Premature labor-anyone have same similarities w/ their pre-birth

Nelly - 11:42am Sep 15, 2009 EST

I am 20 yrs. old, my husband and I had been trying to have a baby for a year and half...then we became pregnant with clomid. Everything looked great, the baby was growing and we were both healthy. Never had any bleeding or cramps.Even got to find out we were expecting a baby BOY...we were really excited! Then at 5 1/2 months...I had started to feel like i had a stomach bug...just upset stomach, and had to go to the restroom, slight backache(have good tolerance to pain)...on a friday night, but then it went away after a couple of hours. I fell asleep, saturday nothing, sunday nothing, sunday night,...the same thing came back again...same symptoms...so I thought i would go in to the hospital, better be safe than sorry. When I got there they checked me and apparently I was 4 to 5 cm dialated. The pain started to become little by little more and more pain. They tried to stop the contractions with all the meds they had, they even gave me a steroid shot. After 4 hours I was already 10cm and in major pain, i gave birth to my 22week old son. He, the water bag still intact, and the placenta all came off together at once...I delivered everything...then the babys bag was broken once he was out.

I thought that I just had a stomach bug becuz my husband had that like 4 to 5 days before this happened. The only thing i had when I was pregnant was always a low backache, heavy normal discharge, heavy feeling of hips, the baby was always really low, sometimes felt like the baby would come out. The doctor said it could have been a placental abruption, incompetent cervix, or an infection that they couldnt detect. They checked for infection but nothing. My high blood pressure was normal, just a slight fever(nothing to worry), no bleeding. He said that he thought that it was more than likely a placental abruption...since the placenta came off, but i never had any symptoms of placental abruption, and when he checked the placental, it was normal...there were no traces that an abruption occured. As for an incompetent cervix, he told me there could be a little chance, but that he dosent think so cuz typically women with that dont contract or feel contractions and when they come to the hospital they are already 10cm. So what do you think it could possibly be....a PLACENTAL ABRUPTION(even though i had no symptoms,no bleeding and placental analysis came back normal)? An INCOMPETENT CERVIX? An INFECTION? Or just a FLUKE?

TERBUTERLINE PUMP: Did the Dr's give you an explanation of why it happen? I myself had premature labor. My Dr...

Re: TERBUTERLINE PUMP

well the doc told me that it could have been an incompetent cervix, placental aburption, or an infection. They checked me for infection and didnt see none, but the doc said maybe if there was one that we could not have known. With the incompetent cervix, he said it was a possibility, but that typically women who have this do not contract or feel their contractions...so part of him says maybe. With the placental abruption, which he is leaning more to becuz my placenta came off while i was giving birth....the baby inside the water bag, with the water bag not broken, and the placenta all came out. Once everything was out they popped the water bag to let my son out. So my bag never broke. I never had any symptoms though for placental abruption, never bleed, never any clots, anything....that is why the doctor is confused.....cuz with placental abruption you have all the symptoms and bleed, which is the main thing....and when he checked the placenta, he said it looked normal, no traces of it being an abruption....but he is thinking and calls it that cuz my placenta came off prematurly, where it should have come out after the baby came not with the baby...
IF the placenta would have not done that, i have a feeling that the doctor would have told me that i had an incompetent cervix, but be cuz that happened, he is confused and so am i....dont know what it could really be. What is a terbuterline pump? how is that used?

Re: Had the exact same problem...

