get back into teaching. Don't get me wrong, those 70 year old men were hoots, but I missed my 7 year students. (And I had just picked up golfing so I wanted my summers to play. LOL)

That fall, I began my 2nd round of teaching with a 1st grade class with Pearland ISD. I stayed in 1st grade for another 3 years. Then, I was asked to go to 3rd grade to teach the inclusion and Gifted/Talented class. After 2 years there, I was once again asked to move to 4th grade. I agreed, but only if I could have my same students from the previous year. It was a deal and I loved every moment of having those students for a second year. It was bittersweet on their graduation day...some of them I had taught for 3 years and some for 2. I'd have to say that those students were my favorite. It's great fun to see them out in the community...now heading to high school...YIKES!

Anyways, I stayed in 4th for another year. Teaching the G/T students was loads of fun, but my heart was really in helping those at-risk and with special needs. I, then, interviewed for my current position, Content Mastery. It's an instructional support class where students receive instructions in the homeroom classes but then come to me for added support. I service general ed students as well as students with learning disabilities, 504, ADD, ADHD, OHI, AU, VI, SI, ED, etc. I service all the grade levels...K-4th. I also go into a 4th grade math class and co-teach with a first year teacher. This will be my 4th year in this position, and I love it! I wouldn't trade this job even if I won the lottery...okay, it depends on how much I win. LOL

Next week finds be back at school with the hustle and bustle of getting a classroom back together again, looking at class lists to find my students and confirm correct class placements, and creating schedules and visiting with new teachers to offer information on our students.

As their special teacher, I feel that I know their strengths and weaknesses. I feel as if I know some of them better than their actual homeroom teachers because I see the side that wants to learn yet can't because of different styles of teaching/learning. I see the side that struggles yet will attempt if given the chance to take that risk and know that it's okay to try even if you get it incorrect. I see the side that desperately wants someone to care and see them...the student...the person.

As we head into the new school year, help our little ones transition into their new school/new class/new grade by doing just some simple things, ie...

  • Bedtime routine...start a few days or a week before first day. Establishing it now so that it's not a new change the night before.

  • Morning routine...give yourselves plenty of time to head out the door. Rushing will just build anxiety and stress.

  • Visit the school building even if it's closed. Walk around the outside of the campus. Play on the playground so that she has something to look forward to...recess! Guess which window will be her classroom...see if you're correct on the first day by looking out from the inside...make it a game to help break those first day jitters.

  • Pack a lunch those first few days instead of buying from the cafeteria. The cafe may not offer “comfort” foods and thus causing the “no eating” issues or “lunch meltdown” issues. Send a picture note...a picture of mom and dad, draw a big heart with her name in it to remind her that she is loved, etc. Tell her that once lunch comes around (well most anyways) that she is half way through the day...almost time to see each other again.

  • Supplies...make sure that your child brings in her supplies on the first day if it hasn't already been delivered (pre-purchased). It's not a big deal to us, but for a child to not have her “own” supplies can be very stressful and can cause embarrassment thus causing isolation and withdraws.

  • First day drop off...Set a time to leave...show your child the class clock and tell her, “See that long minute hand? When it reaches the 3, it's time for you to learn and have fun with your new classmates and time for mom/dad to go to work or leave. But when the short hour hand gets to 3, I'll be here waiting for you. Deal?”...Then after visiting with the teacher...take a walking tour with your child, point out similar toys and objects that she may have at home or have enjoyed in the past, show her where the restroom is located in that class or if nearby (point it out on your way to the class) and go in there with her...show her that it's not different from the one at home...probably more child-friendly. I'm all for those cute, adorable first day of school outfits but keep in mind functionality...nothing too restrictive and difficult to manuever since your child will most likely wait to the very last minute to ask to go to the restroom. (Be sure to pack a change of clothes and leave it in her backpack...just in case...worst thing to have to go to the office and call mom to come bring new clothes.) Tour the reading area...skim through and look at some of the titles to help with familiarity. Point out her desk/seat. Introduce her to her neighboring classmates... “We have a cousin name Ben, too. Isn't that great to meet another Ben?”...gives them something in common. Help her settle in her desk and then give your special goodbye...once and say “See ya” as if to indicate...no biggie, be back later, etc. Please don't linger this causes confusion and more heartache for both of you.

