Hello, My son was born 10 weeks early. He was in the NICU 9 weeks, home for 1 week and then rushed back in for surgery with another 10 day hospital stay. They all have their own path to follow. I hope yours is a healthy short one!! Good luck... Life in the NICU is a roller coaster that noboby wants to be on.. Tricia

My baby was in the NICU for 7 days. I felt like that was forever so I can only imagine what it's like for babies that must stay longer. But I am thankful for all the wonderful things the nurses helped do for our baby boy. He learned about tummy time, how to soothe himself with a pacifier, and was put on a wonderful sleep/feeding routine from the very first days of life. My son was in the NICU for 21 days. He was born at 34 weeks due to me having preeclampsia and being dialated to 5 cm. The only issue he had was jaundice and learning how to eat from the bottle. Today he's almost 3 months old, weighs in at almost 11 pounds.

Mom to Donovyn (32 weeker), Tristyn (34 weeker), and Naethyn (30 weeker born sleeping) |

Our first baby, a 32-weeker, was in two different NICUs. He spent two weeks in one where he had blood platelet transfusions and phototherapy. When he was no longer critical, he was moved to a NICU closer to our home. He was transferred the day of his baby shower and I got to ride along in the ambulance. He stayed for an additional week and we got to nest with him before being discharged.
Our second baby, a 34-weeker, SHOULD have been admitted to the NICU. He was orange for two months. The day he was born, the hospital was overwhelmed! There were 18 births in a 24-hour period! His bilirubin levels were in the concerning area, so we were told to have him checked for that at his first peds appt. which was 2 days later. Levels were off the charts there, so we finally got sent a bili blanket. Levels were still high 2 weeks later and we had to take him in like that every 2 weeks for the next two months. Not fun. I stopped giving him breast milk for awhile, as that can also attribute to jaundice, and that did the trick. Now almost 5 years later, one wonders if there is a link between jaundice babies and autism. Our son was diagnosed earlier this year and the studies are interesting . . .

I had my twins at 24.6 weeks on May 5th. They are still in the NICU but will be coming home next week. Babies in the NICU are sent home once they are able to do the suck, swallow, and breathe. They must be able to take a full bottle feeding without their heartrate and O2 saturation dropping. Their apneas must be at a minimum and their weight is 4lbs or above. They also must be able to tolerate sitting in a carseat.

He is so precious!!! My boys came along later than yours did, but my first was born with kidney failure and wasn't able to breathe at first. He was born at 35 weeks, but was over 8 pounds! We don't know really what he weighed because of all the fluid stuck inside his tissues and bladder. Once they drained his bladder, he was 8lbs 4oz, but still VERY puffy with fluid. He was in the NICU for about 3 weeks or so, then moved to the pediatric floor for another 3 or 4 weeks. It's so hard to remember (he's almost 21 now!!!). He had an NG tube until close to when he came home. Later he ended up needing it again and eventually a gtube, but the feeding thing wasn't an issue about not being able to go home. I know they look at a lot, like do they keep oxygen levels stable, even when eating, can they regulate temperature, etc. I have known some moms who's doctor didn't let the baby come home until they could eat totally by mouth though (not usually "kidney kids" otherwise most would never get to go home!)
My second son was born at 35 weeks and 6 days. He was 9 pounds 10 ounces!!!! He had trouble breathing at birth, so was taken to the NICU, but we were lucky that he only had to stay in there for about 5 or 6 hours.
I really hope your little one doesn't take too long getting all the goals the doctors have for him met!