SORRY FOR UR LOSS. when u got to the hospital were ur contractions really really bad???or just light?Did ur water break before the baby came? It sounds to me that it could have been an incompetent cervix....what is the doc going to do once you decide to have another one? Will he try to do the preventative cerclage or watch you more closely, or more?
Yeah i know what you mean, as a woman we expect to have some control over this and want answers, but we cant get them so it can be really tough. Sometimes I struggle with this, but then i think about it, and stress will not help out the situation if we are trying to get pregnant again. I dont think we will find out what exactly happened, but many things in life there are no answers to...those are just some of the mysteries of life...When it comes to the miracle of life....it is amazing how difficult and fragile a life actually is.....and it is sad that many people out there who dont have no problems with pregnancy take it for granted....cuz it is one of the most greatest gift anyone can get " THE GIFT OF A LITTLE LIFE."
Yeah, hope and faith is good....keep being positive, like i read in a book,we were made to hav children so the odds are in favor of us.... just think about it, every day we cross a day off in our calendars we are just one step closer to holding our more future babies in our arms....it might be soon or it might take some time, but as each day passes we are one day closer to having them. Our ANGEL CHILDREN in heaven will watch over their new little brothers and sisters....

Re: Premature labor-anyone have same similarities w/ their pre-birth

I am sorry for the losses you had endured.....it can be really hard and especially when we dont know the answers as to why it happened and what caused it.
I am going to have an OB/GYN and a Perinatologist once i get pregnant again....but for right now that im not pregnant would be just the OB/GYN. I guess im going to have to go into my second pregnancy without knowing a cause, but just to be monitored a lot more, since the doctor does not know exactly what happened. I have FAITH and HOPE in GOD that everything will go great. Ill keep everyone posted....thanks for writing and telling me your story....once again sorry for the losses

Wish I could help!: I delivered 28 weeks for different reasons, but it is frustrating to not understand what went...

    Re: Wish I could help!

If you dont mind me asking and telling me, what happened in your situation? Sometimes just telling someone and letting it out helps out. I know what u mean, sometimes I feel like what could I have done better, that would have helped my situation, but it is not good to blame or feel guilty cuz it is no ones fault, especially yours. You tried everything possible to make the best out of your pregnancy, plus there are known facts that preterm delievery is just a thing that happens and many times there is no reason or cause as to why it happened.
I know what you mean about having fear to try again, but fear is not a good thing. This is something i struggle with too, and i understand what u mean. Like i told another person, i read in a book "we are meant to have children so the odds are on our favor, and as each day passes, we are one step closer to holding our future children in our arms..."
It is hard cuz one one wants to lose their child especially after having experiencing one or more losses and just the thought of losing another can be devistating....My son meant the world to me and it gets hard sometimes cuz i had many hopes and dreams and things i wanted to do with my son, butI dont want to let my son down, to know that his mommy just quit cuz of fear... i just think that everything in its due time....theres no need to rush.....and likewise, i wish you the best too, whatever you decide will be the best for you, just telling you my thoughts....thanks for listening and writing, i really appreciate it, people here have been really great!

Welcome to Share! I'm so sorry for everything you've gone through, but glad you've found this site. I hope you find it comforting knowing that you're not alone, that many of us have gone through the same thing or been in a similar situation (myself included). I delivered my twins at 23 weeks at home, after suddenly going into labor.

    Wishing you all the best,
    Sarah

can you tell me your story if you dont mind? Did ur placenta come off ahead of time too?

    ciavarra1 - Sep 18, 2009 8:56 am (#12 Total: 16)

my birth happened like a normal birth would. my water ended up breaking and then he came and then my placenta. my story is identical to yours. i was having lower back pain from friday to sunday and then about sunday night my husband took me to the hospital and i told them what was wrong and they admitted me and checked me out. they took me into the room and checked me and told me i was 4cm dilated and i started freaking out. you dont EVER expect something like this to happen you know. so they told me because the hospital was a level 2 they couldnt do anything for us but i didnt give in. they gave me meds to see if they could try and stop the contractions but they got worse, so they gave me pain med and then a little before he came they gave me a steroid shot to speed him up. but before he came a level 3 neonatal dr came to the hospital from another and said they can try to do something for us and if they succeed theyll transport him to their hospital. so after i delievered they didnt have to revive him because he ended up breathing a little on his own so they took him to clean him up and get the equipment on him and then took him away to the other hospital.