I'm sure what I've written is nothing new to you, but I thought I'd get you thinking and armed with questions for our Back to School Chat next Tuesday, August 21st 1PM PST, 2PM CST, and 3PM EST. Sorry, I can't join you all, but I'll be thinking of you and hoping that your first day of school goes well.

    I REMEMBER WHEN...& BEDREST PANEL

    Aug 06, 2007 04:59am (EST)

Around this time 2 years ago and after a month of bedrest at home, I was admitted into the hospital for the duration of my pregnancy. I was 27 weeks at the time...not bad by preemie standards, but no fun none the less.

I remember how difficult it was those first few days. I remember crying and being so emotional whenever I talked to Billy and Mickey (who was only 2 yrs old at the time)...especially at night when I would call to wish Mickey goodnight. I would get my self all worked up that a nurse would come in and sit with me until the hiccup cries stopped. I knew that I couldn't do this to myself emotionally and physically every night so I made a point of calling during dinner time to just catch up with Mickey's day. Billy would then call me back after putting him to bed to fill me in further. This worked much better for all of us.

I remember decorating my room to make it homey. Billy brought in my favorite blanket and pillows. We hung a pink baby blanket that was embroidered with Lily Grace's name. Right under the TV, I hung a pink polo outfit that she was to wear home (of course it would be way too big even when she was able to leave the nicu). I tacked drawings that Mickey did in Mother's Day Out for me all over the walls. There were ultrasound images of LG all over to remind me of who my fight was for...and a good fight I had for my little girl.

But my favorite were the calendar chains that my nieces made me...one chain for each week from week 27 to week 36 (my goal). I had asked them to create the chain with a big top ring with the week # and then the dates leading up to that week in descending order. So that every morning when I could get up for my bathroom privileges I could walk right by them and tear a link off. It was the best feeling to physically tear another day off...that's one more day that Lily Grace was growing...that's one more day closer until we meet face to face.

But of course those were the physical, material stuff that kept me going. The emotional stuff were the constant visits and phone calls that friends and phamily made throughout my stay. Not a day went by without someone else besides Billy visiting. Not a day went by that my best friend, Dina, didn't call (she lived 300 miles away, pregnant herself and with 2 older kids or she would have been there for me). Not a day went by without Billy calling at least 10 times and swinging by on his way home from work. Not a day went by without hearing Lily Grace's heart beat and hearing her move all about. Those were the emotional stuff that kept me going...and going each day I did until week 34 when she decided to make her appearance.

Next week at the request of our local MOD, I will sit on a panel at a nurses' training conference at a local hospital and tell of my own hospital bedrest experience. I will field questions regarding how these nurses can help ease these patients' pain and heartache...how to ease their stress and anxiety...how to make their unwanted stay a little more comfortable and positive...how to get them through this difficult time. To be totally honest, I'm quite nervous about this task so I'm enlisting your help...

What would you change about your hospital bedrest stay? Comfort level, pain management, etc.
What would you change about your nursing staff? What did you like and not like about the staff? What got you through your bedrest stay? Please let me hear from you and your experience. You can comment here or email me if you'd like...pham_haynes@hotmail.com.

Around this time 2 years ago, my life completely changed...a little sacrifice for a whole lot of gain...and boy, did my heart gain.

MAY I HAVE A SHOT, PLEEEAAASSSSEEE?

    Jul 31, 2007 04:29pm (EST)

What kid loves to go to the pediatrician's office and then begs for a shot? Well, that would be my crazy Mickey!

