How long was your baby in NICU?

Lilbitoffaith - 12:33am Dec 27, 2007 EST
Faith Alysia 28wks (10/7/05), Ethan Bryce 30wks (12/9/07)

Let me start by saying I *know* that every baby is different....I just want an idea! My baby boy was born at 30 weeks on 12/9. He is doing fabulous and is currently able to nipple about 1/3-1/2 of his feeds...I'm just wondering how much longer its going to be before he comes home?! How long were your preemies in NICU? What was their gestation? My daughter was a 28 weeker and spent 39 days in the NICU....so I'm hoping he at least comes home by then, he's at 17 days right now...Thanks in advance for any input!

Suzie--Caleb's Mom - Oct 31, 2008 6:54 pm (#41 Total: 156)

Caleb was in the hospital for 129 days. He was 27 weeks and weighed 1lb 4oz and was 11.75 inches.

My son Caleb was very fortunate. He was born at 31 weeks, and weighed in at 5 lbs 1.2 oz. He only spent 11 days in the NICU.

I am very sorry for those who have children in the NICU for long periods of time. Anytime a child goes to the NICU it is stressful, and very scary. And even though not being able to bring him home immediately was so hard, I do feel that it was beneficial to him.

He is now a big 17 month old. He currently weighs around 35 lbs and is about 34 inches tall.

Mysti - Nov 22, 2008 10:59 pm (#43 Total: 156)

Simon was born at 24 weeks 1 day at 1 lb 7 oz and 12 inches long. He was released from the hospital on day 115. He was at full feeds for about 2 weeks before coming home at 6 pounds 3.4 ounces and 17.5" long.

Mommy to Austyn born @ 36 weeks (now 14), Paris neonatal loss 11 days born @ 25 weeks, Gavin born @ 36 weeks (now 4), Talan born at 25 weeks 7.23.08

Talan was a 25 wkr. 1 lb 12 oz and was in the NICU for 94 days.

The Neo told me that many micropreemies have an average stay in the 100's day period.

Talan is currently 8 lbs 10 oz!

Twin 27 weekers...

My girls were born at 27 weeks. They were real small because they were twins. They were in NICU for 58 days and 59 days. They came home a day apart. It was the hardest months of my life, or so I thought...Twins at home is not so easy either, but I wouldn't have it any other way. Good Luck

Ryan & Chase's Mommy - Dec 9, 2008 7:13 pm (#46 Total: 156)

27 week twins...

My boys were 27 weekers weighing 2 pounds 3 ounces and 1 pound 14 ounces. Ryan (baby A) came home 52 days after he was born and Chase (baby came home 89 days after he was born and on my due date. I always said that he knew he wasn't really due till then so he chose to wait around until it was truly time to be home! LOL! I also agree with Kricket- twins do keep you very busy but its great!

My baby has been home from the NICU for 12 days now! He was born at 33 weeks and 6 days, weighed 5 lbs 10 oz, and was in the NICU for 18 days. He came home on 1/16 liter of oxygen and got off of it on Monday. He is gaining weight like crazy (he's now over 8 lbs) and doing great! I had to be induced for pregnancy-induced hypertension and I really wished I had other moms to talk to about their NICU stay while we were there. Good luck! I hope your baby gets to come home soon!

My son is now 2 months old. He was 5 weeks preemie, even though he was born at 6lbs.7oz.s he was born with namonia and had preemie lungs. That to me is a very scary thing knowing/ seeing your baby off and on forgetting to breath out of no where. But thank god for the great doctors and nurses. They always tried to make me feel better. Cause with stuff like that its hard not to freak out. But I kept the faith

14 months in the NICU? Is that right? What is PICU? Just curious. Is your baby doin any better yet? I hope so. Hopefully you'll be able to take the baby home soon. I know as much as I wanted mine home even though I bought the baby monitor that lets you know whithin 20 seconds if your baby stops breathing, I was still very nervous wondering if he was going to be sent home before he was ready. One week and a day before my baby was born I was sent to the hospital for my blood pressure being to high and I had to see the sadest thing, it had me crying. A man comes running in the emergency room holding what had to be a new born boy , then i hear the words help me he stoped breathing. Man did my heart droped to the floor for that man and his boy. I wish there was something I could of done. Then when I went to register the mom ran in and asked if a man came in with a baby boy. And no one was answering her. So I said yes, cause if it were my baby I would like to know whats going on too. Then she asked did they say if he stoped breathing, and I started crying with her and knoded my head and she fell to the floor crying and at first they wouldn't let her back. Which to me is wrong but when they finally did about a min. later I heard a woman srceaming Nooooo!!!! and you could hear the crying. So that made me even more worried that he would get sent home early. I just kept thinkn about that day. And still do unfortunatelly thats something I won't never forget. I still check for breathing. Can't help it but it does get easier, I promise.

    80 Days in the NICU

Our daughter was born 3 months premature and only weighed 1 pound 6 ounces and had to spend 80 days in the NICU. She actually came home about 3 weeks earlier than the doctors had thought that she was, because when she started nippeling her food she just took off, and within a couple of days she was nippeling everything. She's been home for 2 months now and is doing amazing, she weighs 9 pounds 3 ounces and has been off oxygen for 2 weeks now.

Many of you already know our story, but did just want to jump on and add it into this thread. Katie was born at 32 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. We ended up in the NICU for 147 days. She was diagnosed with Congenital Cytomegalovirus a couple of days after birth. We sat around supporting her, 'waiting' for her little body to kick the virus on its own per doctors orders. After 2 1/2 months of seeing her viral load of CMV come back the same, her liver enzymes get worse, her red blood cell count and platelet counts continue to decrease, a bout of aspiration pneumonia, etc. We decided that enough was enough. My husband contacted the leading CMV Specialist out of Baylor University and she consulted with our physician over the phone and via email. The Specialist stated that typically, in Texas anyway, the treatment is to start a 6 week experimental drug called ganciclovir as soon as a positive CMV comes back (in Katie's case 2 days after birth). So.... central line was placed, 6 week treatment of ganciclovir was given, and miraculously her body, her labs, her enlarged spleen and liver.... got increasingly better. Following the treatment on the very last day, she promptly went into surgery and the central line was removed and she came home to us..... after 147 VERY long days.... I hope that this will help someone out there.

    Love, Kelly