After i was able to go home we drove down there to see him. and it was so hard to see him here so soon. he didnt deserve to go through any of this. and i was told by my dr that white males tend not to do so good with survival but white females, hispanic and black babies do better. But so far its been 2 1/2 months since hes been born and hes doing so well. he was born at 1 lb 7oz and hes now 4lbs 7.2oz and still needs breathing support but not like he used to. hes now on a nasal cannula, in a crib and almost ready to come home.

But i still dont know what my infection really was. i dont think ill ever know. And im soo sorry for your loss. Dont give up hope for your next baby. Were talking about having another once anthony is a little bit bigger, trust me im scared because i was told once something like this happens your more at risk for a high risk pregnancy but who knows. If you need someone to talk to whenever you need something feel free! God Bless

You have a beautiful story to tell. Congrats on the health of your baby. We experienced similar- prepped for the worst, but even in the scariest moments, those babies are wonderful. The negative aspects seem to dissipate. I am so happy for you and your family and my prayers and best wishes are with you as you go for your next child. I admire your courage and strength to do it. We are still battling the idea of trying again.

    Pre-term labor and birth

Not even doctors know what causes term labor, let alone premature labor. I'm 34 and have an older child who came into the world without complication at over 40 weeks. This time around, I began to have preterm labor at 28 weeks, just 3 days after the Perinatologist told me I was Polyhydramnios (had excess aminiotic fluid). She warned me that the condition causes preterm labor, and she was absolutely right. I stayed overnight at the hospital. I had not dialated, and they treated me by hydrating me with fluids. I received the steriod shots just in case. I was sent home on bedrest, where I remained for two weeks, having occassional contractions.
After 2 weeks, the contractions grew closer together and more painful, including lower backache. Then my mucus plug came loose. I headed back to the hospital, where I was told I had dialated 2-3 cm and the contractions were 2-3 minutes apart. They treated me with magnesium sulfate, which slowed down the contractions, for 2 days, but I was going to remain in the hospital on bedrest. Due to a known congenital heart defect with the baby, they wanted to keep me pregnant as long as possible, hopefully up to 34 weeks.
However, Mother Nature had other plans. After a week in the hospital, my water broke. With the excess amniotic fluid, I had swollen to the point that I looked as though I was having triplets. The doctor explained that one of the triggers of labor is believed to be the size of the uterus. It reaches a maximum stretching point. My contractions turned into active labor. The baby's heartrate dipped prior to each contraction, so I was sent to OR for a c-section, giving birth at 31 weeks.
My baby girl had begun to develop hydrops, a fatal condition similar to congestive heart failure. We were told that had I carried any longer, she likely would have died in utero.
Currently, she is at the children's hospital. She is 2 weeks old tomorrow, but her prognosis is grim. Her heart defect is extremely rare (less that 0.2% of all cardiac babies have it) and is complicated by respiratory issues. They cannot begin to correct the problems until she is about 10 pounds. Right now she weighs just 3 and 1/2 pounds.
Doctors do the best they can with the information they have, but the human body is a mystery, especially the female body. Hopefully someday they'll be able to figure it all out and no woman will have to watch her baby struggle in the NICU.

    Re: Pre-term labor and birth

I am sorry for what you are going thru right at this moment....i wish no parent should have to see their child struggling at such a young age to fight for life. And it is even harder when there is nothing that we as parents can do, even though we wish we could trade places to not see our child go thru that. The great thing is she is a little fighter and going strong, no matter what the odds. I can tell she is going for the home run . I will be praying for your little girl...

your right about preterm labor....many times doctors dont know what causes them, but everything happens for a reason. That would be great if someday they will be able to figure those mysteries of a female body!!!! Til now, we just have to make and do the best of what we got.... We got better things right now than 20 yrs back ago..

Thanks for writing.... really appreciate it! I Hope and have Faith that all will go well for you and everyone....