He's been coughing some with a little congestion so I kept him home from school and took him in this morning. Dr. K (who Mickey just adores) prescribed some meds, told him to just rest up and that he'll be just fine. Mickey then said to her, “I think I need a shot. May I have a shot, please?” She giggled and said, “Not today, Mickey. But thanks for asking.”

He's always loved going to the doctor's. Dr. K's office is in our subdivsion so we drive by there almost daily. He knows her car and will comment on whether she's working or not. He asks to go see her all the time. Perhaps he has a crush on her? LOL Today, he even wanted to bring in his soccer trophy to show her. Cute.

I can remember when he had his 2 yr old shots...he didn't flinch, didn't make a sound, nothing when the nurse gave him 2 shots. I was amazed! He hasn't cried with any subsequent shots either. I guess that's why he loves to get them?! Go figure!

    On to Lily Grace...

She's been nonverbal in terms of articulating words, but she makes lots of sounds and gibberish. However, lately her words are just taking off. Her latest words are “shoes”, “move” and “mine”...which she loves to tell her Bubby. LOL Then this morning as we were getting ready to head out the door, she put two words together and said, “Mine shoes”. Of course it's not very clear but you definitely know that's what she's saying. It was darling to hear!

Oh, and personality...can you say “drama queen”? Oh my, paybacks are starting already??? LOL

    OUR MOD LUNCH AND VISIT

    Jul 27, 2007 04:04am (EST)

What a fun day Lily Grace and I had!

We started off our day with dropping Mickey off at school. We came home for some 'mommy and me' time. We ate breakfast in bed (yes, we crawled back in), showered together and then had a pedicure session. Lily Grace had her toes painted for the first time this morning. I was a little hesitant about her sitting still, but she did great. She sat in her little chair and let me paint away. She was just so cute about it. Now, we have matching painted toes!

Then we headed off to meet Susan for lunch. Susan is the Director of Development for our Houston MoD. She also heads the Reading Champions program that my school took part in this past fall where we raised over $12,000...we hope to surpass that amount this coming fall.

We had a splendid time visiting. Lily Grace was a mess but hung in there with us. Then, we headed to the MoD office where Susan showed us around. She was so sweet in introducing us and just singing our praise...she made me feel as if we do so much for the MoD yet I feel we don't do enough to help out.

We made our rounds...of course, LG was the ultimate explorer and managed to conviscate a few items from several emptied offices...a toy from the "big boss'" office too. LOL So to contain LG, we hung out in the conference room mostly. She couldn't get into too much trouble there. She loved climbing on all the chairs and tables. She was brave enough (not that mom should have let her) to walk on top of the L shaped tables. EEK! But she had a blast and not a single tumble. Whew!

I brought in my MoD/Share scrapbook to show Susan. She loved it! I was pretty proud of it myself. It turned out great...better than I expected. I think I'm getting addicted to this scrapbooking thing...EEK! I guess I'll have to offer more private tutoring to support my new habit. LOL

Susan and I talked in depth about Share and what we all do here. I was glad to give her more insights to Share and what it all encompasses...how we have such a vast resource of information, an extended family outreach program, a huge support system that is so special...I was so proud to tell her about all the wonderful and incredible friends I've met here.

What a great visit! Lily Grace did exceptionally well considering she only had a 15 minute nap on the way there and was missing her afternoon nap as well. She did tucker out as soon as we got in the car though and slept from 2:30 to 6:30!

Even though Mickey missed out on our outing, Susan sent home a MoD water bottle and balloons for him...he loved it!

All in all, a great day for us girls!

    THE HAYNES PHAMILY'S PFABULOUS PFURLOUGH

    Jul 19, 2007 04:53am (EST)

...like the alliteration? LOL Okay, I'll stick with numbers and word problems!

