I, too, called my Representative today. Of course, I won't lie, it was an easy call to make. He (Dennis Moore) is my ex sister in laws step dad. (Get that?) So it was an easy call to make. AND...I found that he's already a co-sponsor of this bill - given that his wife had preemies!
I e-mailed back and forth with his wife Stephene this morning - and she said to let her know if anyone is coming to DC to lobby - and she'd be available to us!
Keep up with the calls - I know that the Share members can really step up to the plate and make a huge difference!!! Who better than us???

Way to go, Shonda!
This is so amazing... as of this morning, Iowa had NO reps co-sponsoring the bill, and now because of Shonda's willingness to step outside the box and make these calls, we have a Co Sponsor!
Denise and Shonda, I feel inspired....
I'm nervous, I'm writing myself prompts of speaking points, but I too will be calling the other Ia State reps.
1 down, 4 to go in Iowa!

Shonda... THAT IS AWESOME!!
See guys.. see how easy that was!!!
I sent my letters today. It's a bit unclear, due to some zip code issues, who our exact Rep is, so I sent to both Reps.
I plan to make a follow up call in a week.
Let me just say this... Politics is NOT my thing.. I don't know much about it.. so I avoid it. NO MORE.. I'm learning the ropes, the lingo.. and taking that step... so we can push this bill through.
Soo.. if you feel a bit out of your comfort zone.. Just get out there and do it! YOU CAN DO THIS!!!
Let's hear it for HR2861... PREEMIES NEED OUR HELP!!

Letters vs. phone calls
Hey,everyone!! I just wanted to encourage you all to CALL your representatives! E-mails and letters are great, they really are, but we are in a time crunch here. I called my Representative's local office and, of course, was not allowed to talk to him (it is re-election time for him) but could set up an appointment for after the election. I passed on that and called his Washington office where I asked for his Chief of Staff or his Legislative Aide for Health Issues. The person answering the phone asked what it was in regards to, I said H.R. 2861, he put me through immediately to the Aide's voice mail. I left my "elevator speech" message (about a 20 min. message) and asked for a return phone call. The Aide returned my call about 2 hours later, after doing his research, and we talked. We talked for about 30 minutes, with me "appreciating" everything he had done, but bottom line was would Rep. Inglis agree to co-sponsor the bill? No he won't co-sponsor the bill. Will Rep. Inglis agree to pass the bill when it is brought to the House floor? Yes, he will agree to pass it provided no other amendments were attached. Was I frustrated? You betcha, but the Aide did encourage me to call again and he e-mailed me some information. You can bet that I will be following up with the Aide and he will be getting a "few" more calls from others in South Carolina!! Who knows what will happen! So, please CALL your representative today! Remember, they are people just like we are. They want to hear our concerns and our stories, it is just a matter of finding someone that will listen. If your Representative is busy, ask to talk to the Chief of Staff or the Legislative Aide for Health Issues...You CAN do it!!! I KNOW you can!!!! Can't wait to hear what your results are! Hugs!
Michele...maybe I will just run for office!!

I did it.
I sent an email. Even those of us not directly affected by prematurity can have an elevator speech.
I will attempt to make some phone calls tomorrow from my mom's house, and hopefully get through, but here is what I sent out.
I am writing about Bill HR 2861, the Preemie Bill.
In October 2004 I gave birth to a beautiful 38 weeker. After combating premature labor at 31 weeks, I delivered my precious Kamryn via emergency c-section. She had to endure 5 Major surgeries and 3 Months in the hospital due to a birth defect that nearly killed her and would have killed her had she been born at 31 weeks like she attempted.
Every 1 in 8 Babies are born premature. These are babies born to healthy, educated families. Babies born and given little to no chance at life.
Every 1 in 28 babies are born with Birth Defects. Birth Defects are the leading cause of infant death in the first year.
Everyday 80 Families must pick out caskets for their newborn children who died as a result of prematurity, the number one cause of newborn death.
I ask you to support the passing of the preemie bill in an effort to give all babies a healthy chance at life.
Sincerely,
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
As Michele said, time is running out!!!! Get on the phone and call your representative today!!!!

I'm dumb...
How can I tell if my representative is already a co-sponsor? I don't want to sound like an idiot, "Will you co-sponsor?" "Uh, I already am!"
I will have more time this week - I will make this call!!

