Laura was born 33 weeks and was able to drink from a nipple/breastfeed from go so that really helped her. She went home three weeks later. Good luck!

My son is now 2 months old. He was 5 weeks preemie, even though he was born at 6lbs.7oz.s he was born with namonia and had preemie lungs. That to me is a very scary thing knowing/ seeing your baby off and on forgetting to breath out of no where. But thank god for the great doctors and nurses. They always tried to make me feel better. Cause with stuff like that its hard not to freak out. But I kept the faith

14 months in the NICU? Is that right? What is PICU? Just curious. Is your baby doin any better yet? I hope so. Hopefully you'll be able to take the baby home soon. I know as much as I wanted mine home even though I bought the baby monitor that lets you know whithin 20 seconds if your baby stops breathing, I was still very nervous wondering if he was going to be sent home before he was ready. One week and a day before my baby was born I was sent to the hospital for my blood pressure being to high and I had to see the sadest thing, it had me crying. A man comes running in the emergency room holding what had to be a new born boy , then i hear the words help me he stoped breathing. Man did my heart droped to the floor for that man and his boy. I wish there was something I could of done. Then when I went to register the mom ran in and asked if a man came in with a baby boy. And no one was answering her. So I said yes, cause if it were my baby I would like to know whats going on too. Then she asked did they say if he stoped breathing, and I started crying with her and knoded my head and she fell to the floor crying and at first they wouldn't let her back. Which to me is wrong but when they finally did about a min. later I heard a woman srceaming Nooooo!!!! and you could hear the crying. So that made me even more worried that he would get sent home early. I just kept thinkn about that day. And still do unfortunatelly thats something I won't never forget. I still check for breathing. Can't help it but it does get easier, I promise.

80 Days in the NICU
Our daughter was born 3 months premature and only weighed 1 pound 6 ounces and had to spend 80 days in the NICU. She actually came home about 3 weeks earlier than the doctors had thought that she was, because when she started nippeling her food she just took off, and within a couple of days she was nippeling everything. She's been home for 2 months now and is doing amazing, she weighs 9 pounds 3 ounces and has been off oxygen for 2 weeks now.

Many of you already know our story, but did just want to jump on and add it into this thread. Katie was born at 32 weeks and weighed 3 lbs. We ended up in the NICU for 147 days. She was diagnosed with Congenital Cytomegalovirus a couple of days after birth. We sat around supporting her, 'waiting' for her little body to kick the virus on its own per doctors orders. After 2 1/2 months of seeing her viral load of CMV come back the same, her liver enzymes get worse, her red blood cell count and platelet counts continue to decrease, a bout of aspiration pneumonia, etc. We decided that enough was enough. My husband contacted the leading CMV Specialist out of Baylor University and she consulted with our physician over the phone and via email. The Specialist stated that typically, in Texas anyway, the treatment is to start a 6 week experimental drug called ganciclovir as soon as a positive CMV comes back (in Katie's case 2 days after birth). So.... central line was placed, 6 week treatment of ganciclovir was given, and miraculously her body, her labs, her enlarged spleen and liver.... got increasingly better. Following the treatment on the very last day, she promptly went into surgery and the central line was removed and she came home to us..... after 147 VERY long days.... I hope that this will help someone out there.
Love, Kelly

27 weeker
My little boy was born in October 2007 at 27 weeks (2 lb 10 oz). His only major challenge was premature lungs. He was sent home after 71 days with oxygen for feedings. He is now fully caught up developmentally, 90+ percentile in height, and will be turning 2 soon.

My Little Miracle Jaden
My son was born on 9/9/09 at 25w1d, 1 lb 10 ozs, kicking and screaming. He is now 5lb 4ozs. This has been a roller coaster ride as you all know, hopefully he will be home soon as he is nippling every other feed but he will probably be sent home on oxygen. Any advice on how to handle this as I am so scared. Thanks.

There are lots of moms here on Share that have dealt with babies coming home on O2. Unfortunately, I am not one of them (or maybe fortunately, depending how you look at it). I'm sure someone with some experience will chime in soon!
Good Luck!

Re: My son was born at 26 weeks.....
Well, I am happy to give you a hopeful story.... On December 24th we celebrated my daughter 6th birthday. She was born at 25 2/7 weeks and is now a happy healthy kindergartner. Her teacher says she is very smart and such a sweet kid. She spent 93 days in the NICU before she was able to come home and did spend some time in physical and occupational therapy. But most people nowadays are shocked to hear how early she was born... you would never guess if you saw her today.
So don't lose hope, your story is quite capable of having a happy ending. And on those low days, please know that we will be here to give you a shoulder to lean on.
Hugs,
Jackie