Anyhoo, we had a pfantastic time (okay, I'll stop already! LOL) Friday morning, Billy and I loaded up our stuff and kids, and made one last stop before heading out on the road. We decided the night before to take my middle niece, Anh-Mai (7 yrs old), with us since her older sister was at church camp...we didn't want her to be lonely, and besides, Sydney, my best friend's daughter could use the company as well. With Anh-Mai now on board and us as parents of 3...EEK!...off to San Antonio we went!

Thanks to Billy's roadrunner speed... we got there in record time.

We decided that Friday would just be a relax by the pool kind of day. The kids love the water so they were in hog heaven. Mickey swam back and forth and about wore his father out. Miss Lily Grace wanted to do the same...she wanted to swim by herself...EEK! She tried several times to wiggle out of our arms...so several times we just let her...only to pull her up above water thinking she would be scared...she'd coughed, but loved it and wanted to do it again and again...EEK!!! She also had no fear jumping off the side of the pool into our arms...giggling each time!!!

I think we must have swam for about 5 hours...on and off, of course...especially, once Dina and her family checked in. Dina and I have been close friends for about 11 years now. She and her family moved from Houston to the Ft. Worth area about 5 years ago so besides major holidays and birthdays, we don't get to see each other that often. So, we were thrilled to vaca together.

After a full day of swimming and with a belly full of grub and pool water (EEK), Billy took Lily Grace to bed while Dina, Keith and I took the rest of the kids out to the pits for S'Mores. Mickey doesn't eat chocolate (actually he hates it...thinks it's nasty LOL...and didn't care for the marshmallows either) but he loved every bit of roasting them and “playing” with the fire. At first, he questioned that I would even let him be so close to the fire pit let alone hold a stick and play with it...LOL

Then, we were up bright and early for our day at Sea World. First stop, feeding the dolphins. Mickey loved it! Lily Grace didn't care for them much. Anh-Mai and her sensitive nose hated the smell of the fish...but she drudge through and fed them a fish or two. Sydney (7) and Kyle (4) were mesmerized with them. They were so cute...kids and mammals!

Fast forward to Shamu...Miss Lily Grace had the best time of her life watching Shamu's show. She clapped and smiled the entire time. She patted her knees with her arms to get Shamu to splash her...it was the cutest thing to see. She sat in her daddy's lap...so much fun to watch from behind to see her look back and forth from her daddy to Shamu...as if to say “did you see that, Dad?” Just priceless! Mickey was thrilled to get splashed on. Kyle now wants to be a Shamu trainer when he grows up...too cute! The girls enjoyed it but couldn't wait to get on the new “Journey to Atlantis” ride.

Lily Grace's reaction to the Sea Lion show wasn't much different from Shamu's show. She had a blast! All Mickey wanted to do was feed them. He thought it was so funny that he had to drop the fish to them unlike the dolphins where they came right up to you. He giggled with each drop...he was adorable!

After about 8 hours of non-stop fun and no nap for Mickey and only about 30 minute nap for LG, we headed back to the resort...only to hear, “Can we go swimming, Dad?” Can you believe that Billy said yes? Can you believe that we actually went swimming after the full day that we had? Crazy, I know!

The kids were super-fantastic considering the jam packed day that we had.

We spent the rest of our time there just relaxing and playing by the pool. We did venture to the market square for some shopping and lunch. All in all, we had a fabulous time! The kids totally enjoyed themselves, and Dina and I got to catch up some.

I can't wait for our next vacation...in a few weeks...fishing and crabbing...it can't come soon enough for Mickey. He already has his lures ready! LOL

    I'm glad to be back,

    SHARE LEAD HER TO ME

    Jul 13, 2007 09:08am (EST)

Last week I got an email from Stephanie who said that she found me through Share. (How cool was that?) She's relatively new to the Houston area and has a son, Tyler, who is just a week younger than Lily Grace.

After several emails back and forth, we decided to schedule a playdate for the kids and for us to meet.