My Tiny Twins
I went into labor at 34 weeks I was unable to see my babies for the first 3 days because I was so sick. I felt as if I was a sarogate mother because my babies were in the NICU for 19 days. I had to go home after a week and could not see them until I came home. I felt no connection. We need to raise enough money so that we can help our babies come home sooner. It is so hard leaving them in the hospital every night. My babies weighed in at 3lbs 6oz and 3lbs 15oz. I know that is bigger than most preemies however they were the size of my porceline doll. It's a shame that our childeren don't have the means they need to survive. Let's all reach out and help....PLEASE!

Mommy to my Angel Baby of 20 weeks & Nikkos my 33 weeker |
|
|
So, I took a deep breath and I called my Representative!
I took a moment today during my lunch break to do something I've never done. I called the capital switchboard at (202) 224-3121, which you'd be surprised to know they answer for the phone saying "The Capital, How may I direct your call?". I was transferred to Representative Bob Inglis's office - who happens to be my House representative and I asked to speak with him. He was not in, and their Cheif of Staff was working out of a district office so I was switched to the voicemail of the Legistlative Aide responsible for health issues.
I left a voicemail explaining that I am a constituent and that I was calling to ask Rep. Bob Inglis to cosponsor HR2861, the "PREEMIE" bill and that my famly has been personally affected by preterm birth. I briefly explained how Nikkos was born at 33 weeks and his stay at the Greenville Hospital System's NICU. I asked that he cosponser the PREEMIE bill and help to move it to the house before the end of this Congress.
I know I studdered a little bit and I'm sure I sounded quite nervous, but I don't care. I hope my voice, combined with all the wonderful supporters help make this bill get passed!
If I can break my shell, I know anyone can!

PREEMIE BILL Update! We need your help today!
House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Joe Barton (TX) still refuses to release the PREEMIE Act from his committee for consideration by the full House. The bill has been pending in his Committee for 2 years and was unanimously approved by the Senate in August. Call Chairman Barton today and insist that he put S. 707 on the House floor Wednesday, December 6.
There are only 2-3 days left before Congress adjourns for the year. We must not allow Chairman Barton to sideline the PREEMIE bill. Call Barton now and let him know that it is unacceptable for our elected officials to ignore the needs of America’s babies and their families. Call Chairman Barton today at 202-225-2927 and tell him we will not stop calling until he agrees to release S. 707 for vote by the full House! Do not let his office tell you that you are not a constituent of his district. You are calling him as Chairman and, in that role, he is accountable to every American! Below are points that you can make:
You have been personally affected by preterm birth (briefly explain your story and the impact on your family)
The PREEMIE Act has strong bipartisan support and 96 House cosponsors.
The PREEMIE Act must be passed this year and is desperately needed to stem the growing crisis of preterm birth.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 500,000 babies are born too soon each year. Since 1981, that number has increased by over 30%.
The National Academy of Sciences (Institute of Medicine) estimates the economic burden of preterm birth in the US was at least $26.2 billion in 2005, or $51,600 per infant born preterm. Approximately half of the cost of health care is borne by employers and families with the remainder billed to Medicaid, SCHIP and other public programs.
Background
The March of Dimes is working with Senators and Representatives from across the nation to enact the "PREEMIE" bill (S.707/H.R.2861), which would create a public-private agenda to accelerate the development of new strategies for preventing preterm birth and for treating babies who are born too soon. The principal bill sponsors are Senators Lamar Alexander (R-TN) and Chris Dodd (D-CT) and Representatives Fred Upton (R-MI) and Anna Eshoo (D-CA). The Senate approved the bill by unanimous consent on August 1, 2006. Currently, PREEMIE is awaiting action by the House of Representatives before it can be signed into law.
For more information, contact the March of Dimes Office of Government Affairs (202) 659-1800.

Call...
I did some research on Joe Barton (R)- it seems that he has 4 children, and 4 grandchildren... SO- use that however you might- he might have been lucky if they were all born healthy, but what he really needs to do- let the floor decide if this S. 707 is worthy- IT IS NOT ONLY HIS DECISION. I am going to call tomorrow. Hope you do too.