We met at a kids' play area (first thing in the morning when it's been sanitized ) Stephanie and I hit it off well. We had great conversation while chasing the kids around. Lily Grace and Tyler didn't really "clue" into the fact that they were there for a playdate...together. LOL But they had fun nonetheless. And when we finally sat down for lunch they finally clued in...but exhausion had Miss LG a little on the Miss Crabby Abby side.

We had a great time and promised to get together again.

Oh, and something that Stephanie said put a smile on my face..."The people on Share really seem to know each other." That is so true! I feel like I know so many of you even though I've only met a dozen or two of you last fall at ShareUnion. Y'all are the best, and I'm proud to call you all my friends and family.

Pardon any gramatical errors or typos...it's only 4 AM my time...2 more hours until our road trip begins...Sea World San Antonio, here we come!

    Jac
Rare pictures of Tyler and LG together (1st 2 oics are from Stephanie's camera) and LG hamming it up (my camera...see the difference in sharpness? I couldn't buy a new one out of haste so I'm borrowing my sister's for the trip). See y'all!

    DO YOU BELIEVE IN MIRACLES?

We finally saw that big, yellow thing in the sky yesterday after weeks of rain and more rain. We started our beautiful day with going to church. Our pastor has been doing a 6-weeks series on miracles. We know we've been given a miracle with our Lily Grace. We have been truly blessed.

Then, home for lunch and naps for the kids. Mimi called and invited us to swim and have dinner at her clubhouse. So off we went after they napped. We were halfway there when little Mickey said, “We are sooooo close to Papa's house, but he's not there anymore. Just Mimi and now she's all by herself since Annie (her dog of 15 yrs.) died. Annie is in heaven with Papa. She is soooooooo happy to see Papa again.” And he said that all in one breath and very nonchalantly. When did my son grow up so fast?

Anyhow, while the kids were swimming, Mimi gave us an update on her 20 yr old niece who has been battling throat cancer for the last 3 years. Rebecca is not doing well with this last round of radiation and chemo treatment. It's pretty bad when the doctor comes in and ask if there are any places that she would like to visit and see. Was that question intended to let us know that death is knocking on her door? Wow, what heartache for her and her family. She's so young!

Mimi asked for us to pray for a miracle. By this time, Billy has joined us and started to tell Mimi about our miracles series at church. He asked her if big Mickey ever told her of the miracle that happened to him while I was on hospital bedrest. He said he only told big Mickey...no one else...not even me. This was the first I heard of this incident. He began to tell his story...

“Little Mickey and I had just left the hospital after visiting Jac. We made a stop at the grocery store for a few needed items. We were about 5 minutes from the house when all of a sudden, I heard a pop and felt the car go bump, bump, bump. I knew we had a flat tire with one of the front tires. I felt it on it's rim. So we pulled into a gas station down the road.

I was so emotionally and physically spent with Jac being on bedrest, Lily Grace not growing like she should, bills that were piling up, keeping up with the house, making sure little Mickey was okay, etc. I was just so down about things and was so defeated...not that anyone knew. So when the flat came and when I pulled over at the gas station, I just leaned over the steering wheel, broke down and cried. We didn't need one more thing coming at us that we had to deal with...little or big...just didn't need it. Little Mickey asked, “Daddy, what's wrong?” I just told him that we had a flat and that I'll be right back.

I got out of the car to go inspect the tire. I looked at the driver's front tire...no flat. I went around to the passenger's front tire...no flat. I knew it had to be a front tire that was flat. But still, I went to the back and checked both tires...no flat. I was so sure it was a flat tire. I knew it was. I know what driving on a flat tire feels like. How could that be? All the tires looked inflated and felt just fine.

I knew then that God had given me a miracle. I couldn't explain it, but what else could it have been? It may seem like a small miracle to others, but for me, at that moment in my life, it was a big miracle...one that I so needed...one that we so needed.

Two months later, our second miracle...Lily Grace.”

I think Mimi and I both had tears in our eyes...wow!

Our Share babies are all miracles! I believe in miracles!
